Four Things We Learned From Bloc Party's Matt Tong

Posted on 04:10 by Unknown

Title: Four Things We Learned From Bloc Party's Matt Tong
Written by Niche Dumlao
Matt Tong, drummer extraordinaire for seminal English band Bloc Party, is somewhere in Dublin. Sitting in a hotel room with a phone attached to him…answering eager questions from the string of Philippine press scheduled that day – or the world over even. In between the busy schedule of the band, one cannot help but admire the dedication the boys have put into keeping the party alive. After all, this band has churned out 4 albums, myriads of singles and videos plus a gamut of remixes spanning more than a  decade. And among those, are memorable songs such as “Banquet”, “The Prayer”, “I Still Remember”, “Tulips”, “Kettling”, and my personal favorite – “The Once and Future King”.

Now, Matt Tong, drummer extraordinaire for seminal English band Bloc Party, shall soon find himself in ever colorful Manila for the band’s first gig in the country. And with the flutter of excitement has garnered, we’re pretty sure that many are more than ready to embrace the band’s brand of music live. Gearing themselves to bask in tracks from “Silent Alarm” (of which Matt describes as a “their defining album”) to their latest release, “Four” (of which Matt describes as “aggression, heartfelt, unedited…”)

So before the four lads from London reach our shores, we took some time to be part of Matt’s busy schedule and settle down for a little chat. From where we learned 4 awesome bits about Bloc Party and about Matt himself.

FOUR reignited them as a band
Matt shares that the album gave them a fresher perspective after coming out of the long hiatus since their 2008 release, “Intimacy”. During the building of the record, Matt shares that FOUR brought them back to the studio and made them realize the value of being in the band. And more importantly, the value of playing music. And coming together again was a decent thing to do, especially for their fans. However, he rebuts that the break did not really influence the sound of the record but its influence was harped on to their desire to be together again.

He reads fan blogs and artists reviews
When asked how much Matt values fan reviews in blogs and magazine reviews, he quips that he doesn’t really value either. Yet he feels that it’s important to heed fan blogs and journalistic articles. “Professional reviews versus fan reviews has merits for different reasons”, he says. “It’s good to read about their perspectives especially as an artist but it’s a dangerous trap. If you spent too much time thinking about what others would say, you sorta second guess yourself. So in the end, it pays to be objective when approaching these.”

On how he wants to be remembered
Being one fourth of Bloc Party, it’s undeniable that the band has already stamped a lot of musical legacies here and there.  So when asked how he wanted to be remembered, he shares “I’d like [Bloc Party] to be remembered as a band that did things differently and [we] broke the mold of the indie rock [genre].” And as an individual, he wants to be known as someone “passionate”.

He can’t wait for the Manila show
As the band’s first time to be in this part of the world, Matt cites that he’s always been motivated to play to new audiences worldwide.  “I’m excited to see if people would show up and I’m excited to see their reaction”.  He adds that despite numerous shows, he always finds it a challenge to deliver the best show possible for the fans. But beyond that, Matt shares another reason why he’s stoked to play in Manila – and that’s to try the local cuisine. He muses that “Filipino food isn’t really represented that well overseas that’s why I wanna try it”.

So don’t disappoint the man. Show up at the Bloc Party show on March 22 at the World Trade Center. And together we behold the pulsating talent of the band – from vocalist Kele Okereke, guitarist Russell Lissack, bassist Gordon Moakes, and of course Matt Tong, drummer extraordinaire for seminal English band Bloc Party.

MCS Exclusive: Colton Dixon excited to visit the country anew for concert with Jessica Sanchez

Posted on 22:15 by Unknown

Title: Colton Dixon excited to visit the country anew for concert with Jessica Sanchez
Written by Jamie Ortega

No plans for Valentines?  Fall in love all over again as our country’s pride, American Idol Season 11 runner-up Jessica Sanchez, serenades her kababayans with some of the most romantic love songs ever written at her first solo concert on February 14 2013 at the Big Dome. Joining Jessica for that special night is her fellow Season 11 finalist  Christian rocker and fan favorite Colton Dixon.

“Beyond shocking,” were the words that escaped from Steven Tyler’s mouth when Colton Dixon was eliminated from the 11th season of the hit reality show American Idol. But instead of letting it bring him down, as the remaining contestants battled it out for the Season 11 finals, the 21 year old singer/songwriter dived right into his music, collaborating on 13 new songs in 13 days, the start of a songwriting process that ultimately netted him 22 potential tracks for his debut album.

With his good looks and impressive vocal chops, it came as no surprise when 19/EMI-CMG/Sparrow Records got wind of his talent and signed him under their label. The changes that the premiere record label took subsequently paid off when You Are, Dixon’s debut single from his debut album A Messenger, hit number one on Billboard’s Christian Digital Songs and Christian/Gospel Digital Songs charts. The instant success of this track instantaneously catapulted Colton to the big leagues,  making him and Jennifer Hudson the only 7TH place finalists in Idol history to reach #1 on a Billboard chart.

In line with this, Manila Concert Scene got to chat with the charismatic rocker through an exclusive phone interview organized by MCA Music. Read on as Colton talks about his songwriting process for The Messenger, his favorite memories of the Philippines, his fascination with Batman, and his friendship with Jessica.

Tell me about your songwriting process for A Messenger, do you work on the lyrics first, the melody, how does it go?
It depends, I think I come up with the music first, it’s really easier for me than lyrics, but it was just a few months ago in California when I wrote a song on paper first. Sometimes I get the song title or idea first, sometimes I just play on the piano and then I put lyrics to it, I haven’t quite figured out the formula yet.

You said that your album is something fresh for Christian music different style that hasn’t been heard in Christian music, can you elaborate on that?
Yeah! There are a lot of bands who make beautiful music like Switchfoot, but I think my record is really edgy especially for Christian music, and it’s a lot edgy than what people are used to listening to, there are issues that I deal with like suicide, I deal with heavy topics but at the same time it is also a very positive and uplifting album. I just want to encourage those who are going through hard times, and  I hope that people love the record.
You will be coming here on the 14th for a show with Jessica Sanchez how do you describe her as a musician, are you guys friends?
Jessica and I are very close friends, we haven’t had a lot of time to talk recently because we are so busy recording, but she is a sweetheart. I am so honored and thankful to go back to Philippines.
What are some of your favorite memories of the Philippines?
When we had a mall appearance, it was so much fun and they were so crazy and chaotic and the fans were so excited, everyone is really in love with music in the Philippines, so it was really cool to see that. I am looking forward to try a lot of things there, the beautiful food, a lot of things from your culture, I want to be a big part of that.
Girls go crazy over you, with your heartthrob status have you ever considered acting or hosting?
It depends on the role but I definitely would give acting a go, I did theater in high school and I had a lot of fun with that.
Everyone knows that you are big fan of Batman, why?
I think I just grew up on Batman that’s why I never grew out of it, I even wore a Batman-inspired pair of Converse on the American Idol tour. He is one of the few superheroes who is really just a normal guy, he is really smart, he fights crime, anyone could be Batman and I was really attracted to that element.  I’m just still kinda of a nerd and I never grew out of it.
Aside from music, what do you do in your spare time?
My spare time is usually during the holidays, i love spending time with my friends and my family. I love bowling, it’s really random actually but I love to do it. I also love watching movies, or doing anything as long as it is fun.
Can you invite everyone to your concert on the 14th?
To everyone in the Philippines, this is Colton Dixon inviting you to the Big Dome on Valentine’s Day February 14th come out and have fun with us,  I hope to see everyone there, let’s have a good time.

Special thanks to MCA MUSIC.

The Jabbawockeez to bring Vegas to Manila via hit show M.U.S.I.C

The Jabbawockeez to bring Vegas to Manila via hit show M.U.S.I.C
Written by Jamie Ortega
Manila will get a dose of Vegas this weekend as the internationally renowned dance group  Jabbawockeez brings their hit Las Vegas show M.US.I.C to different Ayala Malls.

Entitled “Jabbawockeez Present M.U.S.I.C (Muse-I-See),” the 90-minute show, directed by choreographers Napoleon and Tabitha, is full of exhilarating dance moves that will surely captivate mall goers of all sizes and ages. Apart from their stupendous stunts and awesome dance moves, another trademark of the America’s Best Dance Crew Season 8 Champs are the plain white mask and gloves that they wear on stage to guide the attention away from individual identities, towards a unified group.

A concerted effort to deviate from the norm, coupled with the group’s God-given talent, dazzling creativity, hard work and determination, are just some of the Jabbawockeez’ outstanding qualities that contributed to their quick rise to fame following their America’s Best Dance Crew win .A huge part of that success are also the group’s noteworthy achievements like performing at the 2008 BET Awards with Ne-yo, and the2011 Daytime Emmy Awards with Wayne Brady. And just last August 2012, the Jabbawockeez added another feather to their cap by being honored for their contribution to the dance community with the Hip Hop International Living Legend of Hip Hop Award.

But that’s not all- the Jabbawockeez recently broke records as well by being the first dance crew to headline their own show, M.U.S.I.C.  in Las Vegas. Now they’re set to captivate their fans here as they bring M.U.S.I.C to the Philippines for the first time. In line with that, Manila Concert Scene caught up with the boys, together with America’s Best Dance Crew Season 2 Winners Super Crew, for a roundtable interview at the Makati Shangri-la hotel.  Check out the interview here:

How does it feel like to open up for New Kids On The Block back in 2009?
Jeff Phi Nguyen: Opening up for those artists, wow, those guys are like family to us now. We really had a great rapport with Donnie Wahlberg, they spent a lot of time with us. And when the tour was over, we partied it up a little bit with them, till this day we still kind of hang with them from time to time.

How do you guys see yourselves after 5 to 10 years?
Chris “Cristyle” Gatdula: After winning the show in 2008 we’ve just been evolving, and we’ve become closer as brothers as well.  I hope within the next 10 years as we get older we continue to be even closer, to keep doing shows, to keep doing what we love.
Kid Rainen: The show that you will see in Ayala Malls, M.U.S.I.C, will be performed at the Luxor Hotel Casino in Vegas for six more years and we are very excited about that, people will get to see a totally different in our very own theater and we are so excited about that

What are some of your fondest memories of Manila?
Chris: Some of our fondest memories was our last trip to Boracay, it was such an amazing trip, we saw the beautiful island, ive always wanted to go there as a kid and everyones been telling me to go back
Kevin Brewer: For me the experiences we have in the Philippines have been just amazing. Everytime we come back we feel the love that our fans show us here. We always feel humbled and we love coming back here. We make it a point to give back the love we have and we always show that and do that.

How about for the guys of Super Crew?
Do-Knock: We are excited to be here as well and we are excited to make new memories since it is our first time being here, its just a treat for us to perform for the Filipino fans and with the Jabbawockeez

You guys work for a living as dancers, which many consider a luxury. Do you ever get nervous when you perform?
Jeff: Yes, we just recently performed in Rio together on a stage and I think we were all tense, we perform so many times and we get  to do the same thing a repetitive thing, but there are also those shows where you get, like these shows that we are going to do out here, I know that we are going to be excited and nervous and  get the butterflies because that is what we live for, those butterflies that make us perform in the first place.

Kb- I wanted to add we personally, weve been doing it for such a long time, I am more excited than nervous, with what we are going to bring. I personally don’t have space for nervousness, before it used to be “uuugh” but now im just gonna show up and give the people what theyre expecting. I know that’s where my energy lies right now.

Chris- I think we are all in different places than we were before, and to think that weve gotten so much better, weve all been training and we’ve all been performing so much, I mean especially those Vegas show, what the Philppines is going to see, just an amazing show, it will be executed well.
Kb-Pack in your tsinelas!

Because we want to give our dear Manila Concert Scene fans only the best and the latest in the concert scene, here is our EXCLUSIVE interview with the handsome and friendly pop superstar:

Did you like any specific tracks in New Breed?
I liked all the tracks to be honest because I produced the album. They are all very dear to me like my children, maybe Know Your Name, I like I Got Your Back, Know Your Name, it’s the title track and I thought a lot of  people would like it. And I Got Your Back because it’s a powerful song with a positive message.

Pinoys seem to love you, what can you say about that?
Oh, yeah, yeah, it’s crazy that I don’t come to the Philippines that often but they treat me in a warm way and I really appreciate it.

Why did you name your New Breed?
The reason why I named it New Breed, there’s no other album like it, I am a New Breed of artist and it is kind of hard to find a musician who can give a variety of music hiphop, R and B,  there is a lot of versatility in the album.

What is it about the album that you think Filipinas would like or enjoy listening to?
I don’t know about a specific country that would like the album, but whoever likes hip hop and R and B will like the album.

What was your experience like producing the album?
Oh, definitely, I didn’t know I was producing the album, I was just talking to people, emailing people, putting the album together, I learned a lot from it. I got better at rapping, singing, recording, better at putting together an album.

Do you know of any Filipino singers or musicians?
Yeah definitely Charice I just know a lot of music guys like JR Aquino, I know a lot of Filipino choreographers. Ive got a couple of Filipino friends, yes.

Where do you get the inspiration for your songs?
Some of it is like imagination, I try to create stories, some of it is other people’s experiences.

What qualities are you looking for in a potential girlfriend?
I just like a cool, chill girl, sense of humor, natural, with a nice smile.

Catch Jay Park LIVE at the Venice Piazza in McKinley tonight and at Lucky Chinatown Mall on May 6, 2012. Special thanks to MCA Music and Megaworld Lifestyle Malls
