OneRepublic performs in Manila this November 2013

Posted on 23:09 by Unknown
OneRepublic first achieved success as the number one unsigned act on MySpace Music. Their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud, released in 2007 includes the singles “Stop and Stare,” “Say (All I Need)” and the smash hit “Apologize” which ranks in the Top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100’s All-Time Top Songs list. A remix version of “Apologize” was also featured on Timbaland’s album released the same year. In 2008, they toured with Maroon 5 and even appeared on the American Idol finale, alongside David Archuleta.
The band’s second album, Waking Up, was released in 2009 and had four official singles, “All the Right Moves,” “Secrets,” “Marchin’ On,” and “Good Life.” The singles and other songs from the album have been widely featured and even used as promotional material for US TV shows and movies. “Secrets,” was used in the movie The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and TV shows Lostand Pretty Little Liars; “Good Life” was featured in the trailers for the movies One Day and Eat Pray Love.

OneRepublic’s latest album, Native, was released in March 2013 and became the band’s highest charting album to date. In creating their third full-length album, the band traveled to Paris, Greece, London, New York, Seattle, and Vancouver to write, record, and immerse themselves in elevating and expanding their already-sweeping sound. Also working at lead singer/songwriter/ keyboardist and GRAMMY® winner Ryan Tedder’s own Patriot Studios in Denver, OneRepublic redefined their approach to rhythm and infused their high-powered rock-pop hybrid with elements of electronic music, gospel, blues, and folk.

“There’s this crazy juxtaposition happening on the album,” says Tedder, whose bandmates include Zach Filkins (guitar), Drew Brown (guitar), Brent Kutzle (bass, cello), and Eddie Fisher (drums). “On one hand we tiptoed into the EDM world and brought in that energy, drive, and tempo, but on the other it’s got a lot of acoustic guitar and a much more organic feel than what we’ve done before.” For help in achieving that supercharged but soulful sound, OneRepublic collaborated with leading-edge producers like Philippe Zdar (the French composer known for his work with artists like Phoenix, The Beastie Boys, Cat Power, and Depeche Mode), Jeff Bhasker (Kanye west, Jay Z, the Rolling Stones,  Fun.) and Benny Blanco (Maroon 5, Rihanna, Gym Class Heroes).  Nativealso features some guest artists, such as Adele backup singer Bobbie Gordon, as well as Grecian harpist HarpEri, (recruited while OneRepublic was recording at the famed Black Rock Studios in Santorini).

Though the album’s built on deftly crafted beats and intricately textured arrangements, a spirit of simplicity stands at the heart of Native. “Our goal is always to put out the most honest record possible. So even though we’re very much inspired by EDM, I also love what’s happening with folk music today. It’s cool to see that the world doesn’t always need 300 beats per minute, that just an acoustic guitar and a voice can connect with people,” says Tedder, who also points out that “the swampy, stompy feel of Southern Delta blues” played a major role in helping OneRepublic to instill Native with a certain raw energy. OneRepublic also looked to the folk and blues movements in teasing out the emotional content of Native. “These new songs are about mortality, love, hope, desperation, faith, failure—the whole gamut of human emotion,” Tedder says. “We try to give the lyrics a certain gravity without being preachy, and make the kind of music that music that connects with people not just at a party or a club on Saturday night.”

The 6 best things about the JLO Concert

Posted on 00:20 by Unknown
The 6 best things about the JLO Concert
Written by Jamie Ortega

People may call her by many names- Jennifer Lopez, Jenny From The Block, JLO-but no matter what they may use when it comes to her talent, her beauty and her inimitable style her fans and supporters all say the same thing- Jennifer Lopez is an ICON and an INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR.
On that note, the Philippines was very lucky to see the Latina sensation perform live at her two-hour jampacked concert last November 26, 2012 held at the Mall Of Asia Arena. The former American Idol judge wove her musical magic from start to finish: from the amazing set list (full of JLO’s popular hits) to the shiny, glittery and oh-so-sexy onstage outfits, to the show –stopping, hard-hitting, body-bumping dance moves, to the awe-inspiring set design it was an absolutely phenomenal show. To separately sum up how we felt here’s a rundown of what made JLO Live In Manila so great:

1) The repertoire- Have you been to a concert where you sometimes feel like youre waiting for the artist’s two hits as they sing unknown songs from their nth album? Well, this show didn’t have that as JLO sang all her hits starting with Get Right from her fourth studio album Rebirth to Love Don’t Cost A Thing from her second studio album, JLO. Fans of the old-school JLO swag weren’t disappointed either as she sang I’m Real, Aint It Funny and Jenny From The Block.  Fans of JLO’s more recent indak-inducing tunes like On The Floor got a dose of that towards the end of the show capped by a sizzling dance duet finale between JLO and dancer-choreographer beau Casper Smart. The acoustic set in the middle of the concert where JLO was given a chance to showcase her softer side with tunes like Until It Beats No More and the nostalgia-inducing If You Had My Love were well-spaced as well.

2) The outfits! Apart from being one of the world’s top performers, JLO is also an established fashion icon, and the outfits that the triple threat wore, all designed by Lebansese designer Zuhair Murad were simply BREATHTAKING!!!!!!!!!!! It began with the dazzling gold strapless cut in several parts with matching strappy sandals followed by a silver top-and-sweatpants, a sexily-cut red gown, a flow Grecian-inspired blue dress: all the shine, glitter and sheer everywhere spelled glamour

3) The Love she has for the Philippines -Tired of the usual “Mahal Kita Manila?” sentiments from foreign performers? We feel ‘ya. JLO veered away from that by grabbing a Philippine flag from the audience, and wearing it like a cape! She also took a camera onstage, snapped a photo with it and returned it to the audience. Another touching moment was when she brought a fan(who turned out to be Sharon Cuneta and Sarah Geronimo’s road manager) onstage and sang to her. She did say “Mahal kita,” but the accompanying acts were more than enough to show that she really meant it.

4) The sexy bodies!!! JLO is known for her beautiful assets which were well-displayed at the show. Aside from her gorgeous behind, the crowd openly admired JLO’s rock hard abs and smooth skin. (Note to men: real women have curves! Gone are the days when stick-thin is in!!) The girls in the audience had their fair share of eye candy as well as JLO’s male dancers took their tops off after the playful tune “Papi” displaying lean and mean torsos. Yummy!

5) The production design- the show’s several themes, Old Hollywood glamor, a boxing arena, a sexy 50s cabaret, were completely breathtaking. Each segment included laser lights, fireworks, and shiny confetti.

6) The VIP’s and celebrities in the audience - A red carpet was set up at the Mall Of Asia arena where photographers took snap shots of the steady of stars and politicians making their way to the venue. SPOTTED: Kim Chiu, Maja Salvador, Boy Abunda, Richard Gomez, Senator Bong Revilla, Lani Mercado, Jessy Mendiola, Sarah Lahbati, Anne Curtis, Divine Lee, Daniel Matsunaga, and many more!

MCS Exclusive: Kyle Patrick on going solo, his fans, and his favorite Filipino memories

Posted on 05:23 by Unknown

MCS Exclusive: Kyle Patrick on going solo, his fans, and his favorite Filipino memories
Written by: Jamie Ortega
Kyle Patrick is a force to be reckoned with. In person, the tall, lanky and undeniably handsome musician could easily be mistaken for an Ambercrombie and Fitch or Calvin Klein model. But when Kyle hits the stage- it’s a different story altogether. Infused with energy, passion, and a gifted voice that never fails to touch the heart of his fans, the front man of the power pop group The Click Five has been an integral part of the Boston-based bands’s widespread and international success, with achievements like a well-received Sophomore album Modern Minds And Pastimes, a number one single (Jenny), and a highly-successful 2008 world tour to their name.

Following the band’s stunning announcement last December 2011 that they will be on hiatus, (although Kyle has repeatedly stated in media interviews that he has not permanently left the band),  Kyle has since embarked on a solo career to showcase his own brand of music. Last November 29, 2012 the talented musician flew to Manila to perform at the opening of the new and improved Glorietta  where invited media guests, VIP’s celebrities and lucky shoppers got a taste of choice cuts from Patrick’s second EP, Kyle Patrick. In line with this, Manila Concert Scene was given the great opportunity to sit down with Kyle and talk about all the amazing things happening to him.

You are back in Manila! When was the last time you were here?
KP: I was here last month I played in Dumagete and Davao, I haven't played in Manila for a while so I am very excited

What are some of your fondest memories of the Philippines?
KP: Eating balut, first time I was here, and also the very first time I played with The Click Five. It was very early on in the band for me, it was our first show in Asia, we came all the way here, we didn’t know what to expect, we thought we were going to play at a little showcase or something and we show up at Trinoma and it was like crazy pandemonium, we were blown away, and I think that was the thing like, “whoa, Asia’s crazy,” and just like Manila in crazy was just wild. And we kept coming back here since then and now I am here for my first solo concert and it is very exciting.

How would you describe your new record?
KP: Well, I would describe it as collaborative and upbeat, anthemic and pop. I made it alone and I mean when I made it alone I made it without a record label so I did it all independently but that doesn’t mean I did it by myself, I worked with tons and tons of people especially the fans. I worked on this website called Pledge Music and it was basically this platform where people could just pre-order my album and other pieces of my merchandise like hand-written lyrics from my album.

What made you decide to work with Pledge Music and to get your fans involved in the creative process?
KP: Oh, I don’t know, I think just in general I try to do things in just a new way with this new project and I just wanted to do it more collaborative like what I was saying, in the past it just felt like a lot more closed off and being creative is hard, especially as a songwriter it’s hard to show people things that arent finished yet. It is difficult for me to just kind of get out of my comfort zone and to show people things and to get feedback very early on in the process so basically I would post these rock versions of songs for people to hear and they were nowhere near finished, I would sit along on recorders like these melodies and not what and post them for people to hear.

And there is videos of me in pajamas in the studio just recording creative ideas and I got a lot of feedback from that. I got a feel of what people liked more than others and that helped me decide on what songs to record on the album it helped me on what kind of styles to do in certain sections of songs so it was just really collaborative and I loved how it happened and it was basically me and the band and all my friends that worked together, it was amazing.

How was it like performing with Gym Class Heroes and Panic At The Disco?
KP: Those are a lot of fun, the Panic At The Disco show that was actually the MTV Asia Awards in 2008 so they were just one of many great artists. We were hanging out with The Script before they had done anything, they were awesome, so good, and we were like we knew your record is going to blow up, and probably like 6 months later they had the Man Who Cant Be Moved and they became big

Do you want to come back to Manila?
KP: Of course, yeah, I look at this stop as more of a teaser and I will come back for another concert hopefully middle to late next year 2013, I will come back for a full concert and I will probably put out a few more songs if not another EP before then. I have this other crazy music video idea I am churning out right now so we are thinking about a lot of stuff and will probably put it out in the next six months or so and I  will come back.

MCS EXCLUSIVE: Mall Of Asia Arena: Changing The Game, Elevating Entertainment

Mall Of Asia Arena: Changing The Game, Elevating Entertainment
Written by Jamie Ortega

How does one define world-class?
According to freedictionary.com world class is defined as “ranking among the foremost in the world, of an international standard of excellence.” In that regard the Mall Of Asia Arena is definitely a world-class sports and entertainment venue. With its’state of the art facilities, a 20,000 seating capacity, superb amenities like a meet and greet room, a promoters lounge, fully equipped dugouts and luxurious corporate suites it has definitely lived up to its’ description of being a premiere sports and entertainment venue.

Since its’ grand opening last May 21, 2012 many sports and entertainment aficionados have seen and experienced for themselves the exciting and comfy feel of being inside this architectural icon owned by the SM Investment Corporation and managed by West Avenue Theatres Corporation. Learn more about this truly impressive venue in this exclusive interview with SM Mall Of Asia Arena Business Unit Head Arnel Gonzales.

Tell us some of the projects the Mall Of Asia Arena has been busy with:
Well, in terms of our calendar we have been full, there has always been a happening per month. It started with our opening, the Lady Gaga concert last May, and there was our grand launch last June which featured the icons of the Philippine concert industry, and of course the back to back concert of New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys. We also had an opening of the UAAP a month after that.

We have had the visit of the NBA stars as well, the basketball challenge which featured professional players of the NBA in a friendly exhibition match. For August, our highlight show was the two week-long Cirque Du Soleil, September was the first Ateneo-Lasalle game, and the cheer dance competition where we reached our first 19,000 seating capacity mark, a total of 19,508 patrons for that competition.

October has been the busiest month of the year, and it’s nice to see the Arena has had more than its’ fair share of shows starting with Keane, and then we had the first-ever indoor dance party for David Guetta. A few days after that we had the first finals game for UAAP wherein we reached the 20,000 mark for the arena. So for us it’s been quite busy, the Jonas Brothers is one of our key shows and for November the highlight is Jennifer Lopez and the silver anniversary concert of Regine Velasquez.

What is the market of your arena?
That is a good question, we’ve experienced families for our Cirque shows, we’ve had PBA games here, the UAAP has been at home with us, and based from the feedback they gave from the players and the organizers they like that we have a bigger lower box section. We’ve had Zac Efron, we’ve had the institutional show of Bench, so we’ve had our share from the young ones to the not so young ones with Wilson Phillips, Taylor Dayne, so I guess we've been blessed that the Arena   has had various shows for all ages.

Would you say that the Mall Of Asia Arena is better than the other arenas? Why or why not?

Well, we wouldn’t say we are better-yet. We will leave it to the patrons, we will leave it to the promoters, we will leave it to the organizers. What we offer is practically the new venue, the newest venue in town. It boasts of a turnstile system, an optical turnstile system wherein we can guarantee a single entry system for our promoters, and then one of its’ unique features, the first in Southeast Asia is its’ corp seat level, and then also inside our venue is a state of the art LED ribbon system, as well as the LED pro tables.

In terms of basketball amenities we are currently using Robins flooring and Spalding basketball goals, and we are also following the FIBA regulation lines so technically we are equipped for international sporting events. Outside of that we have a fully mechanized patron section at the ground floor wherein it gives our promoters the opportunity to be creative in terms of how they can use the floor as a stage set-up.

So, if you notice that the stages are different per show, it is due to the production directive. We have a more elongated design than round, and it gives enough leverage to have more seats, if the promoters want a stage that is wide they can have that or we can adjust it to a snug set-up wherein its’ really intimate. Plus another key feature that we have is that our general admission section has actual seats.

What are some of your most attended events?
Well, yung concerts as a whole, depende. When you say seating capacities it depends on the structure, it depends on how the stage is laid out, or what are the sections that can be open based on the stage design. So iba’t iba talaga ang mga considerations, but in terms of capacity I believe we are at par with other venues but the key feature is that we have a bigger lower box section and a bigger patron section, so when it comes to the premium priced ticket, we have more.

Was the design of Mall Of Asia Arena based on any other venue?
As far as design is concerned what we mirrored is the one of Philips Arena in Atlanta Georgia.  The seating design is based on that so yung distance, yung viewing angles are considered. In terms of the land footprint that we have available for the venue, it is very similar to Philips. The land footprint that we have is similar to the land footprint of Philips. Arquitectonica, a US-based firm designed the Arena, they also designed Mall Of Asia.

What can people look forward to in the coming months?

Well we are in the finalization stage of the NBA Café, the first of its’ kind in Asia. We will be having more popular in- house brands like Krispy Kreme and of course now we have Starbucks both inside and outside the venue. We will have more palatable reasons for our patrons to come dine before the show and after the show. One of our features is, of course we respect our patrons who are smokers, so we have well-appointed 15 smoking lounges almost 2 to 4 per floor. Our smoking lounges are managed by the group Cravings where our patrons can enjoy a cup of tea or cold drinks and it is all in-house.

THE FRAY to perform live in Manila, November 10 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum

Posted on 02:35 by Unknown

With big sprawling anthems and light-rock ballads, American rock band The Fray is set to take the stage for their first Philippine concert on November 10, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Colisuem as presented by That’s Ntertainment.

Six years since their massive breakthrough success of their debut record "How to Save a Life" in 2005, the band continued pumping sky-groping choruses and symphonic rushes. Colorado’s beloved quartet spawned the Grammy-nominated singles “Over My Head” and “How to Save a Life” off that record to the repeated success with hits “You Found Me” and “Never Say Never.”

“Our live shows are a different animal altogether from our records. It’s a whole different energy when the four of us are on stage. It’s almost like the record happens. It’s great! We’ll play new songs and old songs as well. We’ll go jukebox,” Isaac Slade, also known as The Fray’s frontman, main songwriter, pianist told during a recent interview with The Philippine Star.

As The Fray move forward from their ballads that soundtracks rom-coms and teen soap operas, this Grammy-nominated foursome continues to receive praises for their third full-length album "Scars & Stories". Recorded at Nashville's legendary Blackbird studio with veteran producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Rage Against the Machine), the making of "Scars & Stories" fostered the most evolution the band has ever experienced, both lyrically and musically. The album debuted at #4 on the Billboard Hot 200 and has produced two hit singles already, “Heartbeat” and “Run For Your Life.”

On the band's website, Slade shared his thoughts on the latest installment: "On our first record, we didn't quite trust ourselves yet. We loosened up on the second album, but there was still some element of restraint. But on this one, we just stepped up to plate and swung as hard as we could."

With Slade’s co-founding member of The Fray, Joe King, collectively they achieved national success with their first single, "Over My Head (Cable Car)," which became a top ten hit in the U.S., and the release of their second single, "How to Save a Life," brought them worldwide fame. “How To Save a Life” was featured in the hit TV Series Grey’s Anatomy and Scrubs, making it one of the most played and widely recognized song in that 2006-2007. The song’s inspired lyrics came from an encounter Slade had with a boy with drug problems and realizing that all the boy need was support from his friends and family.

“Never Say Never” also from their second album was featured in the movie Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen, allowing them to increase their loyal fan following worldwide. The band has also been nominated at the 2007 Grammy Awards for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or a Group and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or a Group.

The Fray is Isaac Slade (pianist and vocalist), Joe King (guitarist and vocalist), Dave Welsh (guitarist) and Ben Wysocki (drummer). The Denver-based foursome formed in 2002 after high school friends Slade and King bumped into each other at a local guitar shop.

With a set that includes a mix of their new songs and then some of your favorite The Fray hits--from the requisite "How to Save a Life" to "You Found Me" to "Heartbeat"-- you would not want to miss the experience why many found their music beyond inspiration.

The Fray is set to perform live in Manila on November 10, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets are available at Ticketnet (www.ticketnet.com.ph)  or call 911 5555 for reservation.

GREYSON CHANCE Live! at Ayala Malls this November 2012

Posted on 03:03 by Unknown

Ayala Malls, home to the best live entertainment continues its tradition of bringing some of the most remarkable performances of both foreign and local acts in the country as it presents 15 year old American teen pop singer-songwriter and pianist GREYSON CHANCE for a series of concerts and promotions. He shall be delighting fans with his enthralling voice and amazing talent as he performs at the Ayala malls on November 11, 2012. Catch him at Market! Market! Activity Center at 2:30 pm and TriNoma Activity Center at 6:30 pm.

Platinum-selling artist GREYSON CHANCE has seen places of the world most people only dream of visiting. To promote his debut album Hold On 'Til The Night, Greyson traveled across the world which helped propel Hold On 'Til The Night to Platinum status in Indonesia and the Philippines, and to Gold status in Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Along this journey, Greyson met thousands of loyal fans around the globe, each of whom helped inspire a brand new creative state of mind for him.
This new outlook can be witnessed in his latest release, the new single "Sunshine & City Lights", exclusively under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines). The product of a serendipitous last minute studio session in London with songwriting duo The Nexus, this new song is a perfect reflection of Greyson's artistry and vocal talent, free of the production that is ever-present in contemporary music. "Sunshine & City Lights" is the first taste of the new music Greyson has been working on for nearly a year. While he continues work on a full-length album to be released in 2013, Greyson has decided to give fans a taste of what's to come through this new single and EP. Entitled Truth Be Told part 1, the EP is slated for release in parts of this world by end of October this year.
