Jayesslee Live In Manila: Feel Good Music At Its’ Finest

Jayesslee Live In Manila: Feel Good Music At Its’ Finest
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Kevin Pableo

Numbers don’t lie and with 58,675,118 Youtube views to their name; the dynamic duo of Jayeslee has definitely made their mark in the music industry. Those impressive credentials further piqued my curiosity as I made my way to the 3rdfloor of Robinsons Forum (Pioneer) last June 21, 2012 for the Philippine leg of their concert entitled Jayeslee Live In Manila. I saw a couple of their Youtube covers prior to their concert and was impressed by their musicality but as any concertgoer will tell you live performances are a whole new ballgame.

Before I go on here is a little Jayeslee catch-up session for those unfamiliar with the Yotube singing sensations: “Jayeslee,” is a combination of the names of twin sisters Janice and Sonia Lee who were born and raised in Sydney Australia to Korean parents.  They rose to fame in 2008 by singing song covers like Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars, Break Even by The Script, and Nobody Nobody by the Wondergirls.

As I heard the girls sing their hearts out I finally understood how they’ve managed to amass such a huge following. There was something so inspiring, so feel good, so refreshing about the quality of Janice and Sonia’s voices as they performed a total of 11 songs that night. One can really see how much passion the twins have with their craft as Sonia strummed away on her acoustic guitar and Janice worked magic on her piano. I’m sure most of you guys are familiar with this scenario: as you stroll around a public place you suddenly hear a horrible acoustic version of a popular upbeat song that really makes you shudder. It’s happened to me so many times I’ve become wary of acoustic versions of songs just because I feel like some songs are meant to be enjoyed ONLY in their original form.

Well, I am happy to tell you that wasn’t the case at the Jayeslee concert. Sonia and Janice  cleverly arranged their numbers, making them sound pleasurable and soothing to the ears. I loved how they kicked off the concert with their own version of Jetlag by Maroon 5, followed by a slew of highly popular tunes including I Wont Give Up by Jason Mraz, Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars, Breakeven by The Script, Payphone by Maroon 5, Switchfoot’s Dare You To Move, as well as their encore piece Price Tag by Jessie J.  Jayeslee also have the audience a taste of their original music, they performed  one of their original songs Failure In Disguise.

Kudos to Becca Music for choosing an intimate venue, as it fit well with Jayeslee’s brand of music. Unlike other concerts wherein the performers confine themselves to the run of the mill “Mabuhay Manila”  “thank you Manila” greetings I loved how Janice and Sonia kept the audience in stitches before and after each number as they shared funny anecdotes about different things- touring in various countries, movies they liked (they said they’re not that big of a fan of the movie Hunger Games because they found it too gory).

They also indulged in a little sisterly teasing, Sonia joked with the audience that she took pity on Janice, who was playing the tambourine at the start of the show, by buying her the tambourine that Janice is currently using because her sister couldn’t play any instrument.
Towards the middle of the concert two young girls, who were the winners of the Sing Like Jayeslee contest, were called up on stage to meet their idols. Janice and Sonia eagerly hugged and kissed the winners. That simple moment showed just how much Janice and Sonia love and appreciate their fans.

What touched as well me was when Janice and Sonia, who are proud Christians, shared their story with the audience. I thought it took a lot of courage for them to open their hearts to the concertgoers that night as they talked about their mother’s struggle with Cancer and how it has inspired the twins to share their music with the world. That simple story left me with an important message- to praise God in every moment. If their mother found it in her heart to worship and praise God while battling Cancer what excuse do we have? Those thoughts ran through my mind as the concert came to an end and the house lights flickered on. Jayeslee Live In Manila left me with a high I couldn’t easily shake off. A high brought upon by God and two twins named Janice and Sonia Lee.

SABRINA RELEASES “ACOUSTIC LOVE NOTES”

Posted on 06:40 by Unknown

Asia’s Acoustic Sweetheart Sabrina joins forces with famous radio/ TV personality Joe D’Mango for an album that will touch the hearts of many—“Acoustic Love Notes”. Inspired by his popular and long-time show “Love Notes”, Sabrina interprets classic love songs acoustic style coupled with Joe D’Mango’s love messages.

The song line-up includes the carrier single “Somewhere Down The Road” originally by Barry Manilow, Brian McKnight’s “One Last Cry”, “Cry” by Mandy Moore, Christian Bautista’s “The Way You Look At Me”, “Can You Help Me” by Usher, Mikaila’s “The Art of Letting Go”, “I Don’t Want You To Go” by Lani Hall, Brandy’s “Have You Ever”, “Someone Like You” by Adele, Tamia’s “Officially Missing You”, “If Love Is Blind” by Tiffany, Jann Arden’s “Insensitive” and “Without Me” by Clair Marlo.

For the first time in any Sabrina album, it features 4 original songs, 2 of which she composed herself—“One True Love” and “Over For Now But Not Forever”.  Her first Filipino track “Sa Bawat Paghinga” was written by award-winning composer Toto Sorioso and the other original track “Again” is a duet with up and coming singer Anj Sulit.

“This project with Mr. Joe D’Mango actually started with my guesting at his show where I sung my all-time favorite love song ‘Somewhere Down The Road’. From there, my record label, MCA Music thought of having us working together and the rest is history. It was truly an honor working with him having been a fan of his show through the years,” Sabrina said.

“It’s been a while since I came out with a Lovenotes compilation album. Now, it gives me great pleasure to be part of a soulful collaboration on a new album with Asia’s Acoustic Sweetheart , Sabrina.  This endearing album contains  some of the most memorable songs that captured  the hearts of  many who  have  loved and failed and many who have loved and have been loved in return,” as Joe D’Mango wrote from the album intro.

Sabrina has been making waves in Asia since the release of her “I Love Acoustic” series which is currently on its fourth volume. The albums have been multi-platinum success in Indonesia and certified Gold in Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. Among Filipino singers, only two have officially break in the Southeast Asian market—Christian Bautista and Sabrina.

Be it songs of heartbreak, love lost, letting go or falling in love again, it is here in “Acoustic Love Notes” where you will hear a different Sabrina.

“Acoustic Love Notes” will be out this June 18 under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines) at leading record stores nationwide and online via www.MyMusicStore.com.ph and is presented in cooperation with Wow Videoke, Businessworld and HerWord.com. To download Sabrina’s music on your mobile phones, text SABRINA to 3456. NKOTBSB in Manila Concert Review: A Slice of Boyband Heaven

Posted on 04:50 by Unknown

NKOTBSB in ManilaConcert Review: A Slice of Boyband Heaven
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Magic Liwanag Photography

I am very much a 90s girl. I listen to 90’s music at work, I watch Dawsons Creek during my free time, and I was, and still am, a huge fan of 90s boybands. I don’t know why I love the 90s so much, probably because I was in high school during the ‘90s, and like most highschool kids my world revolved around my teen idols. So you can imagine my glee when I found out that super groups New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys would be having a concert in Manila. I forced myself to not watch any of their previous tour performances online just so I could feel the magic on June3, 2012 at SM Mall Of Asia when NKOTBSB Live In Manila came around. And boy, was it a good decision!

The night kicked off with a decent enough front act, the boy band VFort. I loved their original song Princesa, the song was so incredibly upbeat and peppy, with a sound reminiscent of another OPM group, ‘80s boy band Neocolours. I also enjoyed VFort’s
Katy Perry medley which made a good number of people stand up and dance. So, good job guys! Before I go on with my review can I just say how much I loved this concert because it was full of surprises. The first surprise was when Donnie Wahlberg of New Kids On The Block introduced the other two front acts, Roscoe Umali and Prince Of R and B Jay-R- who are both Pinoys! In the dog-eat-dog world called the music industry isn’t it nice to see an American popstar like Donnie support Pinoy talent? Props to Mr. Wahlberg for doing that.

Whoever thought of having these two groups tour together should be given an award because, judging by the insanely spectacular show the boys gave, the idea was absolutely brilliant. Kudos should also be given to Ovation for having a stage that gave enough room for the boys to walk around and interact with their fans with. (For those who weren’t there the stage was horizontal in length with a runway at the front.)  As soon as the lights dimmed for the third time, fans rushed to the sides of the runway and in front of the main stage to have a closer look at their idols. The boyband extravaganza (or marriage of boybands as some reporters put it,) was kicked off with an interesting mash-up of Singleby the Backstreet Boys and Coldplay’s Viva La Vida as the boys gave it their all wearing leather outfits and black top hats.

What followed then was an interchange of performances which gave fans of the two groups ample time to scream, shout, and basically go ballistic for the boybands. NKOTBSB performed a total of 29 songs plus three encore songs making the show worth every penny. New Kids On The Block came in first with a rendition of Summetime followed by BSB’s The Call. As the show progressed, it was pretty obvious that NKOTB showed more skin. Jordan Knight was clad in a white, tight sleeveless top, Donnie Wahlberg paraded down the stage with his insane six-pack, need we say more?

However, the Backstreet Boys made up for it by giving undeniably energetic, heart-pumping, kilig-inducing performances. I loved how they would go to the side of the stage, wave, cheer, and give out autographed pictures to the fans. The Call was followed by NKOTB’s Dirty Dancing and BSB’s Get Down mashed up with LMFAO’s Party Rock Shuffle. As expected, NKOTB’s hit songs garnered the most applause like You Got It (The Right Stuff) which had the boys lining the runway, singing into their mike stands while dancing in unison.

Remember how I mentioned I was a kid of the ‘90s? Nick Carter was a huge part of that. I remember collecting BOP, Teen Beat and Tiger Beat magazines with
his face on them. Which was why the  next number, BSB’s Larger Than Life, will forever be etched in my memory as a tattooed and muscled Nick Carter in a sleeveless black shirt, together with the rest of the Backstreet Boys, caroused down the runway. If at the start of the show NKOTB and BSB took turns performing, towards the middle of the concert each of the boy bands enjoyed a longer time in the spotlight with New Kids On The Block going first. NKOTB kicked off the “longer rounds” with a medley of love songs starting with Didn’t I (Blow Your Mind This Time) and Valentine Girls as Jordan Knight’s flawless falsetto reverberated throughout the arena. The boys, looking unbelievably dapper in suits and berets, succeeded in making the swoon meter at the venue go a million times higher. Valentine Girl was followed by more NKOTB tunes,
If You Go Away and Please Don’t Go Girl.

The Backstreet Boys didn’t disappoint either as they serenaded the audience with  Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely, 10,000 Promises, I’ll Never Break Your Heart, Drowning and Incomplete while wearing crisp white suits. A boy band concert wouldn’t be a boyband concert without the usual “sing to the girls onstage portion” and the Backstreet Boys did exactly that as they each serenaded a girl with Nick overtly flirting
the girl he picked (yes insert jealous font here!).

Not to be outdone, NKOTB took the crowd’s energy a notch higher as they delighted their fans with hit tunes Step By Step, Cover Girl, My Favorite Girl, Games and Tonight. During Tonight the boys took time out to go down into the crowd, shake hands, kiss and hug lucky fans. Touched by the response of their Pinoy fans Donnie shared this message, "Manila, mahal ko kayo. Mahal na mahal kita," while Joey McIntyre expressed how lucky they were to finish the tour in the Philippines. “"This tour is so special. We're finishing it in the Philippines. We're so blessed to have such good memories here," McIntyre said.

The boys indeed saved the best for last as Backstreet Boys took center stage once more performing some of their biggest hits like Shape Of My Heart, As Long As You Love Me, All I Have To Give, We’ve Got It Goin On and Quit Playing Games (With My Heart) with the crowd gleefully singing along. Another great aspect of the concert was how it allowed each member of the group to shine, like Jordan Knight who followed up the last Backstreet Boys medley with I’ll Be Loving You Forever, impressing everyone with his goosebump-inducing falsetto.

It was obvious how close the two groups have become, judging by their farewell messages to each other toward the end of the concert. It was the final stop in a long tour spanning several countries and they showed how special they are to each other by giving each other sweet and touching goodbye messages.” In behalf of Backstreet Boys, I would like to thank the five selfless guys we have shared the stage in the last year and a half. Without NKOTB, this would not be possible. Thank you, fellows," shared AJ McClean. Wahlberg in turn, shared, "I'm going to miss all of the Backstreet Boys -- they're great partners and even better friends. I want to thank the BSB fans for joining the New Kids fans. This marriage of two boy bands -- in the 15 years, we're gonna have boy band babies and they're going to come here in Manila," Wahlberg said. The boys fittingly ended the show with NKOTBSB’s latest single Don’t Turn Out The Lights.

Just before we thought we saw the end of one of the best shows this writer’s ever seen,  the Backstreet Boys and New Kids On The Block gave one last hurrah with an encore medley of BSB’s Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) and  NKOTB’s Hanging Tough mixed in with Queen’s We Will Rock You. As this writer was fighting tears in her eyes, the two groups, wearing jackets with Philippines printed on the back, joined together for a touching group hug onstage with confetti falling on everyone. The entire concert was a dream comes true in so many aspects-having two groups I love onstage, performing in the flesh, making fans like me happy. Indeed, it was a night full of memories boy band fans will forever keep in their hearts.

Concert Review: We The Kings Make Manila Go Wild!

Posted on 19:19 by Unknown

We The Kings Make Manila Go Wild!
Written by Jhoanne Mariano and Jamie Ortega
Photos by Jep Señir(Photo Pit Manila)

After performing at the Ayala Live event last year, power pop band We The Kings returned to the Philippines on May 28, 2012 to headline their own show at Hard Rock Café in Makati. There’s no denying the popularity of the band in the country, the words We The Kings and Travis Clark often become trending topics on social networking site Twitter. True enough, the energy of the fans (of all ages, we might add) was palpable the night of the concert.

One can tell how much fans like a band when they are in sync with the performers despite technical problems, which was exactly what happened when front act December Avenue set foot on stage performing a slew of tunes that effectively warmed up the audience. Thefans warnly welcomed the band and rocked along to their tunes despite several technical glitches.

By the time the front act was done, the crowd became even more eager for the main act to start. Roars and screams began to emanate from every corner of Hard Rock Café by the time We The Kings set foot on stage. All of the fans were undeniably pumped and ready for the night to be filled with the band’s undoubtedly fun-filled repertoire. The band kicked the show off with the tune “She Takes Me High,” “Skyway Avenue” and “What You Do To Me” as the venue began to burst with enthusiasm and ecstasy; the crowd going into a frenzy as they started jumping and singing the lyrics back to them.

Soon it was one song after the other, What You Do To Me, Kiss Me Last, Friday Is Forever, and Every Single Dollar, songs chock full of anthemic guitar riffs, supersized melodies, and bleeding heart lyrics that are all part of the band’s signature sound. The crowd’s energy didnt’ falter one bit when the band sang “All Again for You” followed by “Secret Valentine.” Performing “We’ll Be A Dream” without Demi Lovato gave the band a chance to “make beautiful music,” with homegrown talent Juliann Savard,  who is the vocalist of her own band, Save Me Hollywood.
Clark then decided to take it a notch lower by performing the first half of “Heaven Can Wait” with an acoustic guitar together with  bassist  Charles Trippy, a feat that was eventually finished off by the entire band. Another fun highlight of the night was when drummer Danny Duncan showed off his rapping abilities, a skill which delighted the crowd to no end. This was followed by the band’s latest single Say You Like Me.

Some people may call it cheesy or scripted, but for this writer she finds it touching when foreign acts learn our native language. These artists perform at more than a hundred countries so when they make an effort to learn Tagalog, well, it’s delightful. Travis did just that, showing off his newly acquired Tagalog skills by saying words such as “Astig kayo!” and “Mahal namin kayo!” which was then followed by more cheering from the fans and an on-the-spot jam session with the crowd chanting “Astig, astig, astig!”as the band free styled  with Travis even rapping! The lead vocalist also said other things that, made their Filipino fans adore him even more statements like , “Bands come and go … but we really feel like this is our second home”.

The band performed “The Middle”, cover from Jimmy Eat World and lastly, their biggest hit to date, the ever famous“Check Yes Juliet” for the finale. The crowd gave it their all during the finale song – jumping and singing their hearts out as if the past few hours of dancing and rocking out didn’ do anything to their energy. Hopefully, the band comes back to their “second home” very soon, the rush that the band and the crowd felt during We The Kings’ first performance here in Manila several months ago was nothing compared to what was felt  that night’s show. Special thanks to Dayly Entertainment and Built By Sonic for making this event possible!
