MCS Concert Review: The Cab on Full Throttle

Posted on 15:03 by Unknown
Title: The Cab on Full Throttle
Written by Niche Dumlao

Pop punk favorites, The Cab, recently drove the Ayala Malls on a musical frenzy as the 5 lads from Las Vegas played to a massive number of their Filipino fans for 3 consecutive days. Social media went haywire as days leading to the shows all ended up on the trending list, as well as massive hype resulted awesomely, much to the delight of the band. In fact, band guitarist, Alex Marshall tweeted “I want to stay in Manila forever”.

Serving their brand of tunes, the boys shuffled tracks from their 2011 album, “Symphony Soldier”, as well as few tracks from 2008’s “Whisper War”. Opening with “Temporary Bliss”, the boys were in their full element as they bounced around the stage, exchanged banters with the crowd and fooled around with each other! Favorites such as “Take my Hand”, “Bad” and “Animal” were given the 3 on 3 punches together with the expected stage shenanigans the band likes to put out. “This has got to be the craziest afternoon of our lives”, declared vocalist Alexander De Leon. And we couldn't help but cheer.

By the time “Angel with a Shotgun” came, utter chaos exploded as the fans went full with their screams. Joey later commented on how the fans reacted with, “I'm proud to say the week we had off we dedicated to performing for some of our best fans...Manila.” But the party didn't stop there as the boys also covered One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” followed by Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”.

Halfway through the show, the band slowed things down with “Endlessly”. Of which, the boys asked a lucky fan to join them onstage.  It was indeed one of the most heartwarming parts of the show. One of the fans asked to go onstage event went on to describe her experience as “the best thing ever.”

The last part of The Cab’s set was composed of “Bounce”, “Her Love is My Religion” and “La La”. Despite being it the last trio of tracks, the energy from the crowd as well as the boys from Vegas didn't falter one bit.  “This tour has been the most amazing, exhausting and mentally-difficult tour”, Joey later commented on his blog.  He also adds, “I can tell we are a totally different band when we have our shows with our fans there singing their hearts away. We have become great at adapting to what the crowd wants... and feeding what the kids demand.”

What do you expect, we’re talking about one of the liveliest acts out there as well as a bunch of the most dedicated Filipino fans. That’s definitely perfect chemistry where in we see no signs of slowing down. Good job, The Cab…good job.

A Smashing Good Time - Smash Project 2012 Concert Review

Posted on 04:49 by Unknown
Title: A Smashing Good Time - Smash Project 2012 Concert Review
Written by Jamie Ortega
Photos by Ed Clinton Go

Party philes, die-hard rakistas, acoustic mavens, pop fans, and love struck teens-they wouldn’t be caught dead together. But you know what they say about music- it has the power to unite even the most diverse people. Last March 8, 2012 music lovers from all walks of life met and had a SMASHING good time at Dayly Entertainment’s Smash Project. The crowd bore witness to a concert of epic proportions as Typecast, Urbandub, Chicosci,  One Buck Short, Slapshock, The Cab, Chris Carraba, Cobra Starship and The Used performed their hearts out, leaving the audience, thrilled, exhilarated, and yes, more than a little infatuated.

Front acts local bands Urbandub, Chicosci, and Slapshock served as the night’s diesel as they warmed up the audience with some of their most popular songs. Typecast, often referred to by fans as the Dashboard Confessional of the Philippines, kicked off the 5-hour show with their famous emo-rock hit Boston Drama.  Not to be outdone was Malaysian group One Buck Short whose lively rendition of Last Friday Night was met with cheers and head-bopping.

They may have called themselves “dorks” during the press conference held the day before at the Edsa Shangri-la Hotel, but they looked nothing like it as the Las Vegas band pop-rock band The Cab composed of front man Alex Marshall, Alex De Leon, Joey Thunder, David Briggs and Frank Sidoris entertained the crowd (and made many a fan girl scream) with songs “Take My Hand,” “Bad,” “I’ll Run,” “Bounce” and “La La”.

The Cab fans will be delighted to know how special the Philippines is to the band- De Leon in particular. “My godfather is Filipino and I learned so much from him; like, a lot about respect and appreciation,” the front man revealed during the press conference. “We’ve had so many fans tweet us over the years trying to get us promoted here, and I look forward to just going out after the shows and meeting them.” Expect a collaboration with Justin Timberlake very soon as De Leon dished out some JT loving also during the press conference. “I specifically look up to him because he kind of does everything. He’s not a one-trick pony,” gushed De Leon.

Everyone here at Manila Concert Scene would like to dole out 1,000 pogi points to the boys of the Cab for two specific things: one for looking for a member of the Manila Concert Scene staff and giving her a hug after the press conference when this writer told them that her co-worker is a big fan. Another kilig-inducing backstage moment was when a 17 year-old Cab fan by the name of Patricia fainted during the second half of the band’s set. When the band heard about the incident De Leon serenaded Patricia and her friends backstage with a snippet of the song “I’ll Run”. Of course one of Patricia’s friends caught the whole thing on tape and uploaded it on Youtube. We are sure Patricia will remember that for the rest of her life!

The mood at Araneta Coliseum shifted from pop rocking to party rocking when Cobra Starship hit the stage. The fan girls, boys (and everyone in between) gyrated, jumped, danced, and sweated to the sytnthpop band’s songs Hot Mess, You Make Me Feel, Guilty Pleasure and The City Is At War. Even if he was absent during the CD signing and show’s meet and greet frontman and creator Gabe Saporta made up for his absence by giving the fans a little, well, fan service. In the middle of his performance Gabe’s pants tore near the crotch area exposing neat pair of blue boxer briefs. Saporta never ran out of jokes and quips during the entire set, proclaiming at one instance that if he was the President of the Philippines he would have everyone’s pants tear every night. Well, if everyone in the country looked like Saporta why not? Right before leaving the stage the goofy and sexy frontman jumped into the crowd doling out kisses to the girls which we are sure, like his pants, made many girls heads explode.

You could really see the change in the crowd when Dashboard Confessional frontman Chris Carraba hit the stage. People from all sections started to stand, cheer, and whoop. Couples began to hold hands while girls had wistful smiles on their faces. Sans the rest of his band Carraba serenaded the crowd with his swoon-worthy voice as he belted out his gut-wrenching and utterly romantic anthems like Belle of the Boulevard, Vindicated, and Stolen.

During the press conference The Used’s Bert McCracken kept on saying “I love you” to the members of the media. The Utah American rock band lead vocalist proved just how much he loved the Filipinos as he, along with his band, Dan Whitesides, Jeph Howard, and Quin Allman delivered a truly head-banging performance that night. Fans formed rock signs with their hands as the band electrified the atmosphere with the tunes The Taste Of Ink, A Box Full Of Sharp Projects and All That I’ve Got. We were also delighted when we saw the Philippine flag in front of the band’s drum set. It really is more fun in the Phbilippines!

What would be a rock concert be like without a mosh pit? Bert made sure that would not be missing as he ably supervised the forming of the pit prompting the group composed mostly of boys (and very brave girls) to chest bump, fist bump, and bump whatever body parts they could- all in the name of rock insanity.

International rock festivals are scarce in this country. As the Smash Project has so ably proven you can be a rakista, a pop fiend, or a party animal but when it all comes down to it- everyone in the Philippines loves and appreciates music. We hope that there will be more festivals like the Smash Project- a lively convergence of hearts and minds from all different walks of life.May music unite our hearts and minds in more ways than one.

Press Release: SMASH PROJECT 2012 Feat. The Used, The Cab, Cobra Starship and Dashboard Confessional Chris Carraba LIVE IN MANILA

Posted on 22:27 by Unknown

Let the summer mayhem begin as DAYLY Entertainment proudly brings: SMASH PROJECT 2012 feat. The Used, The Cab, Cobra Starship and Dashboard Confessional Chris Carraba. Four foreign bands on ONE stage for a night of rock induced energy, amplified further by local rock bands: Chicosci, Urbandub and Typecast.

Expect American rock band The Used to rock the Dome in this year’s first mini music festival. Formed in 2001, they rose to fame in 2002 after releasing their self-titled album. The band has sold 3 million records worldwide.  The title of their second studio album, “In Love and Death” was in reference to frontman Bert McCracken’s personal tragedy during the recording of the album. “In Love and Death” received favorable reviews with three singles “Take It Away”, “All That I’ve Got” and “I Caught Fire”, gaining commercial recognition.

The Used’s rock music can be further described as Gross Pop - which was how Bert McCracken put it, saying,“In the past, we've always kind of brought pop sensibility into heavy rock, but this is going to be all that much more tantalizing and brutal. Our songs are 10 times messier and noisier than they've ever been.  Quinn Allman said Gross Pop "[It's] gonna be pretty raw. I think a lot of the stuff is very much more poetic and lyrical, and the sound is more retro and raw with less production.”  Members:  Bert McCracken (vocals, piano, keyboards), Jeph Howard (bass), Quinn Allman (guitar), Dan Whitesides (drums)
The Used will be joined by Cobra Starship, an American synthpop band created by lead vocalist Gabe Saporta in 2003. Cobra Starship is known for their songs “Good Girls Go Bad” feat. Gossip Girl Leighton Meester and "You Make Me Feel…” from their “Night Shades” album.
Members:  Gabe Saporta (vocals), Ryland Backington (guitars), Alex Suarez (bass), Nate Navarro (drums), Victoria Asher (keytarist).

Also joining the melee is American rock band The Cab. The band was proclaimed by Alternative Press magazine as one of the “100 Bands You Need to Know in 2010”.  Their self-released album Symphony Soldier was hailed by critics as a “masterpiece” while its single entitled “Bad” received positive reviews from critics and listeners as well. The band, though relatively new, already has a solid base and is continuously gaining worldwide recognition with their fresh approach to rock music.
Band Members: Alexander De Leon (vocals), Alex Marshall (piano, guitar, backing vocals), Joey Thunder (bass)

Dashboard Confessional is also an American rock band who will be joining this summer’s rockfest on an acoustic set up. Led by singer-songwriter Chris Carraba, the band is known for their hit songs “Vindicated” (featured in the Spiderman 2 soundtrack),  “Stolen” and “Belle of the Boulevard”. Their last album, “Alter the Ending”, showed maturity in terms of musicality and content.  Fans of the band since 2000 has been following the music that Chris Carraba has exquisitely given life. Known for his unplugged performance, frontman Chris will be gracing the stage this March to end this rocking lineup.

End the first quarter of 2012 with a bang, and witness a rock fusion like never before. SMASH Project 2012 live in Manila on March 8, 2012 at the SMART Araneta Coliseum. Tickets  available on sale on the 24th of December, 2011. Ticket prices:  Patron Standing: Php 4,500, Lower Box: Php 3,500, Upper A: Php 2,500, Upper B: Php 1,000 and Gen Ad: Php 500. This event is brought to you by DAYLY Entertainment.
