Pinoys give Craig David a good kind of insomnia

Posted on 02:19 by Unknown

Title: Pinoys give Craig David a good kind of insomnia  WRITTEN BY JAMIE ORTEGAPHOTO BY Kevin Pableo for Manila Concert Scene

Ask a bunch of people what makes them happy and you’re sure to get different answers. People have various versions of happiness. Money, friends, or family are just some of them, but for the people at Coca-Cola seeing the ecstatic looks on faces of their fans as they sip the sweet, fizzy, refreshing drink is what gives them pure joy.

In celebration if its’ 100th anniversary in the Philippines and as a way to thank their consumers for making them happy for all these years, Coca-Cola staged a huge concert at the SM Mall Of Asia Concert Grounds last March 23, 2012. Pinoys were treated to a grand musical spectacle which started at 3pm and ended at 4 am the next day as some of the country’s biggest local bands and artists including Gary Valencaino, Sarah Geronimo, Rico Blanco, Gloc-9 and Callalily plus international superstar Craig David performed their hearts out!

Everyone at Manila Concert Scene thought that it would be Taio Cruz performing but when we heard he was replaced by Craig David we were beyond ourselves with excitement! We love all his songs from Whats Your Flavor, Unbelievable, to the epic Insomnia. Right before the concert we were lucky enough to see the Brit superstar up close and personal at the press conference held hours before the concert at the Manila Diamond Hotel hosted by MYX VJ Chino Lui Pio. Read all about it here:

(included in the photo beside Craig is Ms. Anubha Sahasrabuddhe Marketing Director of Coke Philippines)

MYX VJ CHINO : What do you remember from your stay here?
Craig David: What I remember the show was great, and seeing the fans which was overwhelming because they showed so much support. Just going for a run in the streets was pretty cool, people would look and say, is that Craig David? And they weren’t sure, you get to see parts of Manila that way because usually in the car you see buildings here and there.

MYX VJ CHINO: Nobody chased you around?
Craig David: Trust me nobody would be catching me.

Question: How do you find the Filipino audience and what brings Craig David happiness?
Craig David: When you come so far and you see such embrace of the songs, as an artist it is amazing how I can carry the song but how people from different countries react to the same song is also amazing. What makes me happy is people chowing on pasta (press people were eating pasta at that  time), what makes me happy is how I can create something from nothing and see how people react. It is the most beautiful thing and it makes me travel to so many beautiful things around the world and this place I wouldn’t have seen if it wasn’t for the beauty of this music, and so I would say that is one of the things that definitely makes me happy.

Question: What can people expect from your performance tonight?
Craig David: A few cool singles here and there, I guess it would be wrong if I didn’t do Insomnia (laughs) from out here and the two places I have been to here and Russia, two places and that song connects beyond belief further than I can imagine. One of the stewardesses asked for a photo but one of the things she pulled out from her iPhone was Insomnia just in case I forgot the lyrics, I love it, will have fun tonight that’s all.

Question: Who is your musical inspiration?
Craig David: Michael Jackson is just a name I am locked into. There is just a lot of people that inspire me but Michael Jackson is one of the key people in music because he musically crossed all genres of people, he isn’t just a great entertainer he also has a unique voice. And the songs he wrote I just think are classic, they sound the same now as when he released his albums. And not many of those artists that we have, and there are great artists in the world but not many are you can say is a true superstar.

Question: You’ve been tweeting about working out, what triggered that? And what would cause you to have insomnia?
Craig David: As a kid growing up I was quite overweight and I always said I would take it to the other extreme. Ive always kind of like yo-yo-ed but the move to Miami was big for me because it was very much about look there. Your tops are off half of the time and I was tired listening to myself saying let’s train for a minute because you still want to drink you still want to eat while expecting great results. So I was like let me lock in for a period of time see if I can get results. That’s why there are a lot of tweets saying the abs are out today, I think if you work really hard and you see results you should be proud of it
When you go to the gym go with an attitude like, have the attitude of when you are with your girl and you close the doors in your bedroom, the stuff you get down to, when you go to the gym you should have the same attitude and you will see results.

Craig David: Probably a song that is not finished will be what keeps me up.

Question: If there is one song you would dedicate to the Filipino people after Coke’s 100 years what would that be?
Craig David: The song would be Insomnia, it is a song the Filipino people owned. It is amazing a brand known all around the world which everybody obviously knows about, I love the fact that if you really know your Coke you will rock it in a glass bottle. And not because I am here, but the Coke I have on my fridge at home is the glass bottle of Coca-Cola.

Question: Can you enumerate 3 Unbelievable songs that happened in your life?
Craig David: The first time hearing one of my songs on the radio was pretty amazing, knowing hundreds upon hundreds of people are listening to your songs at the same moment, first time I announced an arena tour at Wembley Arena and just to see my name up there, travelling, I have gone to incredible places, met some amazing places, met some amazing people, some not so amazing people, and the music has allowed me to open my eyes to the world and I try and tell people to just travel. If you can take a year off of your life and travel it is one of the most important things otherwise you become close-minded, so many diversity in cultures, and food, I think those things are what you do to me.

Question: If you weren’t Craig David what would you be doing?
Craig David: I would be kicking back with a bottle of Coke and DJ-ing which is something I love. And it was kind of between DJ-ing and picking up the microphone and writing songs, if that happened {and I pursued a career as  a DJ } I wouldn’t be giving the kind of performance I would be doing right now but I would still be a DJ. I still think there is a big void in the world of DJs who can pick up the mike and either sing, harmonize and rap, and still DJ. That for me is something I still see I mean, hey, you can still bring music and rock tracks{as a DJ} but picking up the microphone and performing {as a DJ} that is bringing the music to a whole new and different level.

Question: Are you single?
Craig David: I am single, when you reach your 30’s you want it to be relationship status you want it to be like you are in one. You want to be tweeting, I am with my fiancé now, but right now STILL SINGLE! What I will check out is the show to ride the plane and go back to Miami, I have never done that that quickly. People think it is all glamorous but you go there, do 22 hours on the plane, spend a few hours in the country, do 22 hours back on the plane it isn’t glam, but the actual performance makes it worth it. I will be coming back to promote my new album and I hope by the end of this year I have a finished album myself

Question: What is your message to your Filipino fans who supported you throughout the years?
Craig David: Obviously a big thank you and just continue to support it doesn’t matter if it is out, it’s coming out every year or if there is a period of time in between my albums there seems to be the same kind of love whenever I come back here so a massive thank you. I am hyped for the show tonight beyond belief! It would be cool to be a part of some local acts who will be performing tonight.

Back with Brian McKnight Live in Manila Concert Review

Posted on 21:48 by Unknown

Title: Back with Brian McKnight
Written by Jhoanne Mariano
Edited by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Kevin Pableo

Top R and B singer Brian McKnight charmed Pinoys last March 16 with a one-night concert at the Big Dome.  Brian enthralled the crowd with his hit tunes including One Last Cry and Back At One with special guests Angeline Quinto and R and B princess Kyla.

It was around 9 o’clock in the evening when the angelic voice of Angeline Quinto filled the venue. She serenaded the audience with My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion and Bukas Na Lang Kita Mamahalin by Ms. Lani Misalucha. Her fans, aptly called the Angeliners, started screaming their love for her as soon as she set foot onstage. Angeline was eventually joined by popular comedian and Showtime mainstays Vice Ganda and dancer Jhong Hilario.

With the audience enchanted and still in stitches from Angeline, Vhong, and Jhong’s numbers, Brian McKnight made a grand entrance befitting someone of his stature. He descended from the stairs in the middle of the stage and, in the midst of warm applause from the crowd, kicked off the night with the tunes Shoulda Beenfollowed by Gimme Yo Love.  Like a true performer Brian proved he can not only sing, the Grammy-Award winning artist showed off killer moves on the dance floor including a sexy “booty dance” with his lead guitarist and bassist.

After the second song, he greeted the crowd by shouting “Manila!” before launching into his third song, All Night Long. The audience can definitely tell if a performer is merely going through the motions, however, judging from his performance, McKnight wasn’t like that. Passion oozed from every pore in his body.

The R and B singer didn’t just leave the audience in awe, he also kept them laughing with his charming quips. A fun moment during the concert which exhibited just that was when, during his fourth song, Only One 4 Me, he struck a sexy pose before uttering the lines, “I can be the man…that you need.”
Before he went on to his fifth song, Another You, the singer interacted with the crowd once more.He thanked Manila for being with him that night. Ever the jokester, the singer noticed a poster held by a fan that stood near the stage.  Brian apologized for being a bit old, because he could not read everything written on the poster. Although he probably could see the “I love you part” because he warmly replied “I love you back” which made the giddy fan swoon even harder and rush back to her seat. We’re betting that outpouring of love inspired him a lot because Bryan began to look for the taken and single ladies in the crowd. Ever the charmer he pronounced to all the females in the audience, “I will be your man tonight.”

During his sixth song the singer had the audience in the palm of his hand. He asked the crowd to sway along to his sixth song “ Find Myself” while uttering the words “Everybody move this way, and now that way, and now this way, and now that way…”

Bryan also exhibited his flair for musical instruments with an acoustic guitar solo right before launching into the tune Read My Mind. During his performance of the classic Jeffrey Osbourne hit On The Wings Of Love the singer said it was a song which, back in the day, would really get him the girls!
On the other hand his next performance, a cover of Journey’s Open Arms, was memorable in an entirely different way. The singer remembered singing the song during his highschool dance with a girl who had bad breath!

Singers who can play a multitude of instruments are a rare breed. Bryan proved he belonged to this elite group with a compelling piano performance of Overjoyed by Stevie Wonder, followed by Rock With You by Michael Jackson.

One of the most thrilling moments that night was a duet with Angeline Quinto. The two sang the Vanessa Williams hit Love Is,their voices soaring to the ends of Araneta. An amusing moment in between their duet was when the Star Power champ quipped, “Mr Brian… I’m sorry I’m not fluent in English but, you know, I can sing.” “Yes you can!” Bryan reassured.

The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree. Bryan is living proof of this adage when he sang Everytime You Go Away and “6, 8, 12” with his two sons Niko and Brian Jr. They also performed the duet “Marry Your Daughter” with Brian accompanying his sons on the piano. What a talented family!
After that night, there was no doubt in anyone’s mind why Bryan speaks so highly of his sons. After their duet, Brian Jr. ran around the patron area singing while Niko played the guitar for their L.O.V.E.number .More than just their inherent talent, you can truly see the blood of Brian McKnight running through their veins brimming with the passion and skills they’ve undoubtedly inherited from their father.

Bryan showed Manila some love by bringing up another Pinay entertainer, none other than R and B chanteuse Kyla! .They performed the duet How Do You Keep the Music Playing by James Ingram and Patti Austin.

The R and B singer closed the night with one of his biggest hits, Back @One. Nearly everyone in the audience sang along as he performed the tune that has become a staple in many a variety show and karaoke machine across the country.

“I’m gonna leave you with this tonight,” uttered Brian before he performed Fall 5.0 which served as his last number for the night. Not every foreign act is able to show his undue admiration for Filipino talent  while showcasing his stellar songwriting and singing skills, for that Brian McKnight will always and forever be one class act.

. Special thanks to MJM Productions Inc., Nica Serrano and Nixon Sy for making this event possible!

A Smashing Good Time - Smash Project 2012 Concert Review

Posted on 04:49 by Unknown
Title: A Smashing Good Time - Smash Project 2012 Concert Review
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Ed Clinton Go

Party philes, die-hard rakistas, acoustic mavens, pop fans, and love struck teens-they wouldn’t be caught dead together. But you know what they say about music- it has the power to unite even the most diverse people. Last March 8, 2012 music lovers from all walks of life met and had a SMASHING good time at Dayly Entertainment’s Smash Project. The crowd bore witness to a concert of epic proportions as Typecast, Urbandub, Chicosci,  One Buck Short, Slapshock, The Cab, Chris Carraba, Cobra Starship and The Used performed their hearts out, leaving the audience, thrilled, exhilarated, and yes, more than a little infatuated.

Front acts local bands Urbandub, Chicosci, and Slapshock served as the night’s diesel as they warmed up the audience with some of their most popular songs. Typecast, often referred to by fans as the Dashboard Confessional of the Philippines, kicked off the 5-hour show with their famous emo-rock hit Boston Drama.  Not to be outdone was Malaysian group One Buck Short whose lively rendition of Last Friday Night was met with cheers and head-bopping.

They may have called themselves “dorks” during the press conference held the day before at the Edsa Shangri-la Hotel, but they looked nothing like it as the Las Vegas band pop-rock band The Cab composed of front man Alex Marshall, Alex De Leon, Joey Thunder, David Briggs and Frank Sidoris entertained the crowd (and made many a fan girl scream) with songs “Take My Hand,” “Bad,” “I’ll Run,” “Bounce” and “La La”.

The Cab fans will be delighted to know how special the Philippines is to the band- De Leon in particular. “My godfather is Filipino and I learned so much from him; like, a lot about respect and appreciation,” the front man revealed during the press conference. “We’ve had so many fans tweet us over the years trying to get us promoted here, and I look forward to just going out after the shows and meeting them.” Expect a collaboration with Justin Timberlake very soon as De Leon dished out some JT loving also during the press conference. “I specifically look up to him because he kind of does everything. He’s not a one-trick pony,” gushed De Leon.

Everyone here at Manila Concert Scene would like to dole out 1,000 pogi points to the boys of the Cab for two specific things: one for looking for a member of the Manila Concert Scene staff and giving her a hug after the press conference when this writer told them that her co-worker is a big fan. Another kilig-inducing backstage moment was when a 17 year-old Cab fan by the name of Patricia fainted during the second half of the band’s set. When the band heard about the incident De Leon serenaded Patricia and her friends backstage with a snippet of the song “I’ll Run”. Of course one of Patricia’s friends caught the whole thing on tape and uploaded it on Youtube. We are sure Patricia will remember that for the rest of her life!

The mood at Araneta Coliseum shifted from pop rocking to party rocking when Cobra Starship hit the stage. The fan girls, boys (and everyone in between) gyrated, jumped, danced, and sweated to the sytnthpop band’s songs Hot Mess, You Make Me Feel, Guilty Pleasure and The City Is At War. Even if he was absent during the CD signing and show’s meet and greet frontman and creator Gabe Saporta made up for his absence by giving the fans a little, well, fan service. In the middle of his performance Gabe’s pants tore near the crotch area exposing neat pair of blue boxer briefs. Saporta never ran out of jokes and quips during the entire set, proclaiming at one instance that if he was the President of the Philippines he would have everyone’s pants tear every night. Well, if everyone in the country looked like Saporta why not? Right before leaving the stage the goofy and sexy frontman jumped into the crowd doling out kisses to the girls which we are sure, like his pants, made many girls heads explode.

You could really see the change in the crowd when Dashboard Confessional frontman Chris Carraba hit the stage. People from all sections started to stand, cheer, and whoop. Couples began to hold hands while girls had wistful smiles on their faces. Sans the rest of his band Carraba serenaded the crowd with his swoon-worthy voice as he belted out his gut-wrenching and utterly romantic anthems like Belle of the Boulevard, Vindicated, and Stolen.

During the press conference The Used’s Bert McCracken kept on saying “I love you” to the members of the media. The Utah American rock band lead vocalist proved just how much he loved the Filipinos as he, along with his band, Dan Whitesides, Jeph Howard, and Quin Allman delivered a truly head-banging performance that night. Fans formed rock signs with their hands as the band electrified the atmosphere with the tunes The Taste Of Ink, A Box Full Of Sharp Projects and All That I’ve Got. We were also delighted when we saw the Philippine flag in front of the band’s drum set. It really is more fun in the Phbilippines!

What would be a rock concert be like without a mosh pit? Bert made sure that would not be missing as he ably supervised the forming of the pit prompting the group composed mostly of boys (and very brave girls) to chest bump, fist bump, and bump whatever body parts they could- all in the name of rock insanity.

International rock festivals are scarce in this country. As the Smash Project has so ably proven you can be a rakista, a pop fiend, or a party animal but when it all comes down to it- everyone in the Philippines loves and appreciates music. We hope that there will be more festivals like the Smash Project- a lively convergence of hearts and minds from all different walks of life.May music unite our hearts and minds in more ways than one.

Press Release: Lifehouse Live in Manila 2012

Posted on 22:54 by Unknown

For those who missed the American rock band who gave us the hits “Hanging by a Moment”, “You and Me’, and  “First Time” perform last July 2008, now is your chance to see them again live for an evening of extraordinary musical pleasure. Lifehouse Live in Manila on May 26, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Lifehouse’s leap to mainstream success started with the release of their single “Hanging by a Moment” from their album “No Name Face”. The song became an instant hit and became the “Most Played Song in 2001”. Written by Jason Wade, the song catapulted the band into commercial recognition. This was followed by “You and Me” from their self-titled album “Lifehouse” and “Whatever It Takes” from “Who We Are”.

A lot of Lifehouse’s songs were featured in TV series and motion pictures in the United States. “Everything” was used in the series Smallville, “All in All” in Scrubs, “Good Enough” was played over the end credits of the Disney film “The Wild”.

The band’s ability to evoke emotions and effectively translates feelings through a song was what gave them the massive fan base that they have now. Tracks like “Sick Cycle Carousel”, “Everything”, “Breathing”, “First Time”, “You and Me” and more, were played over and over again by loyal listeners worldwide. These songs captured the hearts of millions and left them wanting more.

Catch another exquisite and remarkable performance and fall in love once again with Lifehouse.  Lifehouse Live in Manila on May 26, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Tickets will be available on sale starting March 14, 2012 at all Ticketnet outlets or call 911-5555 for more information. Posted on 18:59 by Unknown

Title: CATCH UP ON COBRA STARSHIP
BY JHO MARIANO
EDITED BY JAMIE ORTEGA

Smash Project presents four amazing bands all in one night– Dashboard Confessional, The Cab, The Used and Cobra Starship! Don’t miss this smashing event this coming 8th of March at the Smart Araneta Coliseum; gates open at 6pm. Buy your tickets now at TicketNet (911-5555). Ticket prices are as follows: Patron (PT 101 & 103 - Standing) - P4240; Patron Seated (Reserved Seating) - P4240; Lower Box (Reserved Seating) - P3710; Upper Box A (Reserved Seating) - P2650; Upper Box B (Free Seating) - P1060; General Admission (Free Seating) - P530.

Cobra Starship is an American pop punk/synthpop band which was founded in Arizona by Gabe Saporta back in 2005. At that time, Gab wanted to create a band with a melodic style of music that is heavily influenced by synthpop and hip hop. After his trip to Arizona, he started writing his soon-to-be band’s debut album, While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets. Saporta eventually signed to Fall Out Boy’s bassist Pete Wentz’s label, Decaydance Records. Other members of Cobra Starship are guitarist Ryland Blackinton, bassist Alex Suarez, drummer Nate Novarro, and keytarist, Victoria Asher, all of whom provided backing vocals.

Here are some interesting facts about the band:

• Another name Gabe thought of calling the band was Hot Child in the City. WeI think Cobra Starship sounds way cooler!
• Gabe Saporta: (on the inspiration for the band's name) I love, like, old vintage jackets and had this one that said Cobra on it from the Sylvester Stallone movie. And I had another one, it was like a total Michael Jackson jacket with the zippers and stuff from the '80s, and on the back it said Starship Disco, so I just put both of them together.
• The group released their debut album back in 2006. "Snakes on a Plane (Bring It)", is the debut single of the band from the soundtrack album Snakes on a Plane: The Album.
• Cobra Starship's debut CD, While the City Sleeps, We Rule the Streets, was released October 10, 2006. It reached #125 on the Billboard Hot 200 chart. Gabe Saporta wrote most of the songs in the album.
• The song and video for Snakes On A Plane (Bring It) features William Beckett of The Academy Is . . ., Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes, MajaIvarsson of The Sounds, and Gabe Saporta of Midtown. The video is a slight take-off of the movie, where the four singers are sneaking snakes onto a plane. To get away with this, Maja distracts one of the airport employees.
• Talk about a rock collaboration at its’ finest! The band's Decaydance Record label owner Pete Wentz has quick cameos in the videos for Snakes On A Plane (Bring It) and The City Is At War.
• While the video for Snakes On A Plane (Bring It) is like the movie Snakes on a Plane, the real meaning of the song is quite different, it is about the "snakes," finks, and sneaky people in the music industry.
• The band likes to put a comedic flair in their music. They created parodies of Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl called Hollaback Boy and of Katy Perry's I Kissed A Girl called I Kissed A Boy.

• ¡Viva La Cobra!, their second album was released in late 2007.
• They played MTV Spring Break, Bamboozle East, West, in London, Tokyo and Canada.
• Their third albumwas released in August 11, 2009, Hot Mess. The lead single for this album, "Good Girls Go Bad", charted at number #2 in New Zealand.
• In late August, 2011, the band released their fourth studio album, Night Shades. The lead single, "You Make Me Feel..." featuring rapper Sabi, debuted at number #1 in New Zealand.
• Cobra Starship did two different versions of the video for Guilty Pleasure. The first is in the form of a home movie, while the second version is mocking an actual music video.
• Cobra Starship's song The City Is At War was used for promos for the show Top Chef: New York.
• Cobra Starship worked with VIP Party Boys in the song, Damn You Look Good And I'm Drunk (Scandalous), which is on their album ¡Viva La Cobra!.
• Did you know that their lead singer Gabe Saporta is a vegetarian? He is a strong member of Peta.
• Gabe Saporta: (for Action for Animals) How weird is it that we call certain animals pets and treat them like members of the family, and yet other animals we label food and suck the meat off their bones... we have so many food choices and options - so why make an animal suffer, and why take the life of another living thing, if I don't really need it in order to survive.
• Cobra Starship has a fake MTV reality show on YouTube. The band lives in a house and deals with their day to day drama.
• Cobra Starship's song, Pleasure Ryland, is named after Ryland Blackinton, the guitarist of the band.
• Ryland Blackinton has an alter-ego named Guy Ripley, a British journalist. He interviews the band but is most interested in Vicky-T. Ripley's catchphrase isDelicious.
• ¡Viva La Cobra! was the first album the whole band collaborated on and was released on October 23, 2007. It was written while they were on the 2007 Honda Civic Tour and produced by Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump. The album also reached #80 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart.
• At a concert in Rhode Island on November 27, 2007, Saporta's favorite pair of jeans ripped at the crotch. In a later video on Cobra's website, Gabe requested that fans bring sewing kits to concerts so the jeans could be repaired, which they did. Hahaha Talk about supportive fans!
• Cobra Starship covered Lionel Richie's song Three Times a Lady for the reality show The Girls Next Door.
• Patrick Stump, producer of Cobra Starship's second album, made an appearance in the video Send My Love To TheDancefloor, I'll See You In Hell (Hey Mr. DJ).

• The band’s videos are Snakes On A Plane (Bring It), The Church Of Hot Addiction, Send My Love To The Dancefloor, I'll See You In Hell (Hey Mr. DJ), Guilty Pleasure: Home Movie, The City Is At War, Guilty Pleasure, Kiss My Sass: Home Movie, featuring Travis McCoy, Guilty Pleasure, and Good Girls Go Bad, featuring Leighton Meester.
• Alex Suarez and Ryland Blackinton, already have their own band called Ivy League.
• In 2006, a four-song CD demo was leaked onto the Internet with the tracks Bring It(the version that is not for "Snakes On A Plane"), Keep It Simple, Send My Love To The Dance Floor, and The Kids Are All F***ed Up.
• The song The Church Of Hot Addiction was featured on a commercial for TGI Fridays in 2007.
• In late 2006, Cobra Starship replaced Bloc Party for the second half of the Nothing Rhymes With Circus Tour, which featured headliner Panic! At The Disco.
