Tears For Fears Fun Trivia(PART 1)

Posted on 04:47 by Unknown

MCS Exclusive: Tears For Fears Fun Trivia(PART 1)
Written by Jamie Ortega

Calling all ‘80s babies! We know how excited you all are for the spandex-filled, neon color flooded, Bermuda bag wearing madness that is sure to descend upon Araneta Coliseum on August 15, 2012, but before you unearth your bauls for your grooviest ‘80s outfit to wear to Tears For Fears Live In Manila here are some fun tidbits about the iconic English rock band to whet our dear MCS fans’ appetite.

·         Tears for Fears was formed in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. They met as teenagers in Somerset, southwest England. They started out as session musicians for the band Neon which was where they met future Tears For Fears drummer Many Elias. Orzabal and Smith eventually had their own band  called Graduate. Graduate released an album, Acting My Age which was popular in Spain and Switzerland but wasn’t able to do as well in the UK.

·         Do you think History Of Headaches is a good name for a band? That’s what Orzabal and Smith first called Tears For Fears. We wonder if they would have attained the same amount of success with that name

·         Tears For Fears was first signed to Phonogram Records, UK, in 1981 by Dave Bates. Their first single, Suffer The Childrenwas released in November 1981, followed by their second single, included in the first edition of Pale Shelter, released in March 1982. Unfortunately, neither of them was successful.

·         Looks like three’s a charm for Curtis and Orzabal- their third single Mad World reached no 3 in the UK in November 1982. Their first album, The Hurting, released in March 1983, was full of tunes inspired by Orzabal’s bitter childhood. Nearly all of their songs had references to emotional distress and primal scream therapy. The band’s success is proof that there is more than a little grain of truth to the adage, “misery loves company.” The Hurting finally tapped their hometown audience, reaching No 1 as well as platinum status in the UK. It also reached top 20 in other countries including Australia, Canada, Ireland and Italy

·         The band decided to have a slight change in musical direction for their second compilation, Songs From The Big Chair. Inspired by the book and television miniseries Sybil, a story of a woman with multiple personalities, the duo decided to give their alb um that name because they felt that each of the songs had their own distinct personality.

·         Songs From The Big Chair possessed more of a sophisticated sound and less of the band’s signature synth-pop feel.  Going off in that direction was apparently a good decision because the album became certified triple platinum in the UK and quadruple platinum in the US. It also had the most number of hit singles, fromShout, to Everybody Wants To Rule The World, to Head Over Heels

·         Head Over Heels peaked at 12 on the UK charts, 3 in the US, and 8 in Canada. Shout, on the other hand, peaked at 4 in the UK charts, 1 in the US, Australia, Canada, and Germany charts.  Everybody Wants To Rule The World did very well, too, hitting the second spot on both the UK and Irish charts as well as bagging the top spot in the US and Canadian charts. Yes, the boys from Somerset have definitely arrived!

·         Apart from their commercial success, the band also achieved critical success, bagging the Best British Single award, Best British Group, and Best British Album at the 1986 Brit Awards in London. They released their third album The Seeds Of Love In 1989. The album still kept their epic, signature sound in check for their third offering, although critics did notice a smattering of jazz, blues and The Beatles influences in all the songs. However, this was most evident in their mega-hit single, Sowing The Seeds Of Love. The second single from the album, Woman In Chains, became a top 40 hit in the UK, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden and the US. It also entered the UK album charts at 1, and made the top 10 in the US among other countries. Striking while the iron was hot, the band went on a Seeds Of Love world tour. They also released a book which chronicled their adventures and misadventures as a band. The book included rare photographs and exclusive insight from each of the members.

That’s all for now- we will be releasing part 2 very, very soon!

Catch Tears For Fears LIVE in Manila with special guest: Per Sorensen of Fra Lippo Lippi LIVE on August 10 & 11 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and on August 12, 2012 at the Waterfront Hotel Cebu. Tickets for Manila show are available at all Ticketnet outlets. Call 911-5555 or visit www.ticketnet.com.ph. Per Sorensen will be performing only in Manila. Nicki Minaj turns the SM Mall Of Asia Arena into one super concert party, says Manila reminds her of home

Title: Nicki Minaj turns the SM Mall Of Asia Arena into one super concert party, says Manila reminds her of home
Written by Jamie Ortega

As a music blogger,I am very fortunate to have been exposed to all types of music, but I must admit I will always have a soft spot for hip hop and RnB. What makes me like this particular genre so much? I love their swagger, their bling, their sass, but what gets me the most are their straightforward lyrics. RnB artists don’t usually resort to veiled metaphors to say how they feel, they just put their heart on their sleeves, translate it into a song, and make millions of people fall in love with it.

RnB superstar Nicki Minaj is exactly like that, plus she is one of the hottest names in the music industry-if you weren’t in on that fact let me help you right out of the rock you’ve been under: She is the only female solo artist to have seven singles on the Billboard 100 all at the same time, plus her hit single Super Bass has sold more than four million digital copies as of May 2012, making it one of the best-selling singles in the US.

You can probably imagine my excitement when I trooped to the SM Mall Of Asia Concert Arena last July 11, 2012. After two and a half hours travel time (thanks to the hellish traffic), I couldn’t wait to party the night away. And boy, was I glad I made the trip! Nicki turned everyone in the arena into little “Barbz” and “Kens,” (the rapper’s names for her fans) as she performed hit after hit. Unlike other concerts that usually take forever to start, it was a few minutes after 9 pm (yay!) when a curly-haired Nicki hit the stage. Wearing a black robe while holding a crystal –encrusted microphone, she kicked off the show with the single “Roman’s Revenge”. The crowd didn’t waste a single second as they started to dance while waving their glow sticks upon hearing the first beat.

Nicki removed her robe for her second number, “Did It On Em.” Beneath that robe was a neon polka-dotted green bolero, pink polka-dotted shorts, printed pants, and denim bustier. “I’m so honored to be in the Philippines for the first time it true that the Philippines has the more beautiful women in the world?” was one of her first spiels. The audience, of course, agreed enthusiastically!

Nicki decided to play with her back-up dancers for her third number, ”Moment For Life”, by  prancing and dancing around them. Before launching into her next number Nicki asked the crowd,  “Did you guys come here to party?” A question that was met with matching cheers and applause. The party atmosphere reached its’ peak with the songs “Turn Me On” and “Where Them Girls At”. As soon as the two songs were over Nicki immediately threw party favors to the crowd.

One of my favorite Nicki songs is “Fly”, an empowering anthem that features her and Rihanna. I was kind of disappointed, however, when Nicki wasn’t able to perform it live, instead a DJ situated onstage played the song while the rapper changed into a new outfit, a white sleeveless top, a white skirt and white boots.

Nicki quickly made up for that sad moment by performing another of my favorite songs next, her popular hit “Starships” with her “Barbie dream house”  set-up at the back- a diorama complete with a fireplace, window, a painting,  and book case (as a Barbie lover myself I wanted to jump right in!) Another awesome aspect of the concert was whenever Nicki talked about the inspiration behind each of her songs right before she performs them. For “Fire Burns” she revealed to the audience, “It was for a guy, I had my heart broken and I wanted to kill him.” Another tune, Save Me, was, according to Nicki, “For a boy whose heart I broke.”

I love good old audience participation, and this show had that, Nicki-style of course!  The rapper brought three girls to the stage and danced with them. Before the girls left the stage Nicki asked a photographer to take a picture of them- a gesture which I thought was very sweet.  What was also sweet was how Nicki showed Manila some love by saying, “Make some noise Philippines! Manila, I have to tell you, I will never forget you. You will be forever in my heart. This place reminds me so much of Trinidad. It’s absolutely beautiful.” (Nicki was born in Trinidad and Tobago, the rapper moved to New York City when she was only five years old.)
The rapper showed off her playful side towards the end of the show by pretending to leave the stage before performing her biggest hit to date, “Superbass”. Is there anything that I missed? Thank you and good night!” she joked. She, of course, sang it, while wearing her final outfit for the night, black pants over leggings dotted with animal prints and red boots.  Even if she wasn’t able to perform her encore set despite crazy shouts of “more,” from the audience, Nicki made up for it by going back onstage and showing up in a pink robe as she blew kisses to the audience. It was the perfect ending to a night filled with dancing, grooving, glitter, pink,  awesome tunes, laughter, and smiles- beautiful things that make life SUPER worthwhile.

SABRINA “ACOUSTIC LOVE NOTES” LAUNCH— A SUCCESS!

Posted on 23:54 by Unknown

Asia’s Acoustic Sweetheart SABRINA recently held a successful launch of her latest album “Acoustic Love Notes” at Megaworld Lifestyle Malls last July 13 at Eastwood Mall Open Park, July 14 at Venice Piazza at McKinley Hill and July 15 at Lucky Chinatown Mall. She was joined by special guests- popular radio and TV personality Joe D’Mango and up and coming singer Anj Sulit who are both featured in Sabrina’s album.

Sabrina displayed flair on her spiels and demonstrated how vocally gifted she was throughout the 3 day launch and was backed up by a four-piece band with back-up singers. The 12 song set includes her carrier single “Somewhere Down The Road”; all-time love hits like “The Art of Letting Go”, “Insensitive”, “Cry”, “Officially Missing You” and “One Last Cry” among others as well as her original songs “Sa Bawat Paghinga”, “One True Love”, “Over For Now But Not Forever” and “Again”—her duet with talented singer Anj Sulit. The show was made special by the presence of Mr. Joe D’Mango who, in between songs, gave his love advice on-stage like his famous program “Love Notes”. Though it rained during the first day of the launch at the Eastwood Mall Open Park, fans still trooped and bought albums of Sabrina. She was also able to attract and impressed new fans during her shows at Venice Piazza at McKinley Hill and Lucky Chinatown Mall. MyPhone raffled off brand new Q88 cellphones for album buyers.

Sabrina, whose last album “I Love Acoustic 4” just turned Double Platinum in Indonesia could not be any happier with the turn-out of her album launch.

“No words can express how happy I am for the success of the Acoustic Love Notes 3-part album launch,” Sabrina said.

Her “I Love Acoustic” series albums were also Multi-Platinum and Gold success in countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. Only Sabrina and Christian Bautista experienced this amount of success in Asia. “Acoustic Love Notes” is also released in Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia and will be released soon in Indonesia and Korea.

This event was presented by Megaworld Lifestyle Malls, Businessworld, Herword.com and MCA Music in cooperation with WOW Videoke, MyPhone with media partners: MYX, MYX Magazine, myxph.com, Manila Concert Scene, Chalk Magazine, Tambayan 101.9, Orange Magazine TV, Social Magzine and Juan Manila Express.

“Acoustic Love Notes” is now out under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines) at leading record stores nationwide and online via www.MyMusicStore.com.ph and iTunes. It is presented in cooperation with Wow Videoke, Businessworld and HerWord.com. To download Sabrina’s music on your mobile phones, text SABRINA to 3456. CONCERT REVIEW: Rock bands There for Tomorrow, Every Avenue and William Beckett Live smash up Manila

Posted on 01:29 by Unknown
Title: Rock bands There for Tomorrow, Every Avenue and William Beckett Live smash up Manila
Written by Jhoanne Mariano
Edited by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Magic Liwanag Photography

It was a very exciting and a memorable independence day for many fangirls and fanboys last 12th of June. Three bands/artists performed at the SM North EDSA Skydome – There for Tomorrow, Every Avenue and William Beckett. You’d most probably be expecting somewhat of a short performance from these guys mainly because they’d be sharing the same stage but all three performers did a full set of songs for each fan inside the venue. It was indeed one hell of a night!

The night started with “The Verge” of There for Tomorrow which made everybody rock along  to their tunes. It was then followed by “Pages,” “The Joyride,” and “Deathbed.” Everybody was still alive and kicking when they performed their 5th song, “Nowhere Blvd.” shadowed by “Backbone,” “Remember When,” “Hunt hunthunt” and their last performance “A Little Faster.” Having to perform 9 songs with such energy and enthusiasm for Manila was indeed quite memorable. All being well, they enjoyed performing in Manila as much as their fans enjoyed their act. The fanbase that they have here at present will surely grow bigger in the years to come.

A few minutes after the first band’s performance, Every Avenue played their first song, “Whatever Happened” followed by “Woodward,” “Story,” and “Where Were You.” The band’s been wanting to in Manila fo quite some time now and finally, that day hascome. Their 5th song was “No One but You,” then “Picture Perfect,” “Tie me Down,” and “Chasing the Night.” The fans were up front rocking along with their tunes, jumping up and down, enjoying every moment they had with the band. “There Tonight,” “Fall Apart,” and “Tell Me in a Wreck” were Every Avenue’s last three songs for the night. It seemed like the fans gave the band quite a warm welcome in Manila and showed appreciation for the band’s music with their loud howls and screams for Every Avenue.

The last act for that night was William Beckett, the former lead singer of The Academy Is, who seemed to be quite the highlight of the night. By the time that he showed up on stage, everyone was screaming his name and commenting on how hot he was. I personally think that he even made several new fansat that moment! He kicked off his performance with “Elephant (Damien Rice)” which showed how great of a solo artist he truly is. It was followed by “Attention,” “You and I against the World,” and “Compromising Me.” You could actually several fans crying tears of joy merely because of his presence. Crying or not, everyone was enjoying their night along with William Beckett. Everybody was rocking and singing along with every word of every song he performed.

“Drummer” was his 5th song followed by “Oh, Love!” and “You Never Give Up.” Every fan couldn’t stop screaming at some point that Beckett even had to ask the fans to settle down for his song to be heard. He was so down-to-earth that he didn’t just perform but he also talked to the fans during his act. Beckett is such a sweet guy – he reacts to almost every reaction he hears, he communicates with his fans, he looks deep in every fans eyes when he sings and he tries to do everything that would make his fans happy. His reactions are so cute you cant help but smile, or even cry, for some of his fans. His next song was “After the Last Midtown Show” followed by “Everything We Had” and “About a Girl.” He is not just a musician but he is also a bit of a joker! He was trying to fool his fans that that was his final song in several parts of the show.  But this time, he wasn’t joking around because his last song was “Great Night” and every fan did have a great night not just because of William Beckett but also because of There for Tomorrow and Every Avenue.
