Cobra Starship is an American pop punk/synthpop band which was founded in Arizona by Gabe Saporta back in 2005. At that time, Gab wanted to create a band with a melodic style of music that is heavily influenced by synthpop and hip hop. After his trip to Arizona, he started writing his soon-to-be band’s debut album, While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets. Saporta eventually signed to Fall Out Boy’s bassist Pete Wentz’s label, Decaydance Records. Other members of Cobra Starship are guitarist Ryland Blackinton, bassist Alex Suarez, drummer Nate Novarro, and keytarist, Victoria Asher, all of whom provided backing vocals.


Here are some interesting facts about the band: 

• Another name Gabe thought of calling the band was Hot Child in the City. WeI think Cobra Starship sounds way cooler!
• Gabe Saporta: (on the inspiration for the band's name) I love, like, old vintage jackets and had this one that said Cobra on it from the Sylvester Stallone movie. And I had another one, it was like a total Michael Jackson jacket with the zippers and stuff from the '80s, and on the back it said Starship Disco, so I just put both of them together.
• The group released their debut album back in 2006. "Snakes on a Plane (Bring It)", is the debut single of the band from the soundtrack album Snakes on a Plane: The Album.

• Cobra Starship's debut CD, While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets, was released October 10, 2006. It reached #125 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. Gabe Saporta wrote most of the songs in the album.

• The song and video for Snakes On A Plane (Bring It) features William Beckett of The Academy Is . . ., Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, MajaIvarsson of The Sounds, and Gabe Saporta of Midtown. The video is a slight take-off of the movie, where the four singers are sneaking snakes onto a plane. To get away with this, Maja distracts one of the airport employees.

• Talk about a rock collaboration at its’ finest! The band's Decaydance Record label owner Pete Wentz has quick cameos in the videos for Snakes On A Plane (Bring It) and The City Is At War.

• While the video for Snakes On A Plane (Bring It) is like the movie Snakes on a Plane, the real meaning of the song is quite different, it is about the "snakes," finks, and sneaky people in the music industry.

• The band likes to put a comedic flair in their music. They created parodies of Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl called Hollaback Boy and of Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl called I Kissed A Boy.

• ¡Viva La Cobra!, their second album was released in late 2007.

• They played MTV Spring Break, Bamboozle East, West, in London, Tokyo and Canada.

• Their third albumwas released in August 11, 2009, Hot Mess. The lead single for this album, "Good Girls Go Bad", charted at number #2 in New Zealand.

• In late August, 2011, the band released their fourth studio album, Night Shades. The lead single, "You Make Me Feel..." featuring rapper Sabi, debuted at number #1 in New Zealand.

• Cobra Starship did two different versions of the video for Guilty Pleasure. The first is in the form of a home movie, while the second version is mocking an actual music video.

• Cobra Starship's song The City Is At War was used for promos for the show Top Chef: New York.

• Cobra Starship worked with VIP Party Boys in the song, Damn You Look Good And I'm Drunk (Scandalous), which is on their album ¡Viva La Cobra!.

• Did you know that their lead singer Gabe Saporta is a vegetarian? He is a strong member of Peta.

• Gabe Saporta: (for Action for Animals) How weird is it that we call certain animals pets and treat them like members of the family, and yet other animals we label food and suck the meat off their bones... we have so many food choices and options - so why make an animal suffer, and why take the life of another living thing, if I don't really need it in order to survive.

• Cobra Starship has a fake MTV reality show on YouTube. The band lives in a house and deals with their day to day drama.

• Cobra Starship's song, Pleasure Ryland, is named after Ryland Blackinton, the guitarist of the band.

• Ryland Blackinton has an alter-ego named Guy Ripley, a British journalist. He interviews the band but is most interested in Vicky-T. Ripley's catchphrase isDelicious.

• ¡Viva La Cobra! was the first album the whole band collaborated on and was released on October 23, 2007. It was written while they were on the 2007 Honda Civic Tour and produced by Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump. The album also reached #80 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.

• At a concert in Rhode Island on November 27, 2007, Saporta's favorite pair of jeans ripped at the crotch. In a later video on Cobra's website, Gabe requested that fans bring sewing kits to concerts so the jeans could be repaired, which they did. Hahaha Talk about supportive fans!

• Cobra Starship covered Lionel Richie's song Three Times a Lady for the reality show The Girls Next Door.

• Patrick Stump, producer of Cobra Starship's second album, made an appearance in the video Send My Love To TheDancefloor, I'll See You In Hell (Hey Mr. DJ).

• The band’s videos are Snakes On A Plane (Bring It), The Church Of Hot Addiction, Send My Love To The Dancefloor, I'll See You In Hell (Hey Mr. DJ), Guilty Pleasure: Home Movie, The City Is At War, Guilty Pleasure, Kiss My Sass: Home Movie, featuring Travis McCoy, Guilty Pleasure, and Good Girls Go Bad, featuring Leighton Meester.

• Alex Suarez and Ryland Blackinton, already have their own band called Ivy League.

• In 2006, a four-song CD demo was leaked onto the Internet with the tracks Bring It(the version that is not for "Snakes On A Plane"), Keep It Simple, Send My Love To The Dance Floor, and The Kids Are All F***ed Up.

• The song The Church Of Hot Addiction was featured on a commercial for TGI Fridays in 2007.

• In late 2006, Cobra Starship replaced Bloc Party for the second half of the Nothing Rhymes With Circus Tour, which featured headliner Panic! At The Disco.

How far will you go for your favorite band?

Your answer to that question wont matter.  I bet you a ticket for the next Incubus Live in Manila concert.  When you find yourself in the situation that question wont even cross your mind.

It is safe to say that Incubus is one of my top one favorite bands, along with Nirvana and The Beatles (both stand no chance of touring).  I grew up along with their sound.  When they were nu metal, I loved loud music.  When they were funk, I was tasting other kinds of music.  When they were singing about positivity I was trying to make myself.  Their songs are a huge part of my existential evolution.

I first heard about their If Not Now, When? tour from a friend. Without confirming it on their website, I am already set to attend.

The first and the major bump on the road is the road itself. Iloilo City is a fourty five minute plane ride away from Manila. I was jobless and of course pennyless too. We have to book a hotel room and we cant just starve in a city so overwhelmingly different from home. Despite all of these, the journey to the Incubus concert is definitely going to happen. Even Rapture has to be rescheduled to make way for us.

By the end of April we already have an iterinary. It took us three months of preparation. We even had to upgrade tickets since General Admission were already sold out just three weeks after availability.

My boring days are suddenly filled with excitement. Every time I hear an Incubus song, I imagine myself jumping along to the Araneta Colliseum crowd. I was seeing the sun that was invisible to others.

Two days before the concert, the weather was evil. We were expected to land in Manila along with a superstorm. Think fiction movies with plane slicing a dark sky, cruising past the lightning and dancing along to thunders. It is almost like suicide. But the airline thinks they are angels, so they rescheduled the flight, an hour before the concert.

We have to gamble and hope for the best. The adrenaline rush has killed my humanly fears. Plus, I have discovered the secret to flying during a bad weather, meditation.

It was a huge, “If Not Now, When?” moment.

We were able to land safely in Manila but we have to travel an hour to get to the venue. We took the fastest route, but halfway thru the ride the train went to a halt because of power outage. Our next option was a taxi ride, the problem is we dont know where the earest taxi bay is. We were running late, badly. I could wish on a star, but there was none on the building covered sky. I was already frustrated and ready to give up.

It was the most heart breaking taxi ride I have ever experienced. The what ifs in my mind were frustrating. It was like the universe conspired against us.

When we arrived at the Araneta Colliseum, the crowd was more of screaming than singing. I saw Brandon Boyd, Mike Einzinger, Ben Kenny, DJ Killmore and Jose Pasillas on the stage. Suddenly, the hardships evaporated. Brandon vowed and kneeled at the end, it was as if he knew what we just went through.

MCS Concert Review: Triple Threat - A1, Blue, and Jeff Timmons of 98 Degrees wow Pinoys!

Boy band fever swept over Araneta as pop vocal group Blue, UK band A1, and former 98 Degrees frontman Jeff Timmons took to the stage last February 28, 2012. The three acts converged as part of the The Greatest Hits Tour: Jeff Timmons, A1, and Blue Live In Manila, a show staged by topnotch concert promoter Wilbros Live. It’s been nearly a decade since their last visit and, judging from the smiles, cheers, and whoops from the crowd, Pinoys, particularly the kids who lived through the ‘90s, missed them dearly.

‘90s babies will always remember the sadness that enveloped them when 98 Degrees disbanded 8 years ago, and even if the entire group did not perform that night, the presence of founding member and lead vocalist Jeff Timmons made the concert worthwhile as he sang some of his band’s unforgettable hits.  During the show’s press conference Jeff declared he wasn’t pressured to sing alone because there was so much talent surrounding him. The singer serenaded the crowd with Invisible Man, Because If You, The Hardest Thing, and My Everything. When he sang the hit I Do (Cherish You) the handsome and charming singer grabbed a girl from the audience and started singing to her which, naturally, made the crowd grow wild. One of Jeff’s most applauded performances was when he was joined onstage by popular Pinoy band South Border as they sang the bands hit single, Rainbow.  The performance even made several journalists in the audience comment, “ Pinoy pride at its’ finest!”

After Jeff Timmons set, British-Norweigan group A1 churned out some of their well-loved hits. Scores of fans sang and danced to A1’s Same Old Brand New You, Ready Or Not, and Take On Me. The kilig meter was high in the air as the group sang One More Try, Heaven By Your Side, Walking In The Rain and One Last Song. Of course, the highlight of their performance was the monster hit Like A Rose which drove the crowd crazy! The band also did some cover songs like Black Eyed Peas I Got A Feeling, and Lady Gaga’s Poker Face.

However, Wilbros saved the best for last! When the announcer uttered the words “Simon, Lee, Duncan and Antony give it up for Blue!” the noise in Araneta was deafening.  Some people stepped over their seats in a mad rush to get to the front of the stage. Blue’s set opened with the song Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word. Looking incredibly dapper, the four men appeared wearing alternating gray suits and white polos. For the song Breathe Easy the handsome lads sang in front of their mikes. This was followed by another hit, You Make Me Wanna. For the song If You Come Back they executed several synchronized, snappy dance movements. All Rise was one of Blue’s most popular performances that night as the crowd snapped their fingers and threw their hands up in the air.

During If You Come Back, Lee, one of the group’s friendliest members, ran along the stage shouting, “What’s up people over here, what’s up?”  He segued to the next song, the upbeat Fly By by uttering the words, "I just want to say that, I'm sorry we can only be here for one night. You're gonna get us back? The way I see it, we coming here just to ‘fly by.'"

Blue’s tunes made the crowd get up and dance, but one moment during their set made the audience scream with giddiness. Before they ended their number the boys threw roses into the audience. Before he gave away his rose Duncan kissed the flower while uttering the words “Who’s gonna be my Valentine?”  There’s no doubt in our minds that, even for just one night, a lot of people would give an arm and a leg to do so!

Breaking the steady stream of songs was a comical moment courtesy of Simon and Lee. In the middle of their number, Simon wiped Lee’s face with a towel -then threw the towel into the audience! A lucky ABS-CBN employee caught the towel and told this writer she would never give it away. As expected, Blue ended their set with one of their biggest hits, One Love. As the group was singing, a screen set up onstage flashed photos of fans all over the world holding signs saying, Blue One Love.  It was the perfect ending to an evening filled with nostalgia, cheers, and loads of hearty fangirling! The only complaint this writer has was the limited number of songs Blue performed to. Blue sang around 8 songs while A1 sung 13- hopefully they have more songs if ever they do come back!
