Concert Review: Foster The People Pumps Up Manila!

Title: Foster The People Pumps Up Manila!
Written by Jamie Ortega

I must admit, when I heard that Indie-pop act Foster The People was going to Manila for a one-night show, I had my doubts. The three man band made up of vocalist/songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Mark Foster, bassist Cubbie Fink, and drummer Mark Pontious only had one hit to their name, the infectious and upbeat Pumped Up Kicks, which, in my mind, was certainly not enough to fill up the Araneta Coliseum.

Boy, was I wrong! (And pleasantly surprised, I might add). As soon as I entered the Big Dome last October 8, 2012 I saw a large crowd full of fans crazy about the group’s signature electronica stylings, heavy hooks, and infectious rhythms. Hipsters and non-hipsters alike (although I must say there were a lot of hipsters), immediately showed their love for the group by standing on their seats as early as the band’s first song, the sleek and heavy hooked Miss You. After listening to their first round of tunes, I slowly began to understand their appeal, why people were instantly drawn to the indie electronic outfit’s hypnotic disco pop sound, –in a landscape full of forgettable auto-tune manufactured hits, the band’s diverse musical stylings ranging from foot stomping arcade game-sounding anthems to wailing ballads, all covered in reverb-heavy synths, is a breath of fresh air indeed!
By the time the second song, Life On The Nickel, came on, the Big Dome was starting to look like a lit up boulevard as thousands of people threw up their glow sticks in the air and began to scream. But more than just the crowd’s reaction to the band, props must indeed be given to the three lads as well because they really did all they could to give their audience a great show. Mark Foster lived up to the many slashes in his name by running from instrument to instrument- clad in a white jacket the good-looking vocalist started Life On The Nickel by playing on the piano then immediately ran to the drums playing across Mark Pontious, before going to the mike stand then back to the piano.

One could really see the passion and heart the group had for their music as the third song and fourth songs, Houdini and Broken Jaw, came on. It wasn’t any kind of passion mind you; it was an infectious kind of passion that made the crowd start to sing the song’s lyrics in unison. Pleased by the reaction of the audience, front man Foster began to head bang while playing the piano before stretching his arms sideways and  doing a little dance on stage. Even if you aren’t a hard-core fan, the intense and fun-filled presence of the group on stage makes it worth every penny.

Let’s face it- I don’t know about you but I think I am a little sick and tired of the usual “Mahal kita, salamat,” greetings from foreign acts. Good thing Mark Foster went a little further by sharing in between songs a connection the front man had to our country. Foster revealed that his grandfather, who served in the military, lived in Manila in the ‘40s while his dad who was a hippie, stayed in Manila for two years back in the ‘70s. “My dad told me he watched a band play here back in 1973,” Foster shared to the audience. “I’m older than my dad when he was here.”
He was also amused at the fact that the Big Dome was where boxer Muhammad Ali fought Joe Frazier during the historic Thrilla In Manila. “You guys got history. You guys got passion,” he marveled. “You guys have Manny Pacquiao, the best boxer since Ali,” he added.

After performing Broken Jaw, the boys launched into a crowd favorite, Would Do Anything For You, followed by Waste and Love. Aside from the music, I also liked the play of lights that lit the stage, from purple to red, to yellow; they made the show even more vibrant and appealing to watch. Among all of the songs, I think I enjoyed Call It What You Want the most because it was where Foster played around with the audience. He sang the “woooohoooo,” part of the song and made the audience do the same, an act that made him reveal a conversation he had with Maroon 5 guitarist James Valentine. According to Valentine, the best thing he remembers about Manila was that everyone had perfect pitch- a comment which elicited even more cheers and screams from the crowd. He ended the song by jumping around, dancing onstage, playing on the keyboards and drums again. I was seriously getting tired just watching the whole group perform onstage!

Call It What You Want was followed by Don’t Stop (Color On TheWalls), Warrant, and Helena Beat. After a total of 11 songs the group called it a night by performing two more songs for their encore, Ruby and their biggest hit to date, Pumped Up Kicks. To end the night, Foster jumped into the audience shaking hands and mingling with people as two white inflatable balloons rose up onstage. Needlessly to say, everyone walked out of Araneta Coliseum pumped and incredibly happy. As if the entire show wasn’t enough to make any non-convert morph into a Foster The People fan, did you know that they didn’t have a sound check before the show? That’s how effortlessly good they are!

Celebrities spotted in the audience: Anne Curtis, Khalil Ramos, John James Uy

JAMES MORRISON Live! In Manila: The Awakening World Tour

Posted on 07:32 by Unknown

A special evening is in store for Filipinos as the English singer-songwriter and guitarist JAMES MORRISON performs in Manila on October 9, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

JAMES MORRISON achieved worldwide success in 2006 with the release of his debut single “You Give Me Something.” His first album, Undiscovered under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines), debuted at the top of the UK Album Chart and sold millions of copies, making him the biggest-selling British male solo artist in 2006. The album, which also has the hit singles “Wonderful World,” and “The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore” won him a BRIT Award in 2007 for Best British Male Solo Artist.

JAMES MORRISON is currently touring to promote his album, The Awakening, released in September 2011 also under MCA Music. As the title of his third and by far best album suggests, The Awakening is the sound of an artist coming of age. In his personal life, Morrison has become a father, while losing his own father after the latter’s long battle with alcoholism and depression. At the same time, Morrison, 26, has matured as a singer, songwriter and musician, enabling him to channel all of that emotion into his most accomplished collection of songs yet. “My first two albums felt like practice shots,” he says, “and now I’ve graduated. In many ways this feels like my first proper album.” Fortunately, The Awakening has turned out to be the album that Morrison always had the potential to make – at last a worthy platform for his extraordinary singing voice. “This time I wasn’t worrying about success at all, and that’s why it was really enjoyable. I didn’t feel I had to go for the big, loud notes all the time – I just sat back and sang how I felt and it all just came flooding out.”

The Awakeningis a warm, live-sounding collection of classic but contemporary folk-soul songs. There are musical similarities with Morrison’s debut, but with added panache and self-belief. There are soaring strings, uplifting harmonies, soulful ballads and, in Slave to the Music, a hand-clapping dance floor groover – a new string to his bow. There are nods to Motown, gospel, country and a hint of Latin. Technically, Morrison remains one of the finest white soul singers, equal parts Stevie Wonder and Paul Young. But he is more than just a Big Voice – he sings from the heart. “To me, pop music is just great music that lasts for years,” he says. “Though there is the other side of pop, which is where you have a hit, but then, after it comes out, it never gets heard again. I never wanted to make that sort of music.”

JAMES MORRISON’s albums are out now in CDs exclusively under MCA Music available at Astroplus and Odyssey Music and Video or online via iTunes and www.MyMusicStore.com.ph

Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Catch Keane Live in Manila

Posted on 19:26 by Unknown
Top 10 Reasons Why You Should Catch Keane Live in Manila
Written by Jamie Ortega

Prepare to be electrified as Keane, one of the biggest British alternative rock bands in THE WORLD, mesmerizes Manila with its’ unique brand of music on October 2, 2012 at the SM Mall Of Asia Arena. Not excited?  Here are 10 reasons why you should be.

1) They are trailblazers. We are of course talking about singer Tom Chaplin, pianist Tim Rice-Oxley, drummer Richard Hughes, and bassist Jesse Quin who all thought about making an album without the use of guitars. While other bands have guitars as the focal point of their music, Keane decided to focus on the piano. The result? Their platinum-selling debut album Hopes And Fears

2) Let the numbers speak for themselves- 9,000,000 –the number of copies Hopes And Fears sold worldwide. 4-the number their second album Under The Sea debuted on the US billboard charts. 1- the number their third album Perfect Symmetry reached on the UK charts within a week of release , making them one of three bands in UK pop history to have five consecutive number 1 albums. Need we say more?
3) The Keane sound. Keane is known for its’ very emotional style- a mesmerizing fusion of piano driven ballads, booming choral arrangements and emotionally–charged orchestrations that never fails to tug at the heartstrings of their fans

4) They wear their hearts on their sleeves- well, sorta. Keane’s lyrics talk about love, loyalty, friendship and nostalgia, sentiments that people can relate to, but they do it in quite a cryptic manner. Instead of spoon feeding it to their audience, the band encourages their listeners to interpret the songs in their own way.

5) The band isn’t afraid to experiment. While Hopes And Fears had more of a piano-rooted rock feel, their second album Under The Iron Sea was laced with tinges of electronica. A risk which ultimately paid off because the album reached the number one spot in the UK and debuted at number 4 in the Billboard’s Top 200 list PLUS received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance. The band finally made use of guitar in their 3rd album Perfect Symmetry which resulted in a number of hit singles like The Lovers Are Losing, Love Is The End, and Better Than This. Seriously, these guys can do no wrong!

6) They’re in 3D! In 2009 Keane became the first ever band to broadcast a live show in 3D. The show was held in Abbey Rod in London. They played the song Better Than This. If that isn't cool we don’t know what is!

7) Somewhere Only We Know. If you haven’t heard of this song let me help you out of that rock you've been living under.  The phenomenal  third single from their first album has been covered by music greats Natasha Bedingfield, Lifehouse, and the entire cast of Glee.

8) They are such determined lads. Did you know that they recorded their debut album Hopes And Fears at pianist Tim Rice-Oxyley’s parents farmhouse and cows kept on showing up?

9) They are very multi-talented! Other bands have members solely focused on their instruments. But not Keane! The tune Your Love from the album Night Train featured songwriter pianist Tim Rice-Oxley on lead vocals for the very first time! According to lead vocalist Tom Chaplin, they liked Tim’s demo vocals of the song so much they decided to keep it that way. “"Had we gone into the studio intending to make a full album, I don't think we would have given Tim the job of singing. But because of the way we made this record, we just ran out of time to record my vocals for it. The longer we lived with the demo vocal Tim had done for it, the more we liked it. I really love that song and love the spirit in which it came about as well,” Chaplain explains

10) It’s their first time to perform in Manila- so grab your tickets now!

David Cook mesmerizes Manila once more

Title: David Cook mesmerizes Manila once more
Written by Jhoanne Mariano
Photos by Magic Liwanag Photography

Who could ever forget that one memorable television performance back in 2008? As music lovers can recall, There was a  specific song played many times on local radio stations, an unexpected brilliant rock version of a cheerful Mariah Carey #1 song, “Always Be My Baby.” The tune, popularized by American Idol Season 7 winner David Cook immediately rocketed to #1 on iTunes (U.S.) becoming  the Most Requested Song all over the Philippines.

Fans of Always Be My Baby heard the song for themselves as the Season 7 American Idol brezzed through Manila last 14thof July for his solo concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum after which he also performed at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu the next day. Members of the media were given an opportunity to meet the Idol winner at a press conference a day before his shows at the EDSA Shangri-La hotel in Ortigas.

At his press conference at the EDSA Shangri-La hotel, Cook couldn’t stop talking praising the Philippines.   He found this ”incredibly beautiful” and  found the Filipino people and his Filipino fans inviting and friendly.”He also mentioned, during the conference, that he has been “amazingly blessed” and that being able to perform beyond the United States was “so far beyond [his] dreams.”

He also revealed several things about the latest season of American Idol. He said, “The last season of Idol, I thought it was interesting. It was one of the first seasons I’ve ever watched where I couldn’t really get a pulse on what the American public was thinking.”

Regarding Jessica Sanchez, “I had a chance actually to meet Jessica...” and he said that Jessica is a “sincere” person and “to hear her sing, it’s ridiculous… she’s so good and what’s scary about it is she’s so young!” He also compared Jessica Sanchez with his former competitor, David Archuleta mentioning, “Archie is so good at such a young age… how good can this person get?! And I look at Jessica the same way.” Cook found it difficult to find the right words to express what he thinks of the latest Idol runner up and settled with “she’s just really REALLY good!”

Cook’s closing remarks during the  press conference expressed how happy he is to be in Manila“I honestly thank you for having us out here again. I’m continuously amazed that I get to do this. This is ridiculous; I’m having a press conference halfway around the world… Hopefully we get to see you guys at these shows and you guys will have a good time because I know we will.”

***

His concert began at around 9 in the evening at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.  Everybody was alive and cheering for Cook as  he entered the stage clad in all-black.  He started the night with a song from his latest album released June 2011, “Circadian” and “Heroes” with a “Champagne Supernova” snippet by the Oasis followed by “Mr. Sensitive” which were both from his 2008 self-titled album.

Before his next song, Cook said, “Manila, are you ready to have some fun tonight?”(as if they are not having the time of their lives yet.) He then performed “Declaration” (2008) and he also sang “If I leave here tomorrow…”- the first line of “Freebird” which is a song by Lynyrd Skynyrd. His fifth song was “The Last Goodbye,” one of the two singles from his second album, This Loud Morning.

Cook mentioned that they are working on a new album which made him ask he crowd “If you guys are okay with it, can we play one of these new songs tonight?” The crowd screaming in approval, he performed “From Here To Zero” which was the first live version of the song.

Then they performed “Hard To Believe” and “I Did It For You.” The crowd’s energy delighted Cook as he said, “You guys are incredible, I have to say that!”

For his ninth songthat night, he performed “The Last Song I’ll Write For You” which is a self-released single produced last May 2012. He regularly checks the crowd in between performances, “So are you good? Are we doing good?” He then sang “Paper Heart” and one of his hit singles from his self-titled album, “Come Back To Me.”

He reminisced back to his first visit in Manila and said, “So, we are very happy to be back in Manila. Thank you so much for having us. Our first time was in 2009. We shared the stage with a good friend of mine, who I understand has blossomed into quite the actor around here, Mr. David Archuleta."

“This is far removed from our last show in Manila. Any time anyone asks me about what's your favorite show you've done, I always tell this story. Forgive me, it's a bit long,” said Cook.

He continued, "So, I always say, we went off to Manila, the Philippines. And what I see is this amazing view...looked out over roughly a hundred thousand people and I thought, wow, half-way around the world to a place I've never been before and all these people are singing my songs back to me, very strange. So, thank you for that!"

His story was then followed by “Goodbye To The Girl” and his 2008 hit single, “Light On.” He even paused in the middle of the song to hear the crowd sing the lyrics back to him which was quite a scene.

For his fourteenth song, he performed “Rock And Roll” which is a song by the English rock band Led Zeppelin. He also helped with the drums before ending the song and he looked like he was really having a whole lottafun playing with it. Which brings us to his next song, “Whole Lotta Love” also by Led Zeppelin – he sang the first verse and skipped the next two verses and of course, he sang the chorus.

It was then followed by “Bar-Ba-Sol” which was his hit single released April of 2009. After that David Cook took a bow and they left the stage but no one was fooled, they all knew that the show wasn’t over.

For his encore set, he performed his genius hit remake, “Always Be My Baby.” Philippines’ Pop Rock Princess, YengConstantino surprised the crowd when she entered the stage and did a duet with him. Cook was astounded by her voice and praised her, “Wow! What a voice! I wish I could sing that well!”

He then performed an acoustic version of “Fade Into Me” which was his second single from his second album. And then his last performance was “Rapid Eye Movement,” and he even played the drums to finish off his performance with a loud bang! Thanks to Dayly Entertainment for making this event possible.
