Concert-Goer of the Month(April 2012): LIV5:2/16/12

Posted on 07:58 by Unknown

Title: LIV5:2/16/12
Written and Photos by: Stephany Bracewell

Pre-concert:
I literally screamed when I found out about LIV5! The thought of possibly seeing my favorite bands live was something that was on my mind constantly. I just couldn't wait! I even entered MMI contests for meet and greets! I was so glad when I found out that I won. I found out that I was going to meet Forever The Sickest Kids and I just couldn't stop shaking!

During the Concert:
I arrived earlier and I saw the line, so many people were already there! Some even came at like 9AM! Now that's dedication. I got my meet and greets from MMI and I just couldn't stop shaking at the thought of finally meeting FTSK. I was alone at the venue but then I saw some of my friends who I had because of bands. I finally went inside the venue and so many people were there, already screaming even before the bands came. The Philippine crowd is probably the best, that's one thing about the Philippines that I really love and I am so proud to have been part of the crowd. A+ dropouts started playing and they were impressive! They sounded really good! Then they started to introduce the summer set and I just couldn't stop screaming, it felt so good to finally hear them live! I have been waiting to hear them for quite a while.
I made a sign that said "Say hi to Steph" and John Gomez actually did say hi to me, it was unbelievable! Brian Dales even said "Mahal kita!" to the crowd and it was just so amazing and finally seeing Jess Bowen (the drummer) was just so surreal. I look up to The Summer Set a lot! The Ready Set started playing and I was so shocked when I heard them, they sounded so good live! My signs worked again because Jordan said hi to me three times! That recognition you get from the band members is the best feeling you'd ever get. We were called for the meet and greets, I had to admit that I was nervous but Forever The Sickest Kids were people who were just so genuine that you don't have have to be nervous! I hugged all of them, I even proposed to Caleb Turman and Kyle Burns and they both agreed to marrying me, we were all joking of course! They were such amazing people that I will never forgot how I met them!

Meeting FTSK was beyond my wildest  dreams, never thought that it would actually happen but it did! After the meet and greet, it was already A Rocket To The Moon's set, I have been waiting for them too! They were really amazing and they sang almost all of my favorite songs! Justin Richards was even aiming at me when he threw his pick! Nick Santino and Justin Richards even said hi to me twice! My signs worked!! It was time for FTSK, the moment I've been waiting for! They play their first song and I knew that their set was going to be amazing! They were all great performers! Caleb and Austin remembered me from the meet and greet and Jonathan even said hi to my friends and I during the show! That kind of connection with the bands felt great!
In all honesty, concerts are really important to me, bands/artists bring people together, they give you the night of your lives. I met a couple of people that I would never forget, concerts make you feel infinite.

The best part of LIV5 was never even thinking that you'd be in that venue with the bands of your dreams, singing along to your favorite songs, it was just so surreal and I would do anything just to go back! I never even knew that these bands know about the Philippines but now, I'm pretty sure they'd never forget about it! The experience was just so amazing, it was a chance of a lifetime! Literally had the best night of my life! The thrill of going to concerts will never get old, the feeling is just so priceless! I am so thankful to have been part of LIV5!

After the concert, FTSK even tweeted our meet and greet photo, it was insane! They even wrote "MANILA UNDERDOGS!" and it was just something that I am really proud of!

THE STYLISTICS serenades Filipino fans at the Smart Araneta Coliseum

Posted on 04:56 by Unknown

Celebrate the music of best-known Philadelphia soul group of the 1970sas That’sNtertainment Productions, in cooperation with ABS-CBN, present THE STYLISTICS Live in Manila happening on April 12, 2012, 8pm at Smart Araneta Coliseum.  Their special guests are Rico J. Puno and Elizabeth Ramsey.

The Stylistics have been recording and touring for almost forty years and enjoyed twelve straight Top 10 hits from 1971-1974. These includetheir stellar debut"Betcha by Golly, Wow", "Stop, Look, Listen (To Your Heart)", "You Are Everything", "I'm Stone in Love with You", "Break Up to Make Up", andthe shimmering sweet soul ballad "You Make Me Feel Brand New".Their early 70s work with producer Thom Bell and his collaborator, lyricist Linda Creed yielded some of the most popular love songs of that era.

Known for their sleek, soulful Philadelphia sound, this quartet has been performing for nearly 40 years and became a worldwide-favorite for their showmanship, harmony and style.  Formed in 1968, The Stylistics was originally comprised lead Russell Thompkins, Jr., Herbie Murrell, Airrion Love, James Smith, and James Dunn. After the original group disbanded in the 80s, Love, Murrell, and Thompkins continued to tour until 2000 and brought in two new members from one set of the Delfonics - Harold Eban Brown as lead singer, and tenor Van Fields who also sang with an a cappella group called A Perfect Blend. In 2011, Fields departed and was replaced with Jason Sharpe (formerly with Heatwave).

In 2008 they recorded their latest album, That Same Way. The new album marks as their first album of new material this century but still filled with sweet soul spirit that initially made The Stylistics famous.Their song, "People Make the World Go Round", was used by Spike Lee in the soundtrack for 1994 film Crooklyn, as performed by Marc Dorsey.

As That’s Ntertainment Productions brings one of the finest acts of the 70’s, The Stylistics-- consisting of founding members Airrion Love and Herb Murrell and newer additions Van Fields and Eban Brown—will definitely spark fond memories in an amazing night for fans of Soul and R&B genres decades ago.

K-Pop Star Jay Park Releases “NEW BREED”; Tours Manila this May

Posted on 04:42 by Unknown

Making yet another transformation, K-Pop star Jay Park’s “New Breed” is ready to shake up the music industry.

Working with top U.S. producer Rob Knox, rap group Dynamic Duo and other top artists to bring you the freshest sounds in R&B and Electronic hip-hop, Jay Park opens up his world like you’ve never seen before.

Jay Park comes back onto the music scene after taking a year off.
With last year’s mini-album “Take A Deeper Look” Jay Park brushed off his ‘idol image’ and stepped up as a solo singer.  This time around with his first full-length album “New Breed”, he matures even more into an all-around musician.

As with his last mini-album, Jay Park again holds the reins as album producer.  Writing over 80% of the songs, he cements his status as a world-class singer-songwriter.

The album’s title track “Know Your Name” is an addictive blend of hip-hop, pop and Euro dance, taking the listener on a hypnotic journey.  And with Jay Park’s trademark hard-hitting lyrics and catchy chorus, “Know Your Name” is sure to be 2012’s biggest hit.

Totaling 15 tracks, this album is sure to catch the eyes and ears of listeners.
With tracks ranging from R&B to dance, electronic hip-hop to Euro dance, listeners will hear sounds they’ve never heard before and meet a brand new Jay Park.

Famed U.S. producer Rob Knox, who previously worked with artists such as Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, Chris Brown and Britney Spears, lends his talented hand, elevating the album to another level.  Add to those collaborations with Dynamic Duo, dok2 and The Quiett, among others, and this makes for one complete album fans will not want to miss.

Get ready to be transformed as Jay Park tours Manila this May at Megaworld Lifestyle Malls. Watch out for more announcements or log on to www.facebook.com/mcamusic.

“New Breed” is now out under MCA Music in CDs at leading record stores or online via www.mymusicstore.com.ph.

Concert Review: Hanson Heats Up Manila

Posted on 04:04 by Unknown

Title: Hanson Heats Up Manila
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Kris Rocha
Back in the 90s, when Internet was a mere illusion, teen idols were plain images their fans would see in BOP, Teen Beat, Tiger Beat, and other teenybopper magazines. Their supporters would catch them on TV every so often, but with foreign concerts extremely scarce back then meeting them in person seemed like it would never happen. With the resurgence of all these 90s bands making a comeback, 90s kids (like this writer) are given a renewed sense of vigor, that their childhood fantasies can, in fact, become a reality.

Like they say, one should never stop dreaming, because life, in all its’ unpredictability, can give you a wonderful whack. When this writer was back in high school and struggling with the usual issues kids cope with, (bullies, grades, and in this case the death of her mom, and remarrying of her dad)  Hanson tunes I Will Come To You and With In Your Dreams helped her with her journey. Fast forward 15 years later and to just be given the chance to tell these things straight to the band’s face at their press conference for their two day concert  entitled Hanson Shout It Tour Live In Manila was an unbelievably surreal experience- to say the least.  So surreal that this writer forgot what they replied to her, but to just be afforded that chance was more than enough.

To those unfamiliar with the band, (and I am surmising probably didn’t grow up in the ‘90s), Hanson is made up of brothers Isaac, Taylor, and Zac. Their debut album Middle Of Nowhere sold 10 million copies worldwide and earned the band three Grammy nominations. Known for their soul-inspired-brand of American pop-rock n roll, some of their most popular tunes are MMMBOP, Where’s The Love, and I Will Come To You. Lo and behold, like a dream come true, Hanson performed in Manila last March 30 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum and March 31 at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel as part of their Shout It Our World Tour.

The crowd at the show, made up mostly of female yuppies (including a KC Concepcion standing on a chair in the front row nearly the entire time), screamed with excitement as the trio kicked off the show with a relatively new tune, Waiting For This, from their newest album Shout It Out. With charisma emanating from nearly every pore of their bodies, Taylor took charge of the piano, Isaac strummed away with his guitar, and Zac banged away on the drums.

By the time they took on their second song, their 1997 hit Where’s The Love, it was apparent how the band’s sound as a whole changed. There’s still a sugary sweet tinge to their musical styling but there is also a new depth in their voices, a soulful, bluesy edge as they clapped their hands while singing the song’s bridge. One thing that didn’t change? The band’s hair flips, their utterly charming smiles, and their undeniable passion for music.

Taylor seemed to be the most energetic of the three as he would clap his hands while playing the piano in between songs. I couldn’t help but notice, however, how the screen at the Smart Araneta Coliseum would focus on Zac every so often. Talk about more than a little camera time!

“It’s fun to be back in the Philippines thanks for joining us, we are taking you back to 1997,” introduced Taylor, before launching into one of their biggest hits, Thinking Of You. The nostalgic fest was continued with This Time Around from their 2000 compilation bearing the same name as well as Penny And Me from their sixth studio commercial album.

One of their most applauded numbers was With You In Your Dreams which Taylor commented they always wanted to perform with a gospel choir. It was as if the entire Coliseum was transported to the 90s ( and this writer was transported to her highschool days as she would play the Hanson cassette tape before crying herself to sleep)as the band performed with gusto. “I heard you guys could sing,” commented Taylor, “You’re right, you guys can sing,” he said, just before the song ended.

As expected another number which made the crowd go crazy was Mmmbop. Taylor acknowledged how the song put them on the map and how they hope they will perform for another r15 years (and for as long as they may live, we hope!). This was one of their most energetic numbers, with Taylor standing up and running around the stage, encouraging people to sing with them.

For their encore, their first hit If Only, Taylor posed another challenge. “We know you guys can make noise the thing is can you jump?” Needless to say everyone was jumping around and screaming and, I am pretty sure, transported in their own way, to the good ole days. To paraphrase a line from MMMbop may this night remind everyone from every era to follow the MMMbop philosophy, to "hold on to the ones who really care. In the end they'll be the only ones there".

Other celebrities spotted at the event: Kean Cipriano, Alex Gonzaga and Baron Geisler.

Coca-Cola Concert: A Concert Full Of Smiles

Posted on 03:51 by Unknown
Title: Coca-Cola Concert: A Concert Full Of Smiles
Photos and Written by Kevin Pableo
Edited by Jamie Ortega

To celebrate their 100 years of making people happy, Coca-Cola Philippines organized a free concert last March 23, 2012 entitled “Concert ng Bayan”. The festival featured some of the best local acts in the country including a special performance by international R and B superstar, Craig David. In keeping with their promise to make the Filipino people happy, the selection of  performers to be included in the concert was done through a survey on their Facebook LIKE page: (https://www.facebook.com/PresidentforHappiness).

The people who couldn’t make it to the venue viewed the concert online over at www.coca-cola.com.ph. Check out 15 of the coolest moments from the show. How did you find the show? LET US KNOW!

1) DJ Q-York whet the audience’s appetite with a riveting compilation of R and B hits.

2) Fresh from their sold-out concert, comedy duo Jose and Wally opened the show.  MYX VJs Bianca Roque, Chino Lui-Pio, Mike Advincula, PBB host Robi Domnigo, and  Monster RX 93.1 DJ Gino Quillamor took turns hosting the festival.

3) Everyone’s favorite pop-rock band Callalily performed their hearts out with some of their best hits including Stars, Magbalik and Susundan. Frontman Kean Cipriano kept the girls screaming with his heartfelt performance of Magbalik. In the middle of Magbalik the charismatic singer strummed the guitar while asking the audience to put their cellphones in the air. For their next numbers the band performed alongside former Sugarfree frontman Ebe Dancel, their performances churning out unbelievable musical chemistry as they sang each other’s songs, BBS’ Wala Na Tayo and Sugarfree’s Tulog Na. In keeping with the show’s theme Kean wore a red pair of pants. Do we smell an album collaboration sometime soon? We hope so!

4) The onstage collaborations kept on coming! Sandwich paid tribute to Eraserheads’ epic hit “With A Smile” by performing it, an action which made the crowd dutifully show their pearly whites. The musical duo became a trio as soon as Jay Durias appeared onstage. Sandwich frontman Raymond joked, “If you know the words, if you think you know them more than I do, can you sing with me?” Don’t you love it when rock icons are so down to earth?

5) Old school met new school as 6cyclemind performed with Eunice of Grancenote and Kleggy of Ang Banda ni Kleggy. Frontman Tutti Caringal asked the audience to sing the 6 Cyclemind song “Sandalan” with him which they did, and in tune, too! Pretty amazing!

6) The age-old metal versus hiphop rivalry has been over and done with. Need further proof? Rock blended with rap as Wolfgang lived up to its’ name and rocked the audience to the corewith a fierce performance of Halik Ni Hudas. The band was joined by prolific rapper Gloc-9. Who says rap and rock are worlds apart? We hope there are more collaboration like this in the future.

7) Heir apparent to Master Rapper Francis M, Gloc-9 ruled the stage with the song Hari Ng Tondo. He was joined by GMA 7’s Protégé contestant, Denise Barbacena. Whoever said OPM is dead? Judging by the sheer talent onstage it IS LIVE AND KICKING!!

8) One of the most applauded performances that night was by the band Parokya Ni Edgar. They entertained the crowd with some of their biggest hits including, “Halaga”, “Yes, Yes, Show” “Picha Pie”, and “Buloy.”  The band added a dash of comedic flavor to each of their performances, producing a lively concoction which the audience definitely enjoyed.

9) Electronic pop artist and teen heartthrob Somedaydream proved why he is being dubbed as the country’s answer to Owl City with his lively rendition of his hit single Hey Daydreamer.  Somedaydream’s talent manager Champ Lui Pio is right, it is time embrace a new kind of music flavor, and the electronic pop artist is setting the wheels in motion.“Thank you so much guys, galling nyo kumanta, yeah,” he said before wrapping up his performance.

10) The Coke concert became a royal event with the addition of Popstar Princess Sarah Geronimo. The female performer sang a mixture of slow and fast hits like “End of Time” by Beyonce, “Super Bass” by Nicki Minaj, “Someone Like You” by Adele and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You. Sarah displayed an amazing flair for rapping during Super Bass. We swear there is NOTHING she cannot do! She replaced the lyrics of Super Bass with “Please tell us who the F I is, I am Sarah G” Yes, and there will be nobody like you! Before singing I Will Always Love You Sarah expressed her love for the late Whitney Houston by saying “We lost another icon but of course her beautiful music will remain in her hearts.

11) Mr. Pure Energy proved why he is idolized by hundreds of younger generations of artists with his heartfelt performance of Walang Hanggan. The mood shifted from romantic to electrifying as soon as he was joined onstage by his son Gab. They performed the Jay Sean tune 2012 which made the crowd do just do that -party on 2012! Gary V apologized for all the sweat falling from his body. We didn’t mind because what they did was nothing short of epic.

12) Mega trio Gary V, Sarah G and Somedaydream performed Coca-Cola Philippines 100th Anniversary theme song, “Tuloy”. May Coke continue to be a part of our lives for the next 100 years! What is your favorite Coke memory? Share it with us!

13) Making it feel like it’s Christmas (in the middle of summer), a building projection appeared atop the building of Two E-Com Center. The visual projection chronicled Coke’s campaigns throughout the years. The visual spectacle was followed by a dazzling  7-minute firework display.

14) It’s been four years since his last performance in Manila, and with that in mind British R and B superstar Craig David certainly made up for his absence by performing some of his  greatest hits: “Don’t Love You No More”, “Unbelievable”, “7 Days” “Walking Away”, “What’s Your Flava”. The buff and talented R and B act sang 8 songs, capping his performance with his latest hit “Insomnia”. During the press conference a couple of hours ago Craig said he dedicates Insomnia to his Filipino fans because they inspire him to keep him awake as he writes songs. How sweet! Craig also spoke about Tuberculosis, one of his charities, and encouraged everyone in the audience to know more about how to prevent the disease.

15) Capping the musical extravaganza was Rico Blanco, Chicosci, Never the Strangers, Spongecola, and Pupil. Talk about 13 hours of pure musical satisfaction! The show started at 3 pm and ended at 4 am the next day. Over 50,000+ people were in attendance for one of the biggest concerts in Philippine music history. We cant wait till next year!

Thank you to Wilbros Live and Coca-Cola Philippines for making all of this possible.
