OneRepublic performs in Manila this November 2013

Posted on 23:09 by Unknown
OneRepublic first achieved success as the number one unsigned act on MySpace Music. Their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud, released in 2007 includes the singles “Stop and Stare,” “Say (All I Need)” and the smash hit “Apologize” which ranks in the Top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100’s All-Time Top Songs list. A remix version of “Apologize” was also featured on Timbaland’s album released the same year. In 2008, they toured with Maroon 5 and even appeared on the American Idol finale, alongside David Archuleta.
The band’s second album, Waking Up, was released in 2009 and had four official singles, “All the Right Moves,” “Secrets,” “Marchin’ On,” and “Good Life.” The singles and other songs from the album have been widely featured and even used as promotional material for US TV shows and movies. “Secrets,” was used in the movie The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and TV shows Lostand Pretty Little Liars; “Good Life” was featured in the trailers for the movies One Day and Eat Pray Love.

OneRepublic’s latest album, Native, was released in March 2013 and became the band’s highest charting album to date. In creating their third full-length album, the band traveled to Paris, Greece, London, New York, Seattle, and Vancouver to write, record, and immerse themselves in elevating and expanding their already-sweeping sound. Also working at lead singer/songwriter/ keyboardist and GRAMMY® winner Ryan Tedder’s own Patriot Studios in Denver, OneRepublic redefined their approach to rhythm and infused their high-powered rock-pop hybrid with elements of electronic music, gospel, blues, and folk.

“There’s this crazy juxtaposition happening on the album,” says Tedder, whose bandmates include Zach Filkins (guitar), Drew Brown (guitar), Brent Kutzle (bass, cello), and Eddie Fisher (drums). “On one hand we tiptoed into the EDM world and brought in that energy, drive, and tempo, but on the other it’s got a lot of acoustic guitar and a much more organic feel than what we’ve done before.” For help in achieving that supercharged but soulful sound, OneRepublic collaborated with leading-edge producers like Philippe Zdar (the French composer known for his work with artists like Phoenix, The Beastie Boys, Cat Power, and Depeche Mode), Jeff Bhasker (Kanye west, Jay Z, the Rolling Stones,  Fun.) and Benny Blanco (Maroon 5, Rihanna, Gym Class Heroes).  Nativealso features some guest artists, such as Adele backup singer Bobbie Gordon, as well as Grecian harpist HarpEri, (recruited while OneRepublic was recording at the famed Black Rock Studios in Santorini).

Though the album’s built on deftly crafted beats and intricately textured arrangements, a spirit of simplicity stands at the heart of Native. “Our goal is always to put out the most honest record possible. So even though we’re very much inspired by EDM, I also love what’s happening with folk music today. It’s cool to see that the world doesn’t always need 300 beats per minute, that just an acoustic guitar and a voice can connect with people,” says Tedder, who also points out that “the swampy, stompy feel of Southern Delta blues” played a major role in helping OneRepublic to instill Native with a certain raw energy. OneRepublic also looked to the folk and blues movements in teasing out the emotional content of Native. “These new songs are about mortality, love, hope, desperation, faith, failure—the whole gamut of human emotion,” Tedder says. “We try to give the lyrics a certain gravity without being preachy, and make the kind of music that music that connects with people not just at a party or a club on Saturday night.”

Concert Roundup: What we loved about The Script concert

Concert Roundup: What we loved about The Script concert
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Kevin Pableo

The Irish alternative rock band The Script returned to Manila last March 31, 2013 for a concert at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The  group, composed of Danny O’Donoghue in vocals, Mark Sheeran in guitars and Glen Power on the drums,  performed to a sold-out crowd once again. They entertained the crowd for one and a half hours with songs from their self-titled debut album The Script, second offering, Science & Faith, and third studio album #3. It was an unforgettable show indeed, from the selection of songs that the band performed, to their connection with the audience, to the fun and crazy antics that ensued onstage. Here is our selection of the top 10 best moments that night. What are yours?

1)    Danny mingling with the audience. It’s hard to count the exact number of times Danny went down into the crowd; the first time was We Cry and then the writer just kind of lost track after that. What she does remember is that he appeared in the lower box section near the end of the show which was totally unexpected.  There was also a time when he sat on the side of the stage to be closer to the crowd

2)    The audience interaction. The crowd present was a lively mix of yuppies, students, girls and guys. They sang along to the 13 songs and three encore songs. As the band was performing the song We Cry, Danny gave the mike to the fans in the crowd so they could sing along- which they did! It made this writer remember what he said during the roundtable interview, that Asian audiences are more in pitch than their European counterparts.

3)    The stories The Script shared before performing each song. It made the fans feel closer to the band. Before they performed If You Could See Me Now, Danny shared how difficult it was for them to write and record it because it talked about the death of Danny’s father and Mark Sheeran’s parents. I’m sure that performance made a people who’ve lost someone special in their life think about that person.

4)    Danny bringing the message of Nothing to life by talking to someone’s ex on the phone. Before they began the song, the vocalist asked someone in the audience to drunk dial an ex girlfriend or boyfriend. He then snatched someone’s phone and sang Nothing to the person on the line. It would have been cooler if he actually spoke to the person instead of singing to them, but then again it could have turned into a therapy session which would have been pretty inappropriate

5)     A drink-off onstage. The band has been quite open about how much they love liquor. In fact, liquor is often mentioned in their songs.  During the concert, Mark and Glen brought their love of booze to the next level by actually having a drink-off onstage! “You don’t give a free beer to Irish people and I hear it’s the same with Filipinos,” Danny joked. He even spilled the liquor on his head and threw the bottle he drank from into the audience!

6)  Manny Pacquiao + bunnies = A PRETTY AWESOME COMBINATION. The band got into the Easter spirit by having people in bunny outfits prance about onstage. Even if their presence was totally unannounced, the appearance of a couple of Easter Bunnies onstage was pretty hilarious. The band wished everyone a Happy Easter then put on boxing gloves and pretended to box the furry mascots. Danny then turned his back to the audience to show off the Team Pacquiao jacket he was wearing. It’s always nice when foreign acts pay tribute to the heroes of the land they perform in.

7)    The band’s versatility and musical range. Danny showed his musical prowess by playing the guitar then the keyboards. Glen played both the drums and the guitar. He even jammed with Danny while performing the song I’m Yours

8)    They know when to take it up a notch and when to bring it down. During the roundtable interview a few hours before, Glen said that the audience willbe on an emotional rollercoaster and it did feel that way. The concert began with the gritty Good Ol’ Days, slowed down with the heartbreak anthem Six Degrees Of Separation, then the band took the energy back up with the Hall Of Fame encore.
Photo from The Script's official Twitter page
9)    The band took a photo of the audience. They showed how special the night was to them by taking a picture of Smart Araneta Coliseum which they uploaded to their Twitter account. They also tweeted about how much they enjoyed performing in the Philippines by posting this message on their Twitter account alongside a photo of Mark and a skeleton wearing a hat: “Manila it’s time to say goodbye! We loved our stay! Peace and love” We’re not sure what the skeleton meant, but the message was sweet enough.

10)          The incredible encore. Judging by their setlist, the last song of the night was supposed to be You Wont Feel and Hall Of Fame. But because they loved the vibe they were getting from the crowd they performed the first song Good Ol  Days again! According to a tweet from Glen posted on their account it was the first time they did it. That was how much they loved the show and clearly, the feeling was mutual!

Concert Review: Foster The People Pumps Up Manila!

Posted on 17:55 by Unknown
Title: Foster The People Pumps Up Manila!
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Ferdie Arquero, Kris Rocha and Magic Liwanag Photography

I must admit, when I heard that Indie-pop act Foster The People was going to Manila for a one-night show, I had my doubts. The three man band made up of vocalist/songwriter/guitarist/vocalist Mark Foster, bassist Cubbie Fink, and drummer Mark Pontious only had one hit to their name, the infectious and upbeat Pumped Up Kicks, which, in my mind, was certainly not enough to fill up the Araneta Coliseum.

Boy, was I wrong! (And pleasantly surprised, I might add). As soon as I entered the Big Dome last October 8, 2012 I saw a large crowd full of fans crazy about the group’s signature electronica stylings, heavy hooks, and infectious rhythms. Hipsters and non-hipsters alike (although I must say there were a lot of hipsters), immediately showed their love for the group by standing on their seats as early as the band’s first song, the sleek and heavy hooked Miss You. After listening to their first round of tunes, I slowly began to understand their appeal, why people were instantly drawn to the indie electronic outfit’s hypnotic disco pop sound, –in a landscape full of forgettable auto-tune manufactured hits, the band’s diverse musical stylings ranging from foot stomping arcade game-sounding anthems to wailing ballads, all covered in reverb-heavy synths, is a breath of fresh air indeed!
By the time the second song, Life On The Nickel, came on, the Big Dome was starting to look like a lit up boulevard as thousands of people threw up their glow sticks in the air and began to scream. But more than just the crowd’s reaction to the band, props must indeed be given to the three lads as well because they really did all they could to give their audience a great show. Mark Foster lived up to the many slashes in his name by running from instrument to instrument- clad in a white jacket the good-looking vocalist started Life On The Nickel by playing on the piano then immediately ran to the drums playing across Mark Pontious, before going to the mike stand then back to the piano.

One could really see the passion and heart the group had for their music as the third song and fourth songs, Houdini and Broken Jaw, came on. It wasn’t any kind of passion mind you; it was an infectious kind of passion that made the crowd start to sing the song’s lyrics in unison. Pleased by the reaction of the audience, front man Foster began to head bang while playing the piano before stretching his arms sideways and  doing a little dance on stage. Even if you aren’t a hard-core fan, the intense and fun-filled presence of the group on stage makes it worth every penny.

Let’s face it- I don’t know about you but I think I am a little sick and tired of the usual “Mahal kita, salamat,” greetings from foreign acts. Good thing Mark Foster went a little further by sharing in between songs a connection the front man had to our country. Foster revealed that his grandfather, who served in the military, lived in Manila in the ‘40s while his dad who was a hippie, stayed in Manila for two years back in the ‘70s. “My dad told me he watched a band play here back in 1973,” Foster shared to the audience. “I’m older than my dad when he was here.”
He was also amused at the fact that the Big Dome was where boxer Muhammad Ali fought Joe Frazier during the historic Thrilla In Manila. “You guys got history. You guys got passion,” he marveled. “You guys have Manny Pacquiao, the best boxer since Ali,” he added.

After performing Broken Jaw, the boys launched into a crowd favorite, Would Do Anything For You, followed by Waste and Love. Aside from the music, I also liked the play of lights that lit the stage, from purple to red, to yellow; they made the show even more vibrant and appealing to watch. Among all of the songs, I think I enjoyed Call It What You Want the most because it was where Foster played around with the audience. He sang the “woooohoooo,” part of the song and made the audience do the same, an act that made him reveal a conversation he had with Maroon 5 guitarist James Valentine. According to Valentine, the best thing he remembers about Manila was that everyone had perfect pitch- a comment which elicited even more cheers and screams from the crowd. He ended the song by jumping around, dancing onstage, playing on the keyboards and drums again. I was seriously getting tired just watching the whole group perform onstage!

Call It What You Want was followed by Don’t Stop (Color On TheWalls), Warrant, and Helena Beat. After a total of 11 songs the group called it a night by performing two more songs for their encore, Ruby and their biggest hit to date, Pumped Up Kicks. To end the night, Foster jumped into the audience shaking hands and mingling with people as two white inflatable balloons rose up onstage. Needlessly to say, everyone walked out of Araneta Coliseum pumped and incredibly happy. As if the entire show wasn’t enough to make any non-convert morph into a Foster The People fan, did you know that they didn’t have a sound check before the show? That’s how effortlessly good they are!

Celebrities spotted in the audience: Anne Curtis, Khalil Ramos, John James Uy

James Morrison to Serenade the Big Dome Tonight

Posted on 00:49 by Unknown

Title: James Morrison to Serenade the Big Dome Tonight
Written and Photos by Ava Sharra Sumortin

James Morrison is known for his soulful songs and the honesty of his lyrics and music. The artist behind the hits “You Give Me Something”, “The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore”, “Broken Strings” (featuring Nelly Furtado), “I Won’t Let You Go”, and “Up” (featuring Jessie J) will perform live in Manila today October 8. Yesterday, he indulged the members of the media for an intimate press conference.

He was first asked about his arrival in Manila. He described it as a “strange experience” because it was hectic. He was welcomed with camera crews and police escorts. I guess Filipinos always go the extra mile when it comes to being hospitable.

Since Manila is not exactly a stone’s throw away from England, his hometown, he is pleased to be in our shores. Prior to traveling to our country, he said he had no idea about the Philippines. So how does he feel that his music touches people halfway across the world? He said, “It feels like I’m doing my job… like I’m bridging the gap between people around the world.”
He is oftentimes dubbed as a “white soul” singer. I feel that it’s not only because of his music, but also with the impression that you get from him. According to him, though, “I try not to think about color, I try to think about the feeling… Call it what you want, as long as you like it.”

His musical influences span generations. He grew up listening to songs from the early ‘60s to early ‘70s. He didn’t mind the artists and the singers as long as they are “good songs with passion and soul.” Now that he is one of the world’s most charismatic artists, he makes use of the upbringing that he had to create his latest album, “The Awakening”. He describes the album as a process of him “waking up as a person or artist.”

He is also known for his heartfelt songwriting skills. He said that he writes songs “for people who can’t express themselves.” That particular answer made an impact on me personally. We all feel we can relate to songs one way or another and that makes us attached to a song. That’s what makes songs unforgettable. What’s the best atmosphere for him to create a song? He said writing songs is much easier with problems. That explains all the James Morrison songs that seem to tug at our heartstrings. In addition to that, thinks he was born sad. “I think we are born sad. You just find your way to be happy,” he said. I couldn’t agree more.

Since he started being a singer when he was young, he was asked about his advice to other artists that want to make their songs be heard. He advised that musicians should not always try to please people by staying true to themselves and their music.
Tonight, James Morrison will hold his concert in Manila for the first time and fans should expect “some good old-fashioned rock and roll experience.” For sure, that is something that he will give.
The Awakening World Tour: James Morrison Live in Manila is presented by Midas Promotions.

JAMES MORRISON Live! In Manila: The Awakening World Tour

Posted on 07:32 by Unknown

A special evening is in store for Filipinos as the English singer-songwriter and guitarist JAMES MORRISON performs in Manila on October 9, 2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

JAMES MORRISON achieved worldwide success in 2006 with the release of his debut single “You Give Me Something.” His first album, Undiscovered under MCA Music (Universal Music Philippines), debuted at the top of the UK Album Chart and sold millions of copies, making him the biggest-selling British male solo artist in 2006. The album, which also has the hit singles “Wonderful World,” and “The Pieces Don’t Fit Anymore” won him a BRIT Award in 2007 for Best British Male Solo Artist.

JAMES MORRISON is currently touring to promote his album, The Awakening, released in September 2011 also under MCA Music. As the title of his third and by far best album suggests, The Awakening is the sound of an artist coming of age. In his personal life, Morrison has become a father, while losing his own father after the latter’s long battle with alcoholism and depression. At the same time, Morrison, 26, has matured as a singer, songwriter and musician, enabling him to channel all of that emotion into his most accomplished collection of songs yet. “My first two albums felt like practice shots,” he says, “and now I’ve graduated. In many ways this feels like my first proper album.” Fortunately, The Awakening has turned out to be the album that Morrison always had the potential to make – at last a worthy platform for his extraordinary singing voice. “This time I wasn’t worrying about success at all, and that’s why it was really enjoyable. I didn’t feel I had to go for the big, loud notes all the time – I just sat back and sang how I felt and it all just came flooding out.”

The Awakeningis a warm, live-sounding collection of classic but contemporary folk-soul songs. There are musical similarities with Morrison’s debut, but with added panache and self-belief. There are soaring strings, uplifting harmonies, soulful ballads and, in Slave to the Music, a hand-clapping dance floor groover – a new string to his bow. There are nods to Motown, gospel, country and a hint of Latin. Technically, Morrison remains one of the finest white soul singers, equal parts Stevie Wonder and Paul Young. But he is more than just a Big Voice – he sings from the heart. “To me, pop music is just great music that lasts for years,” he says. “Though there is the other side of pop, which is where you have a hit, but then, after it comes out, it never gets heard again. I never wanted to make that sort of music.”

JAMES MORRISON’s albums are out now in CDs exclusively under MCA Music available at Astroplus and Odyssey Music and Video or online via iTunes and www.MyMusicStore.com.ph
