Concert Review: Sergio Mendes Makes Pinoys Swoon

Posted on 02:12 by Unknown

Title: Sergio Mendes Makes Pinoys Swoon
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Ferdie Arquero

In the frenetic, fast-paced world that we live in, isn’t it nice to listen to music that invigorates the soul and relaxes the mind? That’s what bossa nova does to me. I grew up listening to Brazilian jazz legend Sergio Mendes for as long as I can remember, thanks in part to my dad who would pop in Sergio cassette tapes whenever we would go on multiple hour road trips.

As I grew older, I learned to appreciate the smooth, cool rhythms of jazz for myself, especially after a long day at work. There’s something about Sergio Mendes easy-listening style and contemporary soft pop melodies that can only be described as swoon worthy. One song can easily conjure up memories of romantic trysts like candle light dinners or walks by the beach.

Another great thing about Sergio Mendes is the fact that, unlike other veteran musicians who stubbornly stick to their sound, Sergio has learned to modernize his music. One big proof of this was his 2006 album Timeless. The said compilation featured Sergio’s collaboration with Black Eyed Peas’ will. I. am, an album which successfully introduced a new generation of fans to Mendes’ unique and captivating blend of Brazilian and jazz sounds.

That’s exactly what I saw at his concert last April 24 at the Araneta Coliseum- a lively coming together of old and new Sergio Mendes supporters. Dubbed as Sergio Mendes & Brasil 2012 Live In Manila, the crowd was definitely wowed as the Latin performer performed bossa nova hits like The Look Of Love, Never Gonna Let You Go, Rainbow’s End, The Trouble With Hello Is, and Night And Day, etc.
Sporting his suit and signature hat, Sergio kicked off the night by saying “Magandang gabi.” There wasn’t much interaction with the audience as Sergio and his band Brasil 2012 focused on delivering a superb performance. The crowd clearly didn’t mind as they laughed, clapped, and even danced in their seats to the timeless hits. As a newly-converted Bossa Nova fan I really enjoyed the infusion of rap lyrics and hiphop beats performed by one member of Brasil 2012 named H20. He gave the songs a new flavor and communicated with the much-younger members of the audience.

Another part of the concert that truly delighted me was when another member of the band performed capoiera in between numbers. I found the swift gestures and rapid beats very cool. It brought a cultural element to the show and made me really feel like I was transported to Brazil. Because of all of these elements I was treated to a show unlike any other. As Sergio Mendes told the great Ricky Lo in his Philippine Star Fanfare column, Bossa Nova will never die.  After his spectacular concert at   Araneta, I know exactly why.

SPOTTED: President Noynoy Aquino and Grace Lee, Korina Sanchez and Mar Roxas, Gretchen Barreto and Tony Boy Cojuangco, blogger Carlos Celdran, etc

Concert Review: Greyson Chance Gives Pinoys A Great Show

Posted on 02:03 by Unknown

Title: Greyson Chance Gives Pinoys A Great Show
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Chris Lucas

Do you have a Twitter account? Then you definitely know who Greyson Chance is.  The teen pop sensation is a trending topic on the highly-popular social networking site nearly every day. By the way, they arent the usual trending topics any regular twitter user will come across, some of the Greyson-Chance related topics I’ve seen are: Greyson Is Our Inspiration, Greyson Is Our Chance, Greyson Is Our Inspiration, etc.

It’s pretty easy to understand the pandemonium surrounding Greyson- the teen pop singer is the first artist signed to Ellen De Generes’ music label eleveneleven. The said label also produced his first album entitled Hold On Till The Night. To add to that, the American singer’s April 2010 performance of Lady Gaga’s Paprazzi earned him 45 million viewers on his Youtube account.  He’s being touted to be the next Justin Bieber (although this writer thinks they are both talented in very different ways).

Plus, there’s the way he looks.  Blue eyes, an effervescent smile and a genuinely nice personality all make him undoubtedly this generation’s newest teen idol. When this writer met Greyson last November when he visited the country for a promo tour she was surprised to discover how nice he was. He offered to get another writer a seat, remembered everyone’s names, and gave very intelligent answers.  When the teen sensation visited the country again for a concert held at the Arenta Coliseum last April 22, 2012, this writer is happy to say things havent changed.

Greyson was his usual bubbly, happy self as he kicked off his show by turning around and showing off his jacket with the Philippine flag emblazoned on the back, an action which made audience, composed mostly of teenage girls holding different colored glowsticks and placards scream with delight. One adorable girl in glasses turned to this writer and sheepishly said, “I’m sorry.” “It’s okay, enjoy, “was  my quick reply.

And enjoy the girls did as the screaming went on all  through the night. “This is the last show of my Asian tour tonight... I really can't tell you enough how glad I am that this tour ended in Manila," proclaimed Greyson before he performed 16 songs, making the show last for more than an hour. One of the most applauded numbers that night was , of course, his claim to fame, the singer’s own version of Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi.

Another number the crowd definitely enjoyed was Home Is In Your Eyes. Right before performing the song, Greyson told the audience the story behind the tune, sharing that he wrote it for a special girl. “This song always makes me feel so lonely,” Chance told the audience, a statement which made the girls cluck sympathetically (and I bet mentally wish they could be that girl.)

As the concert progressed, this writer finally understood what makes Greyson Chance rise and stand out among a sea of pop singers so prevalent in today’s music scene. It’s his charm and vocal maturity. A maturity Greyson displayed as he performed the downcast ballad Cheyenne and the sweet and soulful-sounding tune Unfriend You. Oh, and before we forget, Greyson’s way with girls, too, as before his final number, he borrowed his drummer’s stick and played the cymbals for a bit before standing with his arms outstretched on top of the drum, an action which made adorable girl number 2 beside me say, “Ang hirap nun, ang galing nya. “

Ah, to be young and in love all over again. Thanks Greyson for reminding us of how that felt with your cool vocals and sweet demeanor. We cant wait to see you visit and charm Manila all over again We will definitely be waiting!

Press Release: A FESTIVAL AT YOUR DOORSTEP

Posted on 09:13 by Unknown

A festival at your doorstep

Earlier this year, music heads and art aficionados were delighted by the Malasimbo Music & Arts Festival, which took place from March 2-4 at the stunning Mt. Malasimbo in Puerto Galera. Over 3,500 city dwellers made their way to Mindoro to enjoy a three-day festival – an attendance that more than doubled from its first year. As the second installment of the event, the festival was a huge success and garnered excellent feedback from the audience at large.

The organizers of the Malasimbo Festival, Volume Unit Entertainment, makes change once more with the first-ever Manila Music Festival. Aligned with the Department of Tourism’s Multi-Festival Tourism Strategy and with the endorsement of Secretary Jimenez and his office, the Manila Music Festival will take place this Labor Day, May 1.

The festival will feature headlining international acts Shinichi Osawa (Mondo Grosso; Japan) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad from A Tribe Called Quest (NYC), as well as “Amen Ra of the Universal Hip Hop Culture,” Afrika Bambaataa (Zulu Nation; NYC). Festival goers will also be treated to some of Manila’s finest performers who are no strangers to the big stage. Razorback, Kjwan, Wilabaliw, SinoSikat, Lady I and June Marieezy will serve up some Rock, Pinoy Soul, Reggae, Dancehall, and Hip hop.

The festival will take place at the Alphaland Bay City at Aseana Avenue, Parañaque, near the Mall of Asia. The festival site is a 250 meter x 150 meter portion of reclaimed costal land and offers audiences a grand view of the Manila Bay Sunset. This is a portion of the bay where the air is fresh and there is wide open breathing space - a priceless feature in a city as dense as ours.

Tickets are available at Ticketworld for Php1,500 (and at the event gate for Php2,000). Bundle ticket promos are available until April 25 via http://ManilaMusicFestival.com. Gates open at 1pm; it’s best to be early to bag your spot. This event is for adults 18 years and older. Valid identification will be requested at the gates.

Press Release: Secondhand Serenade Live in Manila on May 1, 2012

Posted on 05:35 by Unknown

SECONDHAND SERENADE
LIVE IN MANILA MAY 1, 2012

Dayly Entertainment brings you another moving event from the man who touched the hearts of million through his heart on sleeves musical approach.  Secondhand Serenade Live in Manila at SM Sky Dome.

John Vesely rose to fame with the release of the hit song “Fall For You” from the album “A Twist in My Story”. The single was certified platinum and has reached No. 21 at the Billboard Hot 100 in 2008.  The track came from his sophomore album “A Twist in My Story”, a documentation of his adventures in life, feelings of loss and love. It’s a compilation of his life story presented through well written and catchy songs. This type of songwriting enabled him to reach out to variety of audiences who can relate to what he has gone through. The pseudonym “Secondhand Serenade” was a reference to his songs becoming secondhand serenades for the listeners all over.

His first album Awake was an acoustic collection. He stated that while others experience fear performing on an acoustic setup, he embraces the rawness of it. It makes his songs more compelling and natural. His second album “A Twist in My Story” was produced with a full band.  Other songs in his repertoire include “Your Call”, “Like a Knife” and “Last Time”.  In 2010, he released a third album called “Hear Me Now” which features the single “Something More”. This album shows a closer to look to Vesely’s coming to terms with his past and other experiences. In a way, as with the man, the album matured and showed more depth in terms of music and songwriting.

“Something More” is a an example of a classic song from Secondhand Serenade that still showed the sensitive, heartfelt writing but introduced more play in terms of production. It features electronic pop complemented by Vesely signature rock touch and powerful vocals.

Catch Secondhand Serenade Live in Manila on May 1stat SM Sky Dome. For tickets, please call Ticketnet hotline at 911-5555 or visit their website www.ticketnet.com.ph. Ticket prices: VIP Php 2,120, Gold Php1,060 and Silver Php 530.

Taking Back Sunday Live in Manila concert review

Posted on 00:15 by Unknown

“Taking Back Sunday Live in Manila”
By Bianchi Mendoza

Taking Back Sunday burst onto the rock scene with the release of their first full-length album TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS in 2002. Hits like “Cute without the E” and “You’re So Last Summer” put them on the alternative rock/pop punk map, opening for Blink-182 and playing at the VANS WARPED TOUR.  They released their fifth eponymous album, “Taking Back Sunday” last year. They rocked Manila for the first time last April 13. The band’s original line-up has gone on tour for the first time in a long time, honouring us Filipinos by making us their only stop in Asia.

You could feel the energy buzzing around the jampacked SM Skydome even before TAKING BACK SUNDAY took the stage. The chosen opening acts: homegrown talents Typecast and independent act Imbue No Kudos got the crowd pumped and ready.  You could tell they were as excited as the audience for Taking Back Sunday’s set.

The crowd was made up mostly of post-adolescent fans who knew all of their songs by heart. The screams were deafening as Taking Back Sunday came on stage. Vocalist Adam Lazzara, who was sporting a broken leg wobbled onto the stage. But as expected, that didn’t stop him from giving an all-out performance, proving that you don’t need theatrics and choreography to give a great show. His voice, their energy as a band was enough to send the girls screaming and the guys moshing, and vice versa.
I remember hearing them for the first time when I was in College and I was instantly taken by their “in your face” sound and unapologetic lyrics reminiscent of early Dashboard Confessional with a mixture of Sunny Day Real Estate. They opened the show with “El Paso” off of their most recent album and followed it up with “You Know How I Do” from their debut album.  The ground shook and the SM skydome became a big ball of sound that seemed to be bouncing with every guitar riff, keeping time with every drumbeat.

Adam stopped mid-set to thank everyone for coming out, sincerely sharing how kind everyone’s been to them.  It was heart-warming to see a truly talented band, that’s so unaffected and unassuming. It was refreshing to experience raw talent from a group of humble guys who don’t try too hard to project the “rockstar” persona. They just play great music, whatever genre that falls into, some would argue they’re “emo” not “punk” etc. but it doesn’t really matter.

The line-up included fan favorites like “Faith”, “Bike Scene”, “Timberwolves, ”You Got Me”, “”What it Feels Like To Be a Ghost?” and many more. They ended with explosive tracks “There’s No I in Team” and “Make Damn Sure”.  All in all they played 19 songs, which just about makes up for the years Pinoy fans have been waiting to see them live. It was a concert that was “Cute without the E” with songs that CUT right through you.

It was a night like no other, it was Epic with a capital E. As the band enters a new era/decade in their history, reuniting with the guys who started Taking Back Sunday, fans can be damn sure they’ll be in for an awesome ride.

Concert Review: Manila gets Party Rocked LMFAO-style

Posted on 04:00 by Unknown
Title: Manila gets Party Rocked LMFAO-style
Written By Jhoanne Mariano
Edited by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Kris Rocha(Dayly Entertainment)

Ever wondered what the line Sorry For Party Rocking” really means? Redfoo, ½ of the  ultimate party duo LMFAO explains. “Sorry for party rocking is a person’s excuse for having fun. “It’s the excuse you give when someone complains,” he continues. “Let’s say your parents say ‘stop shuffling upstairs you’re waking me up!’ You can now just say ‘Sorry for party rocking, Mom…sorry for having fun.’”As if the duo responsible for the insanely infectious dance tunes,  Party Rock Anthem and Sexy And I Know It (just to name a few)  would ever need to apologize for forging a new generation of global party people with their brilliant music. You’ve got to admit, LMFAO has taken over not just the party scene but the whole music industry as well. Anyone with a pair of eyes can hear the Party Rock Anthem playing in dance clubs, on TV variety shows and even on cellphones.

Last Aprl 11, 2012 Redfoo (minus partner and nephew SkyBlu) brought their music and insane party antics to the Smart Araneta Coliseum for a concert dubbed LMFAO Live In Manila and the Party Rock crew  It’s fun when artists inspire their fans to look like them ( memories of fedoras and shades during the Bruno Mars concert come to mind ), and that was exactly what happened at the LMFAO show. The venue  was filled with party people of different races wearing and obviously  copying Redfoo’s tights, spandex and afro-wig wearing unique trademark ensemble. It was a party all right, as glow sticks were given away, cocktail drinks were being sold, with people in the audience screaming in anticipation, waiting impatiently for LMFAO to hit the stage.

As the Big Dome shined brightly with strobe lights from the stage and glow sticks from the crowd, a bevy of dancers  hit the spotlight, performing stunts while waiting for LMFAO.  Finally, after Redfoo appeared, he quickly apologized for his partner SkyBlu’s disappearance. The DJ-dancer said, with Shufflebot beside his side, that partner SkyBlu was missing because he was wasn’t feeling well. He  made a green joke to keep light of what happened which made everyone in the audience wish him well. Then the REAL party started!

Everybody was definitely in  as party mood as the crowd started jumping and dancing to the tune of LMFAO songs. Redfoo kicked off the concert by performing the tunes Rock To The Beat 2 followed by Party Rocking and Get Crazy. In the midst of the two songs the electro-pop performer threw two huge inflatable zebras and several beach balls into the crowd which surfed right throughout the hyped-up audience.

The next few songs were Hipster Girl, Take It To The Hole, Put that Ass to Work, Miami and the  Miami Bitch remix. During one of these songs, one of their dancers, a girl clothed in spandex, stole the show by gyrating and dancing all the over the stage which made the crowd grow wild.

Most everyone was surprised when Redfoo, after performing Getting Over You, and the Boom Boom Pow remix praised the Black Eyed Peas, particularly Pinoy Apl de AP,  who, he revealed, was a good friend of his. Redfoo also praised Apl’s billboard saying how it made him look “hot and shit,” which made the crowd break into laughter. Talk about a Pinoy pride moment right there!

It wouldn’t be an LMFAO concert without party antics and there were a lot that night, like Redfoo playing beer pong on stage brazenly holding a glass of alcohol in his hand, calling in one of their crew members named Mike who was given a birthday cake with breast-shaped icing, and singing happy birthday LMFAO style. In LMFAO world Happy Birthday meant another round of Shots-it was pretty redundant but nobody really cared at this point. They were in the wild world of LMFAO and having too much fun to care.

After a few minutes of total darkness, the stage lights went back on for the encore set. Redfoo and his crew went back on stage and started performing Party Rock Anthem, Champagne Showers and, Sexy and I Know it.

Everyone was more than happy about getting wet in the sweltering summer heat as, during Champagne Showers, Redfoo brazenly opened several bottles of champagne which got , the crowd near the stage prettydrenched. An LMFAO concert wouldn’t be a concert without their famous wiggle, and as expected Redfoo and the rest of the dancers pulled off their pants and started wiggling to their heart’s content.

Another great aspect of the concert (aside from the fun party antics, crazy dancers and infectious beats was the fact that it didn’t end with the normal length of the songs, Redfoo started DJ-ing on his iPhone after the encore  which made the crowd go wilddancing along to the beat. The party ended at past 10 in the evening with the crowd exhilarated, rehuvenated, and LMFAO-fied to the hilt!
