Concert Review: The Jonas Brothers heat up Manila!

Posted on 02:20 by Unknown

The Jonas Brothers heat up Manila!
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Ed Clinton Go

Fan girls and boys of all shapes and sizes reigned supreme at the Mall Of Asia last October 19, 2012 as Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas, collectively known as the pop rock band Jonas Brothers, performed to thousands of ardent supporters in their first-ever Philippine concert. Some bands have a hard time staging a comeback after taking on solo separate careers, but not the JoBros, as they are fondly called. Looking more mature and a whole lot sexier, the boys set the arena stage on fire with songs from their four studio albums It’s About Time, Jonas Brothers, A Little Bit Longer, and Lines, Vines And Trying Times.

To those unfamiliar with the boys here is a little biography to keep you all up to speed: formed in 2005, the Jonas Brothers gained popularity via the Disney show Miley Cyrus starring Hannah Montan,   followed by their own program also on the Disney network Jonas Brothers: Living The Dream.  They continued their acting career with the Disney Channel original movie Camp Rock and its’ sequel  Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.

One of their Camp Rock co-stars Filipino –American singer and actress Anna Maria Perez De Tagle served as the night’s front act. Wearing a black figure-hugging glittery top and pants designed by Filipino designer Oliver Tolentino, Anna Marie made her kababayan’s hearts swell with pride with her show-stopping performance of Rihanna’s Only Girl In The World and The One That Got Away. Anna Maria also showed OPM some love by performing a fun medley of local tunes Please Be Careful With My Heart, Torete, and Hinahanap-Hanap Kita. She impressed her fans even further by speaking to the audience in Tagalog before waving goodbye and leaving the stage.

No one can deny the popularity of Jonas Brothers in the country –people in JoBros shirts  carrying JoBro banners while milling around the Arena several hours before the concert are just a few examples of what these fans would do for their idols. And just like a pot that was slowly simmering throughout the day, the excitement that was filling their hearts finally boiled over as they began to chant “Jonas, Jonas, Jonas,” as soon as the front act was over while simultaneously running to the front of the stage.

The cheers and pleas from the crowd did not go to waste because after several minutes the boys finally appeared on stage, simultaneously kicking off the show with one of their biggest hits, When You Look Me In The Eyes. The crowd immediately began to sing along to the first song, waving their glow sticks in the air as some girls wiped tears off their eyes, filled with disbelief that after six years they were finally seeing their idols in the flesh.
The band’s opening salvo was followed by Much Better, Goodnight And Goodbye and That’s The Way We Roll as lead vocalist Joe Jonas, clad in a black top with white stripes bounced around onstage while Kevin, the eldest Jonas, wearing a brown jacket and white collared top, took care of the guitars. Nick, the youngest Jonas, clad in a black polo and black jacket showed the most range that night by doing vocals, playing the keyboards and drums.

The energy that emanated from the crowd during the first leg of the concert did not let up as the audience, composed mostly of hard-core Jonas fans, sang along to the 28 song repertoire. The setlist was also peppered with fun covers like Rihanna’s We Found Love which was mashed up with an original Fly With Me. Another well-received mash-up was Hello Beautiful and We Are Young. Nick, who started a solo career in 2009 with the formation of his own band, Nick Jonas & The Administration had his own time in the limelight as he sang the hit song Who I Am from his solo album bearing the same name.

Grateful and appreciative of the strong response that they were receiving, the boys took the time, in between numbers, to show their fans just how happy they were.  “I can’t believe it’s taken us this long to come here,” shared Nick Jonas. “It’s our first time here in Manila and you guys are showing us so much love.” “It really is more fun in the Philippines,” he added, a comment which drove the crowd wild.  Nick also mentioned that the band will be making Manila a priority as they go on tour once more next year.

From fans to songs to tears and cheers, the concert had all the ingredients of a perfect show –with just a little bit of controversy in the form of the song Wedding Bells.Believed by many to be written by Nick for his ex-girlfriend Miley Cyrus, Nick all but admitted that it was indeed written for her by uttering these words before introducing the song.  “This is a song I feel uncomfortable about,” But as an artist, you have to write about things that you felt while in the moment, if you recall our anniversary falls 11 nights into June,”  he revealed alluding to the day he and Miley became a couple.

The 28 strong set ended with the hit song SOS as the boys took their final bows. As cheers filled the arena, the band took to the stage once more to play the night’s encore, one of their biggest hits to date, Burning Up- two words which coincidentally would be the perfect way to describe the night-a fun culmination of the fans’ passion, and the band’s fiery talent, all meshed into one undeniably amazing show.

THE FRAY to perform live in Manila, November 10 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum

Posted on 02:35 by Unknown

With big sprawling anthems and light-rock ballads, American rock band The Fray is set to take the stage for their first Philippine concert on November 10, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Colisuem as presented by That’s Ntertainment.

Six years since their massive breakthrough success of their debut record "How to Save a Life" in 2005, the band continued pumping sky-groping choruses and symphonic rushes. Colorado’s beloved quartet spawned the Grammy-nominated singles “Over My Head” and “How to Save a Life” off that record to the repeated success with hits “You Found Me” and “Never Say Never.”

“Our live shows are a different animal altogether from our records. It’s a whole different energy when the four of us are on stage. It’s almost like the record happens. It’s great! We’ll play new songs and old songs as well. We’ll go jukebox,” Isaac Slade, also known as The Fray’s frontman, main songwriter, pianist told during a recent interview with The Philippine Star.

As The Fray move forward from their ballads that soundtracks rom-coms and teen soap operas, this Grammy-nominated foursome continues to receive praises for their third full-length album "Scars & Stories". Recorded at Nashville's legendary Blackbird studio with veteran producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine), the making of "Scars & Stories" fostered the most evolution the band has ever experienced, both lyrically and musically. The album debuted at #4 on the Billboard Hot 200 and has produced two hit singles already, “Heartbeat” and “Run For Your Life.”

On the band's website, Slade shared his thoughts on the latest installment: "On our first record, we didn't quite trust ourselves yet. We loosened up on the second album, but there was still some element of restraint. But on this one, we just stepped up to plate and swung as hard as we could."

With Slade’s co-founding member of The Fray, Joe King, collectively they achieved national success with their first single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)," which became a top ten hit in the U.S., and the release of their second single, "How to Save a Life," brought them worldwide fame. “How To Save a Life” was featured in the hit TV Series Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs, making it one of the most played and widely recognized song in that 2006-2007. The song’s inspired lyrics came from an encounter Slade had with a boy with drug problems and realizing that all the boy need was support from his friends and family.

“Never Say Never” also from their second album was featured in the movie Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, allowing them to increase their loyal fan following worldwide. The band has also been nominated at the 2007 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or a Group and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or a Group.

The Fray is Isaac Slade (pianist and vocalist), Joe King (guitarist and vocalist), Dave Welsh (guitarist) and Ben Wysocki (drummer). The Denver-based foursome formed in 2002 after high school friends Slade and King bumped into each other at a local guitar shop.

With a set that includes a mix of their new songs and then some of your favorite The Fray hits--from the requisite "How to Save a Life" to "You Found Me" to "Heartbeat"-- you would not want to miss the experience why many found their music beyond inspiration.

The Fray is set to perform live in Manila on November 10, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets are available at Ticketnet (www.ticketnet.com.ph)  or call 911 5555 for reservation.

JONAS BROTHERS To Rock Manila and Cebu, October 19-20, 2012

Posted on 00:11 by Unknown

Picking up where they left off in 2010, Jonas Brothers will be performing together for the first time in three years. Their first visit to the Philippines is set at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on October 19, and at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu on October 20 presented by That’s Ntertainment Productions.

After a three-year hiatus, brothers Nick, Joe and Kevin  reunite and perform for their Filipino fans  in an exciting concert sashaying a string of pop-rock hits as well as debut some of their new materials from their forthcoming album reported to be released by the end of 2012.

Hailed from Wyckoff, New Jersey, Jonas Brothers have taken over the hearts and bedroom walls of teenage girls everywhere since their 2007 debut. The trio came up with albums offering sets of catchy pop tunes-- including their 2007 single from the movie Meet the Robinsons titled "Kids of the Future" which was based from the song “Kids in America” of English pop singer Kim Wilde. Jonas Brothers also did a remake of the song “Year 3000” which was originally by pop-punk band Busted and was the trio's first single to chart and their first Top 40 hit.

‘JoBros,’ as their million fans fondly call them, also released their original pop radio hits like “Hold On”, as the band's first single from their self-titled second album in 2007. The iTunes Store named this single as #3 on their "Best of the Store" Playlist in 2007. Another hit song "SOS" rose to #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the band's first single to reach the Top 20.

The song "When You Look Me in the Eyes" also consolidated their success and becoming the group’s power ballad. While “Burning Up” cemented the brothers as one of the hottest commodities in the pop music when this single became a hit via digital downloads and the group's first top five single in the US and highest charting song to date.

Disney Channel’s Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream (2008) also featured these brothers as the reality series follows them on their first nationwide tour, giving fans a glimpse of how the guys prepare for concerts-- as their life of rockstars. They also headed the big screen in 2008’s Disney Channel Original Movie titled Camp Rock which they starred with Disney’s pop star Demi Lovato and followed up a sequel in 2010’s Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. Two excellent songs from the Disney Channel movie were “Camp Rock,” “Gotta Find You” and “This Is Me.” They also released their concert film Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experiencein 2009.

Despite the brothers’ respite from the stage for three years, brothers Nick, Joe and Kevin have enjoyed successful careers individually since leaving their days being the most culturally important American rock bands of the last decade.  Recently, Joe launched his solo career and is now a judge on the new CW music competition The Next, alongside Nelly, Gloria Estefan and John Rich. Joe was also one of the bachelors looking for love on Fox celebrity dating show The Choice.  Kevin and his wife Danielle are starring in the aptly-titled E!reality series Married to Jonas. Nick, the youngest among the three, stepped into the shoes of J. Pierrepont Finch in Broadway’s How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying.

The band has released four bouncy, breezy pop-rock album albums have sold over eight million copies worldwide in the albums  It's About Time, Jonas Brothers, A Little Bit Longer, and Lines, Vines and Trying Times. In 2008, the group was nominated for the Best New Artistaward at the 51st Grammy Awards, won the award for Breakthrough Artist at the American Music Awards and.

Catch an incredible experience as Jonas Brothers share their excitement to get back on stage once again at the SM Mall of Asia Arena on October 19, and at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu on October 20 presented by That’s Ntertainment Productions.  For Manila ticket reservation, you may call SM Tickets at 470 2222 or reserve online at https://smtickets.com/. SNOW PATROL Live! In Manila: Fallen Empires Tour

Posted on 20:20 by Unknown

Be ready as alternative rock band from Ireland, SNOW PATROL,gives Manila a performance fueled with artistic passion and musical ingenuity this August 9th at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Snow Patrol’s songs echo a contradicting sense of sweetness and edginess. They have a loyal fan base that keeps to their music as anthems of life, love and hope. They appeal not entirely to the mainstream market but to a select few who understands and relates well to the songs penned by lead vocalist Gary Lightbody. Their musical style varies from the almost melancholic “Chasing Cars” to the incredibly catchy and upbeat “Take Back the City”, but still maintains that trademark sound made even more memorable by Gary’s brooding baritone.

Snow Patrol’s major breakthrough came with the release of their album “Eyes Open” (2006)under MCA Music, from which the hit single “Chasing Cars” came from. The worldwide recognition of the band’s remarkable talent and gift for earnest lyrics established their foothold in the music industry. The mainstream success of the song “Chasing Cars” was highlighted further after it was featured in the popular TV Series Grey’s Anatomy. At the same time, the song received multiple Grammy Award nominations for Best Single in 2006 and Best Rock Song in 2007 as well as a Brit Award for Best Single all on the same year. “Eyes Open”eventually became UK’s Best Selling Album in 2006.

In their latest album,“Fallen Empires”, Snow Patrol seeks to experiment with their sounds and musical approach, taking creativity to the next level. It may seem like a departure from their usual sound but this collection is still identifiably Snow Patrol.

Snow Patrol is composed of Gary Lightbody on lead vocals & rhythm guitar, Jonny Quinn on drums & percussion, Pablo Wilson on bass guitar/backing vocals, Nathan Connolly on lead guitar/backing vocals and Tom Simpson on keyboards.

Snow Patrol’salbums are out now in CDs exclusively under MCA Music available at Astroplus and Odyssey Music and Video or online via iTunes and www.MyMusicStore.com.ph

Witness the band’s first ever performance in Manila on August 9, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Lifehouse Lights Up Manila Once More

Title: Lifehouse Lights Up Manila Once More

Love songs are subjective- some people may label a tune as cheesy, while some people may find that same song very romantic. Kudos should definitely be given then to musicians who are able to craft ballads that form a perfect balance- they tug at the listener’s heartstrings without dipping off into the cheesy hemisphere. Rock band Lifehouse is at the top of the list in that regard.

With heartfelt and catchy songs like Hanging By A Moment, Everything, You And Me and Everything It Takes, the rock group from Colorado made up of Jason Wade, Rick Woolstenhulme, jr, Bryce Soderberg and Ben Carey has undoubtedly amassed a solid fan base of Pinoy music buffs who have loyally been with the band since its’ inception more than 12 years ago. That very same group of fans was at the Smart Araneta Coliseum last May 26, 2012, as the rock band visited the country for the second time, treating thousands of its’ fans to a night of pure extraordinary music pleasure.
The night began with the opening act, local rock group “Never the Strangers,” which was warmly welcomed by the crowd as they sang some of their songs including their recent hit (from that very popular toothpaste commercial) entitled “Moving Closer.”

It was around nine o’clock in the evening when the lights began to dim and glow sticks of different colors filled the coliseum. Lifehouse fans, filling the venue to the rafters, slowly started to scream, excitedly cheering and begging for the band to come out.  It didn’t take long for all of the band members to finally give in to their fans’ requests.

The band took no time dilly-dallying as they kicked off the first half of the concert with a medley of  exquisite tunes including “Hello There” “All In,” “Here Tomorrow Gone Today,” “Spin” and Nerve Damage.” Wade playfully took the crowd for a tailspin as the lead vocalist, with an acoustic guitar in hand, surprisingly played an acoustic rendition of You And Me. Undoubtedly one of their greatest hits, the number made the fans stand and sing along, waving their glow sticks to the beat of the music. Just like their music that moment was sweet, heartfelt, and moving all at the same time.

Just when the crowd thought they’ve seen enough of the night’s surprises, during one of the first few songs Jason Wade got down from the stage and took a closer look at the crowd. The amiable vocalist, with a smile on his face, shook some hands and walked around the coliseum, making the fans on the right side of the stage leave their seats to have a closer look at him. The vocalist, undoubtedly amused by the audience’s reaction, moved to the upper areas of the coliseum, smiling and shaking hands with the concertgoers.
Preferring to continue the connection he already made with the fans, Wade asked the crowd what songs they wanted to hear. He dutifully played their requests which were “Everything,” “Blind” and “Breathing.” That was then followed by “Whatever It Takes,” “Wrecking Ball” Sick Cycle Carousel” “From Where You Are” and “End Has Only Begun.”

After performing Wash and Take Me Away the band took a few minutes to reminisce their first hit single,  “Hanging by a Moment- which, of course they played right after their impromptu walk through memory lane. Possibly pumped up by the audience’s reaction the band quite literally left the crowd “hanging by a moment” as, in the middle of their performance the band paused for a little while, leaving the crowd hanging onto the edge of their seats and making the fans scream their lungs out before they finally played the last keys of the song. This was followed by more songs namely “Falling In” “First Time.” And the last number of the night, “Broken.”

However, all these seemed to not be enough for the stoked crowd as everyone cheered for the band to perform more songs. The coliseum was filled with “We want more!” chants and cries. After a few minutes of pleading screams from the fans, the band was back on stage performing their encore set, “Halfway Gone” and for the second time that night they performed “Everything.” The show ended around 10 in the evening with everyone milling out of the Big Dome with huge smiles plastered on their faces. It was a sweet, sentimental, and all-out amazing night to say the least. It must also be mentioned that what made the concert undoubtedly awesome was the fact that the group made it all about the fans by playing the songs their supporters wanted to hear. Talk about showmanship at its’ finest! We hope the band comes back and dazzles us with their music once again very soon!
