CONCERT REVIEW: Rock bands There for Tomorrow, Every Avenue and William Beckett Live smash up Manila

Posted on 01:29 by Unknown
Title: Rock bands There for Tomorrow, Every Avenue and William Beckett Live smash up Manila
Written by Jhoanne Mariano
Edited by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Magic Liwanag Photography

It was a very exciting and a memorable independence day for many fangirls and fanboys last 12th of June. Three bands/artists performed at the SM North EDSA Skydome – There for Tomorrow, Every Avenue and William Beckett. You’d most probably be expecting somewhat of a short performance from these guys mainly because they’d be sharing the same stage but all three performers did a full set of songs for each fan inside the venue. It was indeed one hell of a night!

The night started with “The Verge” of There for Tomorrow which made everybody rock along  to their tunes. It was then followed by “Pages,” “The Joyride,” and “Deathbed.” Everybody was still alive and kicking when they performed their 5th song, “Nowhere Blvd.” shadowed by “Backbone,” “Remember When,” “Hunt hunthunt” and their last performance “A Little Faster.” Having to perform 9 songs with such energy and enthusiasm for Manila was indeed quite memorable. All being well, they enjoyed performing in Manila as much as their fans enjoyed their act. The fanbase that they have here at present will surely grow bigger in the years to come.

A few minutes after the first band’s performance, Every Avenue played their first song, “Whatever Happened” followed by “Woodward,” “Story,” and “Where Were You.” The band’s been wanting to in Manila fo quite some time now and finally, that day hascome. Their 5th song was “No One but You,” then “Picture Perfect,” “Tie me Down,” and “Chasing the Night.” The fans were up front rocking along with their tunes, jumping up and down, enjoying every moment they had with the band. “There Tonight,” “Fall Apart,” and “Tell Me in a Wreck” were Every Avenue’s last three songs for the night. It seemed like the fans gave the band quite a warm welcome in Manila and showed appreciation for the band’s music with their loud howls and screams for Every Avenue.

The last act for that night was William Beckett, the former lead singer of The Academy Is, who seemed to be quite the highlight of the night. By the time that he showed up on stage, everyone was screaming his name and commenting on how hot he was. I personally think that he even made several new fansat that moment! He kicked off his performance with “Elephant (Damien Rice)” which showed how great of a solo artist he truly is. It was followed by “Attention,” “You and I against the World,” and “Compromising Me.” You could actually several fans crying tears of joy merely because of his presence. Crying or not, everyone was enjoying their night along with William Beckett. Everybody was rocking and singing along with every word of every song he performed.

“Drummer” was his 5th song followed by “Oh, Love!” and “You Never Give Up.” Every fan couldn’t stop screaming at some point that Beckett even had to ask the fans to settle down for his song to be heard. He was so down-to-earth that he didn’t just perform but he also talked to the fans during his act. Beckett is such a sweet guy – he reacts to almost every reaction he hears, he communicates with his fans, he looks deep in every fans eyes when he sings and he tries to do everything that would make his fans happy. His reactions are so cute you cant help but smile, or even cry, for some of his fans. His next song was “After the Last Midtown Show” followed by “Everything We Had” and “About a Girl.” He is not just a musician but he is also a bit of a joker! He was trying to fool his fans that that was his final song in several parts of the show.  But this time, he wasn’t joking around because his last song was “Great Night” and every fan did have a great night not just because of William Beckett but also because of There for Tomorrow and Every Avenue.

Press Release: William Beckett, Every Avenue and There For Tomorrow Live in Manila

Posted on 11:13 by Unknown

Let your voices be heard and sing along with the hottest summer pop rock bands of this decade. Together on Independence day, everyone would celebrate a different taste of freedom that only music can bring. William Beckett, Every Avenue and There for Tomorrow Live in Manila on June 12, 2012 at SM North EDSA Sky Dome.

There For Tomorrow
There For Tomorrow made their mark in the music industry following the release of their singles “No More Room to Breathe” and “A Little Faster”. This rock band from Orlando, Florida displayed impressive melodic hooks and strong vocal lines in their songs and exudes confidence in their performance. Hailed by most critics as “a promising band to watch out for’, There For Tomorrow showed even greater promise with the release of their album The Verge in 2011, where the incredibly catchy “Hunt Hunt Hunt” came from.

Every Avenue
This American rock band from Michigan, began making waves after touring with known pop rock bands Hit the Lights, Mayday Parade, All Time Low and The Maine. Their album Shh. Just Go With It reach #27 in the US Billboard Heatseekers Chart upon its release. Their single “One More Song” was featured in the TV show The Real World: Hollywood. The band’s upbeat, feel good, almost pop like songs made them very popular with teenagers and young adults. Their music has all the qualities one would expect from artists in their genre – catchy, melodic and relatable. Their latest album Bad Habits showed a much more aggressive guitar play and refined songwriting that’ll make their fans love them even more.

William Beckett
Formerly from the pop punk band The Academy Is…, William Beckett is out to show the world what he can do. With influences like John Mayer and Bright Eyes, he displayed his musical prowess through songwriting and creating memorable records through his old band. With his captivating voice, he never ran out of loyal supporters. With his new album Walk the Talk, he displayed the depth he has as a musician and as a singer and stated that the new album speaks of being true to one’s self, a mantra he lives up to and wishes to share with his fans all over the world.

Catch the explosive trio on June 12, 2012 and prepare for a rocking night at SM North EDSA Sky Dome. For tickets visit www.smtickets.com or call 470-2222. You may also visit any Ticketnet outlets or call 911-5555 for inquiries.

Concert-Goer of the Month(May 2012): "We Like to Party!"

Posted on 01:15 by Unknown
Title: We Like to Party!
Concert: The Maine Live in Manila 2012
Written and Photos by  Marionne Sobremisana

"March 31 is a day that will definitely be remembered."

It has been a year since The Maine went to Manila for a tour. Due to our research, I was not able to go to their first show during LIV3. And when I found out that they are going to Manila for their first full-length tour, I immediately asked for permission, even going as far as crying and practically begging just to get my mom to say yes. (Because my dad was nice enough to permit me immediately) and she did, thankfully, but on the condition that this concert will be fully funded by me. And I said yes, because I’m not risking The Maine. But then, Platinum was already sold out a week after the announcement of the tour and my parents did not allow me to avail PULP Royalty even though we can afford it because they were also thinking of the people accompanying me. Nevertheless, I did not lose hope. So I sucked up my so-called “depression” and went for Gold instead.

On the day of the concert, I had to skip my college review classes just to be able to go to the venue early and secure a nice spot in the line. My best friend and sister were practically my concert buddies during (and most probably, all) the concerts that I’ve been too, thus, we agreed to wear our signature “concert look” and mine was the purple checkered polo. This time, my sister’s friend came and another bunch of my friends who are new to the concert scene went with us as well. We were a crazy bunch and people on the line will probably remember us as the “bunch of girls screaming a lot even though they’re still just in line.”

When we arrived, The Maine was doing their soundcheck and was playing ‘Everything I Ask For.’ We went in line and I practically stayed there the whole time while my buddies were all off to buy food or merch or going to the restroom. To be honest, three hours in line was not so bad. I’d say it’s incomparable to the 8 hours we lined up during LIV5. But I met a lot of nice people and it was a really cool experience. There was even a really pretty girl with pink hair standing next to us. Also, we took a picture with the bouncer. I found it to be a little too funny. Then, my friend, sister and I even went as far as high-fiving Garrett on The Maine’s billboard outside Skydome. People probably thought we were out of our minds, but I think they also found it funny like we did because some started doing the same. Kudos to them.

At 7pm, they started letting the Platinum ticket holders in. I was getting slightly impatient with the excitement and after half an hour, Gold ticket holders were being ushered in. While on the line, I saw Sir Vernon Go, the PULP Live World president. I called out to him and when I caught his attention, I said, “Thank you for bringing The Maine!” and in return, he gave me a big smile, saluted me then gave me a thumbs up. He made my night.

Inside the venue, my friends and I split up because some of them cannot see the stage. They ended up in the side while my two friends, my sister, my sister’s friend and I were in the middle, with a perfect view because we (or maybe just me) were one person away from the barrier. Even though the concert hasn’t started yet, people were already pushing each other and I found it hard to move because I am pretty small. Again, I just sucked it up and tried to smile at the person pushing me.

Itchyworms opened the night with a five-song set. Almost a month ago, their bassist talked to me after I tweeted something about the opening act. And they redeemed themselves because I enjoyed their set. I wasn’t singing along because I don’t know their songs, but the way they made the crowd interact with each other was pretty cool. I forgot to mention that Pat was watching their set and everyone, including me, was screaming because of him. After that, they had a short technical break. Larry was testing the microphone and if I’m not mistaken, it was Matt who was tuning the guitar. This time, the human giant standing next to me was practically pushing me and nearly crushing me. I tried to push him back, but my efforts against a really tall man were futile. In the end, I stepped back a little and thankfully, I was able to breathe again.

When The Maine promptly started their set at 9 with Identify, the crowd went berserk. The crowd itself was a moshpit, with people pushing each other just to get a good view. I was victimized yet again by the human giant, and people were practically stepping on my feet. I almost lost my charm bracelet in the venue and my phone fell apart after my breast pocket accidentally dropped it. Not to mention the fact that it was really humid with the packed crowd and I was really dehydrated. I did not faint, thank goodness, but I had to run out and buy water just to keep myself going. Nevertheless, my mutilated feet, aching back and dehydration probably had to be one of the best parts of the concert.
Now, off to the best parts of the night.

One is definitely The Maine. You’d probably say common sense because it’s their concert, but it’s more than that. I’m not going to start writing a lot of fluffy and sweet things, but to simply put it, The Maine means a lot to me. And to be able to see them live was overwhelming. Hearing all their songs being played live in a volume that is practically a thousand decibels louder than my headphones definitely made half of my life.

Every one of them was really admirable and compassionate. Every time John ends a song, he never forgets to say thank you. Kennedy is such a gentleman, especially when he handed out water and guitar picks to the fans. Yes. He didn’t throw the picks. He handed it to the fans one by one. I was envious, to be honest, but then again, seeing his smile and my fellow kababayan’s overjoyed faces are enough to make up to the fact that Kennedy is not within my reach. Then there’s Jared, who is probably one of the best guitarists I’ve ever seen in my life. Garrett looked like a hobo and yes, I’m being mean, but after I saw him that night, I will definitely stop nagging him to shave. He moved around a lot, but he was the most fun. His voice was smooth when he talks and I love the fact that he doesn’t seem to care if he makes a fool out of himself by wearing the bra and bunny ears. I salute him even more. Let’s not forget the most adorable drummer ever, Pat. He didn’t talk much, but I swear that whenever he flips his hair while banging the drums, everything seems to go wilder. I might actually start playing the drums again after I dropped it because of this guy.

Moving on, because I don’t think I need to elaborate more on the bunny ears, bra and floating condom balloon.

I don’t think I will elaborate as well on their set, but all I can say is that “what you hear in the record is what you get live.” They’re really amazing. And when they played Into Your Arms, John kept saying “that’s beautiful.” The crowd was really awesome. I’ll just mention too that they played Ice Cave and I fell in love with it. I never expected that I’ll ever hear the song live and when they played it, it gave me good chills.

Fast forward.
The concert ended past 10:30pm. I’d say that the set was a little “bitin” for my liking, but it was amazing anyhow. I didn’t get a lot of decent pictures (thus, I borrowed one from my friend because she was further in the back, trying to take a shot of the whole stage) and most of our videos were shaky because we were jamming too much and when I walked out of the Skydome, the post-concert depression started sinking in. I will definitely miss the guys, especially because I wasn’t able to meet them. But that’s life, so I guess I’ll just have to go with it and maybe prepare better next time.

I know I say this a lot, but The Maine’s Pioneer tour is definitely one of the best concerts I’ve been to in my 15 years of existence. I met a lot of great people, had an amazing night with my friends, bonded more with my sister and saw The Maine live. The experience is incomparable and I would do anything to go back to this amazing night.

I’ll be ending this long concert rant/story. To anyone who is reading this: if you attended the concert, then thank you for being a part of one of the most amazing times of my life. If you didn’t, I’d still say thank you because of your constant support and love for The Maine and maybe we’ll see each other next time.

Press Release: Secondhand Serenade Live in Manila on May 1, 2012

Posted on 05:35 by Unknown

SECONDHAND SERENADE
LIVE IN MANILA MAY 1, 2012

Dayly Entertainment brings you another moving event from the man who touched the hearts of million through his heart on sleeves musical approach.  Secondhand Serenade Live in Manila at SM Sky Dome.

John Vesely rose to fame with the release of the hit song “Fall For You” from the album “A Twist in My Story”. The single was certified platinum and has reached No. 21 at the Billboard Hot 100 in 2008.  The track came from his sophomore album “A Twist in My Story”, a documentation of his adventures in life, feelings of loss and love. It’s a compilation of his life story presented through well written and catchy songs. This type of songwriting enabled him to reach out to variety of audiences who can relate to what he has gone through. The pseudonym “Secondhand Serenade” was a reference to his songs becoming secondhand serenades for the listeners all over.

His first album Awake was an acoustic collection. He stated that while others experience fear performing on an acoustic setup, he embraces the rawness of it. It makes his songs more compelling and natural. His second album “A Twist in My Story” was produced with a full band.  Other songs in his repertoire include “Your Call”, “Like a Knife” and “Last Time”.  In 2010, he released a third album called “Hear Me Now” which features the single “Something More”. This album shows a closer to look to Vesely’s coming to terms with his past and other experiences. In a way, as with the man, the album matured and showed more depth in terms of music and songwriting.

“Something More” is a an example of a classic song from Secondhand Serenade that still showed the sensitive, heartfelt writing but introduced more play in terms of production. It features electronic pop complemented by Vesely signature rock touch and powerful vocals.

“Taking Back Sunday Live in Manila”

Taking Back Sunday burst onto the rock scene with the release of their first full-length album TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS in 2002. Hits like “Cute without the E” and “You’re So Last Summer” put them on the alternative rock/pop punk map, opening for Blink-182 and playing at the VANS WARPED TOUR.  They released their fifth eponymous album, “Taking Back Sunday” last year. They rocked Manila for the first time last April 13. The band’s original line-up has gone on tour for the first time in a long time, honouring us Filipinos by making us their only stop in Asia.

You could feel the energy buzzing around the jampacked SM Skydome even before TAKING BACK SUNDAY took the stage. The chosen opening acts: homegrown talents Typecast and independent act Imbue No Kudos got the crowd pumped and ready.  You could tell they were as excited as the audience for Taking Back Sunday’s set.

The crowd was made up mostly of post-adolescent fans who knew all of their songs by heart. The screams were deafening as Taking Back Sunday came on stage. Vocalist Adam Lazzara, who was sporting a broken leg wobbled onto the stage. But as expected, that didn’t stop him from giving an all-out performance, proving that you don’t need theatrics and choreography to give a great show. His voice, their energy as a band was enough to send the girls screaming and the guys moshing, and vice versa.

I remember hearing them for the first time when I was in College and I was instantly taken by their “in your face” sound and unapologetic lyrics reminiscent of early Dashboard Confessional with a mixture of Sunny Day Real Estate. They opened the show with “El Paso” off of their most recent album and followed it up with “You Know How I Do” from their debut album.  The ground shook and the SM skydome became a big ball of sound that seemed to be bouncing with every guitar riff, keeping time with every drumbeat.

Adam stopped mid-set to thank everyone for coming out, sincerely sharing how kind everyone’s been to them.  It was heart-warming to see a truly talented band, that’s so unaffected and unassuming. It was refreshing to experience raw talent from a group of humble guys who don’t try too hard to project the “rockstar” persona. They just play great music, whatever genre that falls into, some would argue they’re “emo” not “punk” etc. but it doesn’t really matter.

The line-up included fan favorites like “Faith”, “Bike Scene”, “Timberwolves, ”You Got Me”, “”What it Feels Like To Be a Ghost?” and many more. They ended with explosive tracks “There’s No I in Team” and “Make Damn Sure”.  All in all they played 19 songs, which just about makes up for the years Pinoy fans have been waiting to see them live. It was a concert that was “Cute without the E” with songs that CUT right through you.

It was a night like no other, it was Epic with a capital E. As the band enters a new era/decade in their history, reuniting with the guys who started Taking Back Sunday, fans can be damn sure they’ll be in for an awesome ride.
