Catch The Script Live in Manila on March 31, 2013 at Smart Araneta Coliseum

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown

A special evening is in store for Filipinos as the Irish band The Script performs in Manila on March 31,2012 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

In a follow-up to the Irish trio's highly praised sophomore album, Science and Faith, the bands latest album #3. The album’s much anticipated first single “Hall of Fame” made its premiere during the Today Show’s Olympic broadcast, to rave reviews. Featuring will.i.am, Black Eyed Peas member and Danny’s co host on The Voice UK, the inspirational anthem shines both lyrically and musically. The song’s official video has already gained nearly 23 million views on Youtube.

#3, The Script’s third album in just 4 years, may be the bands most “personal” album yet - with emotionally charged songs like “6 Degrees of Separation,” a lyrical recount of Danny’s traumatic split from a girlfriend, and “If You Could See Me Now” a tear jerking tribute to both Danny’s late father, and Mark’s parents.

No strangers to success, the band’s first album, self titled: Timothy Powell of the BBC referred to The Script, as “fresh, vital and ferociously good." Featuring the hit singles “The Man Who Can't Be Moved” and "Breakeven" the album spent eight weeks in the top ten, was the twelfth best selling album in the UK in 2008, and the 198th best-selling album in 2010 in the USA.

The Script’s second album, Science and Faith, debuted at #1 in the UK selling 70,816 copies in its first week, and at number three on the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 49,000 copies. The album has sold 314,000 copies in the US, and over 1.5 million worldwide. "For the First Time" became the bands first #1 single with well over 1 million downloads.

To date they've sold more than four million albums, nine million singles, and have performed as both the hand-picked opener for U2 and Paul McCartney, and headliners playing their official biggest crowd ever in July of 2011 - a sold-out crowd of 50,000 people in their hometown of Dublin.

Make sure to catch The Script as they perform all their hits live to their Filipino fans once again on March 31,2013 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Tickets may be purchased from any Ticketnet outlets or at online at www.ticketnet.com.ph , starting Nov 15th2012. For inquiries please call 911-5555.

MCS EXCLUSIVE: Mall Of Asia Arena: Changing The Game, Elevating Entertainment

Posted on 23:29 by Unknown
Mall Of Asia Arena: Changing The Game, Elevating Entertainment
Written by Jamie Ortega

How does one define world-class?
According to freedictionary.com world class is defined as “ranking among the foremost in the world, of an international standard of excellence.” In that regard the Mall Of Asia Arena is definitely a world-class sports and entertainment venue. With its’state of the art facilities, a 20,000 seating capacity, superb amenities like a meet and greet room, a promoters lounge, fully equipped dugouts and luxurious corporate suites it has definitely lived up to its’ description of being a premiere sports and entertainment venue.

Since its’ grand opening last May 21, 2012 many sports and entertainment aficionados have seen and experienced for themselves the exciting and comfy feel of being inside this architectural icon owned by the SM Investment Corporation and managed by West Avenue Theatres Corporation. Learn more about this truly impressive venue in this exclusive interview with SM Mall Of Asia Arena Business Unit Head Arnel Gonzales.

Tell us some of the projects the Mall Of Asia Arena has been busy with:
Well, in terms of our calendar we have been full, there has always been a happening per month. It started with our opening, the Lady Gaga concert last May, and there was our grand launch last June which featured the icons of the Philippine concert industry, and of course the back to back concert of New Kids On The Block and Backstreet Boys. We also had an opening of the UAAP a month after that.

We have had the visit of the NBA stars as well, the basketball challenge which featured professional players of the NBA in a friendly exhibition match. For August, our highlight show was the two week-long Cirque Du Soleil, September was the first Ateneo-Lasalle game, and the cheer dance competition where we reached our first 19,000 seating capacity mark, a total of 19,508 patrons for that competition.

October has been the busiest month of the year, and it’s nice to see the Arena has had more than its’ fair share of shows starting with Keane, and then we had the first-ever indoor dance party for David Guetta. A few days after that we had the first finals game for UAAP wherein we reached the 20,000 mark for the arena. So for us it’s been quite busy, the Jonas Brothers is one of our key shows and for November the highlight is Jennifer Lopez and the silver anniversary concert of Regine Velasquez.

What is the market of your arena?
That is a good question, we’ve experienced families for our Cirque shows, we’ve had PBA games here, the UAAP has been at home with us, and based from the feedback they gave from the players and the organizers they like that we have a bigger lower box section. We’ve had Zac Efron, we’ve had the institutional show of Bench, so we’ve had our share from the young ones to the not so young ones with Wilson Phillips, Taylor Dayne, so I guess we've been blessed that the Arena   has had various shows for all ages.

Would you say that the Mall Of Asia Arena is better than the other arenas? Why or why not?

Well, we wouldn’t say we are better-yet. We will leave it to the patrons, we will leave it to the promoters, we will leave it to the organizers. What we offer is practically the new venue, the newest venue in town. It boasts of a turnstile system, an optical turnstile system wherein we can guarantee a single entry system for our promoters, and then one of its’ unique features, the first in Southeast Asia is its’ corp seat level, and then also inside our venue is a state of the art LED ribbon system, as well as the LED pro tables.

In terms of basketball amenities we are currently using Robins flooring and Spalding basketball goals, and we are also following the FIBA regulation lines so technically we are equipped for international sporting events. Outside of that we have a fully mechanized patron section at the ground floor wherein it gives our promoters the opportunity to be creative in terms of how they can use the floor as a stage set-up.

So, if you notice that the stages are different per show, it is due to the production directive. We have a more elongated design than round, and it gives enough leverage to have more seats, if the promoters want a stage that is wide they can have that or we can adjust it to a snug set-up wherein its’ really intimate. Plus another key feature that we have is that our general admission section has actual seats.

What are some of your most attended events?
Well, yung concerts as a whole, depende. When you say seating capacities it depends on the structure, it depends on how the stage is laid out, or what are the sections that can be open based on the stage design. So iba’t iba talaga ang mga considerations, but in terms of capacity I believe we are at par with other venues but the key feature is that we have a bigger lower box section and a bigger patron section, so when it comes to the premium priced ticket, we have more.

Was the design of Mall Of Asia Arena based on any other venue?
As far as design is concerned what we mirrored is the one of Philips Arena in Atlanta Georgia.  The seating design is based on that so yung distance, yung viewing angles are considered. In terms of the land footprint that we have available for the venue, it is very similar to Philips. The land footprint that we have is similar to the land footprint of Philips. Arquitectonica, a US-based firm designed the Arena, they also designed Mall Of Asia.

What can people look forward to in the coming months?

Well we are in the finalization stage of the NBA Café, the first of its’ kind in Asia. We will be having more popular in- house brands like Krispy Kreme and of course now we have Starbucks both inside and outside the venue. We will have more palatable reasons for our patrons to come dine before the show and after the show. One of our features is, of course we respect our patrons who are smokers, so we have well-appointed 15 smoking lounges almost 2 to 4 per floor. Our smoking lounges are managed by the group Cravings where our patrons can enjoy a cup of tea or cold drinks and it is all in-house.

Concert Review: Saved Festival 2012

Posted on 23:05 by Unknown
Saved Festival 2012
Written by Bianchi Mendoza
Photos by Psalm Malabuen

The SM Mall of Asia Arena was abuzz with anticipation and swelling with positivity as the second-ever Saved Festival took place there last Friday, October 26. Feel-good music with a message filled the 20,000 seating capacity arena. Concert-goers enjoyed Christian Music, which unbeknownst to some, has many genres.

From rock, pop, rnb or even, rap, Christian Music offers something for every type of audiophile. The beats and melodies may vary but the message remains the same, a unified harmony and a desire to share their beliefs with the world. The atmosphere within the arena was solemn, celebratory and at times, reflective. The spiritual lyrics were as powerful as the message they longed to share. Manila-based band Gloryfall kicked things off. This 7-member band also conducts seminars on worhip-leading and music mentorship throughout the Philippines. They were followed by Cebu-based band Paglaum who played their original Visayan Christian Music. Paglaum has toured all over Cebu with their concert, Awit sa Kasingkasing (Song for the Heart).

Abandon, an alternative rock band from San Antonio, Texas, took the stage after a brief intermission which was punctuated by the occasional shriek of excitement. Abandon premiered their single, “Let Go” (which many may remember from last year’s Saved Festival Intro Video).

The Katinas, who last visited the Philippines in 2008, came next. Made up of five biological brothers:  John, Jesse, James, Joe and Sam, The Katinas have played almost everywhere, from their home country American Samoa to different churches and countries all over the globe. They recently released their first album in three years entitled Collage. They stopped mid-set to pay tribute to the women in their lives and in the audience by singing Bruno Mars’ hit “Just The Way You Are” while delighting the audience with family photos. Desperation Band also known as DBand, ended the concert with their well-known worship songs like “Rescue” and “I Am Free”.

Midway through the concert, Pastor Joey Bonifacio took the stage for a few minutes. He shared insights from the Bible and from his newly published book entitled, The Lego Principle. The book illustrates loving God and loving others by using Lego bricks. Pastor Joey shares how we can make a difference by connecting and embracing our purpose in the grand scheme of things regardless of how small or insignificant we may feel at times. Each of us is valued, each of us has the power to shape and change the world.

Last year’s Saved Festival focused on themes of living a life without any compromise—living an authentic Christian Life. This year’s festival focused more on learning to guard against false teachings and to hold on the truth. Saved Festival 2012 was a triumph for the organizers (Becca Music Inc, etc.) performers and audience. It served as a reminder that there is hope for the Philippines and that there is always reason to be thankful—reason to celebrate.

Concert Review: The Jonas Brothers heat up Manila!

The Jonas Brothers heat up Manila!

Fan girls and boys of all shapes and sizes reigned supreme at the Mall Of Asia last October 19, 2012 as Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas, collectively known as the pop rock band Jonas Brothers, performed to thousands of ardent supporters in their first-ever Philippine concert. Some bands have a hard time staging a comeback after taking on solo separate careers, but not the JoBros, as they are fondly called. Looking more mature and a whole lot sexier, the boys set the arena stage on fire with songs from their four studio albums It’s About Time, Jonas Brothers, A Little Bit Longer, and Lines, Vines And Trying Times.

To those unfamiliar with the boys here is a little biography to keep you all up to speed: formed in 2005, the Jonas Brothers gained popularity via the Disney show Miley Cyrus starring Hannah Montan,   followed by their own program also on the Disney network Jonas Brothers: Living The Dream.  They continued their acting career with the Disney Channel original movie Camp Rock and its’ sequel  Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.

One of their Camp Rock co-stars Filipino –American singer and actress Anna Maria Perez De Tagle served as the night’s front act. Wearing a black figure-hugging glittery top and pants designed by Filipino designer Oliver Tolentino, Anna Marie made her kababayan’s hearts swell with pride with her show-stopping performance of Rihanna’s Only Girl In The World and The One That Got Away. Anna Maria also showed OPM some love by performing a fun medley of local tunes Please Be Careful With My Heart, Torete, and Hinahanap-Hanap Kita. She impressed her fans even further by speaking to the audience in Tagalog before waving goodbye and leaving the stage.

No one can deny the popularity of Jonas Brothers in the country –people in JoBros shirts  carrying JoBro banners while milling around the Arena several hours before the concert are just a few examples of what these fans would do for their idols. And just like a pot that was slowly simmering throughout the day, the excitement that was filling their hearts finally boiled over as they began to chant “Jonas, Jonas, Jonas,” as soon as the front act was over while simultaneously running to the front of the stage.

The cheers and pleas from the crowd did not go to waste because after several minutes the boys finally appeared on stage, simultaneously kicking off the show with one of their biggest hits, When You Look Me In The Eyes. The crowd immediately began to sing along to the first song, waving their glow sticks in the air as some girls wiped tears off their eyes, filled with disbelief that after six years they were finally seeing their idols in the flesh.
The band’s opening salvo was followed by Much Better, Goodnight And Goodbye and That’s The Way We Roll as lead vocalist Joe Jonas, clad in a black top with white stripes bounced around onstage while Kevin, the eldest Jonas, wearing a brown jacket and white collared top, took care of the guitars. Nick, the youngest Jonas, clad in a black polo and black jacket showed the most range that night by doing vocals, playing the keyboards and drums.

The energy that emanated from the crowd during the first leg of the concert did not let up as the audience, composed mostly of hard-core Jonas fans, sang along to the 28 song repertoire. The setlist was also peppered with fun covers like Rihanna’s We Found Love which was mashed up with an original Fly With Me. Another well-received mash-up was Hello Beautiful and We Are Young. Nick, who started a solo career in 2009 with the formation of his own band, Nick Jonas & The Administration had his own time in the limelight as he sang the hit song Who I Am from his solo album bearing the same name.

Grateful and appreciative of the strong response that they were receiving, the boys took the time, in between numbers, to show their fans just how happy they were.  “I can’t believe it’s taken us this long to come here,” shared Nick Jonas. “It’s our first time here in Manila and you guys are showing us so much love.” “It really is more fun in the Philippines,” he added, a comment which drove the crowd wild.  Nick also mentioned that the band will be making Manila a priority as they go on tour once more next year.

From fans to songs to tears and cheers, the concert had all the ingredients of a perfect show –with just a little bit of controversy in the form of the song Wedding Bells.Believed by many to be written by Nick for his ex-girlfriend Miley Cyrus, Nick all but admitted that it was indeed written for her by uttering these words before introducing the song.  “This is a song I feel uncomfortable about,” But as an artist, you have to write about things that you felt while in the moment, if you recall our anniversary falls 11 nights into June,”  he revealed alluding to the day he and Miley became a couple.

The 28 strong set ended with the hit song SOS as the boys took their final bows. As cheers filled the arena, the band took to the stage once more to play the night’s encore, one of their biggest hits to date, Burning Up- two words which coincidentally would be the perfect way to describe the night-a fun culmination of the fans’ passion, and the band’s fiery talent, all meshed into one undeniably amazing show.

Concert Review: Wilson Phillips enthralls Manila with their sentimental pop hits

Wilson Phillips enthralls Manila with their sentimental pop hits
Written by Jamie Ortega

One of the brightest memories from my childhood was of a music video with a group of girls singing their hearts out atop a mountain. They were pretty, stylish, and they had amazing voices. Their song Hold Ongave me hope. As I was going through the usual growing pains of failing grades, class bullies and unreasonably strict parents, that song encouraged me to look toward better days. Thus began my admiration for Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson and Chynna Philips, collectively known as Wilson Philips. I fell in love with their other hit songs as well like Youre In Love, Impulsive, and Release Me.I had cassette tapes and even vinyl records of their self-titled debut album and their second album, Shadows And Light.

With that being said, I was really excited when I found out that they were coming to Manila for a one night show at the Mall Of Asia Arena. I simply had to hear the songs of my youth, and thanks to the kind people at Random Minds productions, I did! Before the pop trio performed last Friday, October 12, 2012 two very interesting front acts put the audience  in a very good mood (despite the horrible traffic outside)- retail princess turned jazz singer  Bea Tantoco and YouTube sensation Zandy Rose Tenerefe. I was really impressed by Zandy who delivered stirring, goose bump-inducing renditions of Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Heartand Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You.

After two entertaining front acts, the pop trio finally appeared on stage, inciting excited cheers and screams from their Pinoy fans that waited for more than 10 years to see their pop idols perform live! What followed after that was an hour and a half of nostalgic tunes from the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90 starting with It’s Only Life, the leading track from the trio’s second album. After that was Dedicated To The One I Love from their latest album Dedicated, an album inspired by the girl’s parents. To those unfamiliar with the Wilson Philips’ truly inspiring showbiz lineage, Carnie and Wendy Wilson are daughters of Beach Boys legendary writer and producer Brian Wilson and Chyna Philips is the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the band Mamas And Papas.

Aside from their charming vocal harmonies and inspiring song lyrics, I also marveled at how comfortable the ladies were on stage. They made their audience feel like they were in the living room with them, chatting with their best friends. Carnie, Wendy and Chynna cracked jokes with one another and made the audience chuckle with their impersonations of Cher, Taylor Dayne, and Cyndi Lauper.

In many ways the concert felt like it was also the trios’ way of thanking the people who’ve helped them along the way, from their parents to their musical influences like Elton John and Abba. Unlike other groups who perform covers and copy everything from the song’s notes and riffs, Wilson Phillips truly made their rendition of Elton John’s Daniel their own with their unique harmony-rich sound and captivating melodies.
The highlight of most concerts is when the performers sing their biggest hits, and this show was no different. The screams and cheers in the arena reached an all-time high when the girls began to sing the opening lines of their mega-hit You’re In Love. I could almost picture the ex-girlfriends or the ex-boyfriends in the minds of the audience as they sang the song with all the strength they could muster.

Ever been obsessed with a song but completely clueless with the history and meaning behind the song? Chynna Philips put all questions regarding the meaning of her parents hit tune California Dreaming to rest as she explained how the song came about. According to Chynna it was 1963 and her song mother was newly married to John Philips. They were living in New York City, which was having particularly cold winter, at least by Michelle's standards as she was from sunny California. John would walk around the apartment at night working out tunes, and one morning brought the first verse of the song to Michelle. It was a song about longing to be in another place, and it was inspired by Michelle's homesickness. Michelle enjoyed visiting churches, and a few days before, she and John visited St. Patrick's Cathedral, which inspired the second verse.

California Dreamswas followed by You Wont See Me Cry,their hit single from their Shadows And Light album and another cover, the band’s rendition of Beach Boys’ Wouldn’t It Be Nice with Wendy singing the lead vocals this time around. Even if I wasn’t born in the ‘60s and ‘70s I enjoyed listening to these songs because of their timeless flavor and sweet melodies that effortlessly brought me back in time.  What followed after that was a real treat for Wilson Phillips fans, for the first time after 20 years they sang Don’t Take Me Down, also from their Shadows And Light album. This was followed by another cover, their version of the emotionally-charged Go Your Own Way, a Fleetwood Mac classic.

Veering away from the series of ballads in the show’s playlist was the 11th song that night, a  delightful  Abba medley of Dancing Queen and Does Your Mother Know that brought the audience to their feet! Having Chynna say, “If there are any dancers in the audience stand up,” helped of course although it really didn’t take a lot of time to make us party loving Filipinos shake our booty’s like there was no tomorrow! Is there any prom in the world that didn’t play Dancing Queen? I didn’t think so!

The energy rose even further when the first notes of Impulsive came on, the third single from their debut album. As the girls were making so many people’s dreams come true on stage, I realized why  I loved these girls so much, their songs weren’t just songs they were girl-power anthems! They didn’t dwell on the sad things that were happening in their life, they loved, they lost, and they moved on. And in many ways and through many songs they taught me to do that as well.

It really seemed as if the girls saved the best for last, judging by the last leg of the concert made up of another mega-hit Release Me and the Beach Boys Kokomowhich according to them was a really apt song for them to sing because they were in a tropical a country.

Songs, just like people, have their own lifespan. They can be heard nearly every hour on the radio at the peak of their career till they die a slow death only to be played once a week at best. When Wilson Philips released their debut album Wilson Philips in 1990 it hit no 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart on June 9, 1990, bumping Madonna’s Vogue off the top spot. The song was given a “second wind” or so to speak when it climbed to the charts after the song and the girls were included in Oscar-nominated comedy Bridesmaids. At the press conference the day before the concert Chynna revealed how their cameo came about. “Since we haven’t appeared on any film since we were kids, we immediately said yes.”  Having a song as iconic as that for the night’s finale couldn’t have been a better choice. As the encore tunes In My Room and Hold On came on it really felt like a fantastic ending to a night filled with love, dreams coming true, nostalgia, and good ole fan girling!
