Concert Review: Sting enthralls Manila in sold-out show at The Big Dome

Concert Review: Sting enthralls Manila in sold-out show at The Big Dome
Written by Jamie Ortega

The “Englishman In New York” invaded Manila last December 9, 2012, performing some of his greatest hits to an enthusiastic crowd of all ages at the Smart-Arena Coliseum.

Clad in a sheer gray long-sleeved top, black vest, pants and boots, Gordon Matthew Thomas Summer, more popularly known as Sting, kicked off the three hour show with three of his most popular hits, If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, Every Little Thing She does Is Magic, and Englishman In New York. With an opening salvo like that it didn’t take much to drive the audience to their feet, and that’s exactly what happened, with matching cheers, applause, and sing-along action, as the Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter, together with his band, guitarist Dominic Miller, drummer Vinnie Calauita, violinist Peter Tickell, Jo Lawry on backing vocals and keyboardist David Sancious, followed their opening salvo with songs Seven Days, Demolition Man (from Sting’s former band The Police), I Hung My Head and The End Of The Game. Sting also played songs from his former band Police, like Driven To Tears and Message In A Bottle. Despite the romantic nature of nearly all of Sting’s songs, it was the slower, more sentimental tunes like Fragile and Fields Of Gold that really put the audience in a soulful mood as they waved their glow sticks in the dark.

When a concert promoter casually asked me how Sting was able to pack a huge venue like The Big Dome, I provided this simple answer. “It’s the timeless and uplifting quality of his music.”  Indeed, songs like Fields Of Gold, and King Of Pain are the kind of tunes that one can play on any given day, 10 to 20 years from the height of their popularity, and still sound fresh. The universal appeal of Sting’s songs was more evident during the concert as the crowd, composed of teenagers, yuppies, married couples, and showbiz personalities, all showed their approval and enjoyment of Sting’s music. It didn’t even take an astounding set design to grab their attention, a minimal set design, a black cloth as backdrop along with several well-placed stage lights was more than enough to put everyone in the mood. End of the Game, the fourth song of the night, was followed by crowd favorite Fields Of Gold, and more songs from his former band, Police, like Driven To Tears and Message In A Bottle.

If there was one thing I also noticed, apart from his amazing talent, it’s how much of a generous performer Sting is. Unlike other vocalists and bassists who simply name the members of their band in one portion of the show, Sting gave each member their time to shine. Back-up vocalist Lawry displayed her vocal prowess during the 12th song The Hounds Of Winter, Miller impressed the crowd with his guitar skills in Shape Of My Heart, Tickell played the violin and even head-banged at one point, etc. Another display of Sting’s generosity was his three encore finale, which doesnt happen a lot in concerts. A tip for those who have a hard time figuring out if the show will have an encore or not? If the house lights arent on yet, there most likely will be an encore.

The legendary singer-songwriter (at 61 how does he get his energy?)’s first encore consisted of Desert Rose,  The Police’s King Of Pain, and another Police song, Every Breath You Take. The second encore was Next To You, and the third encore was Fragile, which Sting dedicated to the victims of typhoon Pablo. With lyrics that talk about death, violence and war, it provided an unexpected poignant moment in a night filled sentimentality, love, revelry, and loads of captivating music. It was really the perfect way for legendary promoters Ovation Productions to end a successful and fulfilling 2012: by putting a legendary musician like Sting onstage to enthrall us all. Congratulations to everyone involved!

Taylor Swift earns first-ever Golden Globe Nomination, Returns to #1 on Billboard's Top 200 albums sales chart

Posted on 00:29 by Unknown

Nashville, TN – December 13, 2012 – Taylor Swift was enjoying a rare day off today when she got the news that “Safe & Sound,” her song with The Civil Wars and T Bone Burnett for “The Hunger Games” movie, had earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song.

“What an amazing and unexpected present!” said Taylor, who today is celebrating her 23rd birthday. “I’m blown away by my first-ever Golden Globe nomination, and so honored to be nominated with T Bone Burnett and The Civil Wars. Writing music for ‘The Hunger Games’ was a labor of love – I was a fan of the stories and the characters, and we all wanted the music to have an authenticity that matched the tone of the movie and the emotions expressed in the book. This is a huge honor, and I’m really excited and so flattered. THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association!”
The 70th Annual Golden Globes will be awarded on January 13, 2013 and will air live on NBC.

This week Taylor’s 3X-Platinum album RED is the biggest-selling album in the U.S., claiming the #1 position atop Billboard’s all-genre Top 200 Albums chart for the 4th time since its release, posting a one-week sales jump of 22%. Combined, Taylor’s three #1 albums have now spent 21 weeks at the top of Billboard’s album sales charts, tying her with Whitney Houston and Jay Z for the 4th most weeks at #1 since SoundScan began keeping track in 1991. RED debuted in October with U.S. sales in excess of 1.2 million albums (music’s highest weekly sales number in more than a decade), and has spent each of the 7 weeks since at #1 or #2 on the all-genre Top 200 Albums chart, and held firm at #1 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart. In addition to its U.S. Triple-Platinum certification, RED  (released on Big Machine Records) has reached #1 at iTunes in 42 countries, and total sales of RED outside of the U.S. have now topped 1.1 million albums. It was just announced last week that RED’s lead single, the international chart-topper “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” has been nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Record of the Year.
RED’s global sales success has been matched by its critical acclaim, with the disc being lauded on numerous year-end “Best Albums of the Year” lists by outlets including Rolling Stone, Spin, MTV and the Associated Press.

Today (Thursday, December 13th), MTV will world premiere Taylor’s 23rd music video, the highly anticipated clip for “I Knew You Were Trouble.” at 4:40 p.m. ET. The video will then go into rotation across all MTV channels at 5 p.m.

“I Knew You Were Trouble.” the third single from RED, is currently climbing both the CHR/Top 40 and Hot A/C radio charts, and is #2 (all-genres) at iTunes.

"As soon as I started writing this song, I knew it was different from anything else on the record, so I knew that I wanted the video to be different from anything we'd ever done,” said Taylor. “I wanted to tell the story of a girl who falls into a world that's too fast for her, and suffers the consequences.”
Shot over two days in and around Los Angeles, in the video Taylor plays the character of a girl being completely drawn in by her attraction to a guy (portrayed by Reeve Carney, currently playing Peter Parker in the Broadway production of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) with a beautiful smile and big personality. But he has a dark side, and Taylor's character loses herself with the guy and in the relationship, becoming part of his dark world. She eventually sees that she's lost herself and has learned her lesson. "I feel incredibly lucky to have gotten to work with Anthony Mandler and to have Reeve Carney as my co-star in the video, and I can't wait for everybody to see it,” Taylor added.

Taylor is currently in Europe for a live performance this weekend on top German entertainment show “Schlag den Raab.” Later this month, she will perform live in Times Square, ringing in 2013 as the headliner of ABC’s “Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest.”

The 6 best things about the JLO Concert

Posted on 00:20 by Unknown
The 6 best things about the JLO Concert
Written by Jamie Ortega

People may call her by many names- Jennifer Lopez, Jenny From The Block, JLO-but no matter what they may use when it comes to her talent, her beauty and her inimitable style her fans and supporters all say the same thing- Jennifer Lopez is an ICON and an INTERNATIONAL SUPERSTAR.
On that note, the Philippines was very lucky to see the Latina sensation perform live at her two-hour jampacked concert last November 26, 2012 held at the Mall Of Asia Arena. The former American Idol judge wove her musical magic from start to finish: from the amazing set list (full of JLO’s popular hits) to the shiny, glittery and oh-so-sexy onstage outfits, to the show –stopping, hard-hitting, body-bumping dance moves, to the awe-inspiring set design it was an absolutely phenomenal show. To separately sum up how we felt here’s a rundown of what made JLO Live In Manila so great:

1) The repertoire- Have you been to a concert where you sometimes feel like youre waiting for the artist’s two hits as they sing unknown songs from their nth album? Well, this show didn’t have that as JLO sang all her hits starting with Get Right from her fourth studio album Rebirth to Love Don’t Cost A Thing from her second studio album, JLO. Fans of the old-school JLO swag weren’t disappointed either as she sang I’m Real, Aint It Funny and Jenny From The Block.  Fans of JLO’s more recent indak-inducing tunes like On The Floor got a dose of that towards the end of the show capped by a sizzling dance duet finale between JLO and dancer-choreographer beau Casper Smart. The acoustic set in the middle of the concert where JLO was given a chance to showcase her softer side with tunes like Until It Beats No More and the nostalgia-inducing If You Had My Love were well-spaced as well.

2) The outfits! Apart from being one of the world’s top performers, JLO is also an established fashion icon, and the outfits that the triple threat wore, all designed by Lebansese designer Zuhair Murad were simply BREATHTAKING!!!!!!!!!!! It began with the dazzling gold strapless cut in several parts with matching strappy sandals followed by a silver top-and-sweatpants, a sexily-cut red gown, a flow Grecian-inspired blue dress: all the shine, glitter and sheer everywhere spelled glamour

3) The Love she has for the Philippines -Tired of the usual “Mahal Kita Manila?” sentiments from foreign performers? We feel ‘ya. JLO veered away from that by grabbing a Philippine flag from the audience, and wearing it like a cape! She also took a camera onstage, snapped a photo with it and returned it to the audience. Another touching moment was when she brought a fan(who turned out to be Sharon Cuneta and Sarah Geronimo’s road manager) onstage and sang to her. She did say “Mahal kita,” but the accompanying acts were more than enough to show that she really meant it.

4) The sexy bodies!!! JLO is known for her beautiful assets which were well-displayed at the show. Aside from her gorgeous behind, the crowd openly admired JLO’s rock hard abs and smooth skin. (Note to men: real women have curves! Gone are the days when stick-thin is in!!) The girls in the audience had their fair share of eye candy as well as JLO’s male dancers took their tops off after the playful tune “Papi” displaying lean and mean torsos. Yummy!

5) The production design- the show’s several themes, Old Hollywood glamor, a boxing arena, a sexy 50s cabaret, were completely breathtaking. Each segment included laser lights, fireworks, and shiny confetti.

6) The VIP’s and celebrities in the audience - A red carpet was set up at the Mall Of Asia arena where photographers took snap shots of the steady of stars and politicians making their way to the venue. SPOTTED: Kim Chiu, Maja Salvador, Boy Abunda, Richard Gomez, Senator Bong Revilla, Lani Mercado, Jessy Mendiola, Sarah Lahbati, Anne Curtis, Divine Lee, Daniel Matsunaga, and many more!

MCS Exclusive: Kyle Patrick on going solo, his fans, and his favorite Filipino memories

Posted on 05:23 by Unknown

MCS Exclusive: Kyle Patrick on going solo, his fans, and his favorite Filipino memories
Written by: Jamie Ortega
Kyle Patrick is a force to be reckoned with. In person, the tall, lanky and undeniably handsome musician could easily be mistaken for an Ambercrombie and Fitch or Calvin Klein model. But when Kyle hits the stage- it’s a different story altogether. Infused with energy, passion, and a gifted voice that never fails to touch the heart of his fans, the front man of the power pop group The Click Five has been an integral part of the Boston-based bands’s widespread and international success, with achievements like a well-received Sophomore album Modern Minds And Pastimes, a number one single (Jenny), and a highly-successful 2008 world tour to their name.

Following the band’s stunning announcement last December 2011 that they will be on hiatus, (although Kyle has repeatedly stated in media interviews that he has not permanently left the band),  Kyle has since embarked on a solo career to showcase his own brand of music. Last November 29, 2012 the talented musician flew to Manila to perform at the opening of the new and improved Glorietta  where invited media guests, VIP’s celebrities and lucky shoppers got a taste of choice cuts from Patrick’s second EP, Kyle Patrick. In line with this, Manila Concert Scene was given the great opportunity to sit down with Kyle and talk about all the amazing things happening to him.

You are back in Manila! When was the last time you were here?
KP: I was here last month I played in Dumagete and Davao, I haven't played in Manila for a while so I am very excited

What are some of your fondest memories of the Philippines?
KP: Eating balut, first time I was here, and also the very first time I played with The Click Five. It was very early on in the band for me, it was our first show in Asia, we came all the way here, we didn’t know what to expect, we thought we were going to play at a little showcase or something and we show up at Trinoma and it was like crazy pandemonium, we were blown away, and I think that was the thing like, “whoa, Asia’s crazy,” and just like Manila in crazy was just wild. And we kept coming back here since then and now I am here for my first solo concert and it is very exciting.

How would you describe your new record?
KP: Well, I would describe it as collaborative and upbeat, anthemic and pop. I made it alone and I mean when I made it alone I made it without a record label so I did it all independently but that doesn’t mean I did it by myself, I worked with tons and tons of people especially the fans. I worked on this website called Pledge Music and it was basically this platform where people could just pre-order my album and other pieces of my merchandise like hand-written lyrics from my album.

What made you decide to work with Pledge Music and to get your fans involved in the creative process?
KP: Oh, I don’t know, I think just in general I try to do things in just a new way with this new project and I just wanted to do it more collaborative like what I was saying, in the past it just felt like a lot more closed off and being creative is hard, especially as a songwriter it’s hard to show people things that arent finished yet. It is difficult for me to just kind of get out of my comfort zone and to show people things and to get feedback very early on in the process so basically I would post these rock versions of songs for people to hear and they were nowhere near finished, I would sit along on recorders like these melodies and not what and post them for people to hear.

And there is videos of me in pajamas in the studio just recording creative ideas and I got a lot of feedback from that. I got a feel of what people liked more than others and that helped me decide on what songs to record on the album it helped me on what kind of styles to do in certain sections of songs so it was just really collaborative and I loved how it happened and it was basically me and the band and all my friends that worked together, it was amazing.

How was it like performing with Gym Class Heroes and Panic At The Disco?
KP: Those are a lot of fun, the Panic At The Disco show that was actually the MTV Asia Awards in 2008 so they were just one of many great artists. We were hanging out with The Script before they had done anything, they were awesome, so good, and we were like we knew your record is going to blow up, and probably like 6 months later they had the Man Who Cant Be Moved and they became big

Do you want to come back to Manila?
KP: Of course, yeah, I look at this stop as more of a teaser and I will come back for another concert hopefully middle to late next year 2013, I will come back for a full concert and I will probably put out a few more songs if not another EP before then. I have this other crazy music video idea I am churning out right now so we are thinking about a lot of stuff and will probably put it out in the next six months or so and I  will come back.
